In recent years, the user demands have increased for multimedia service of high quality over the broadband convergence network. These rising demands for high quality multimedia service led the popularization of various user terminals and large scale display equipments, which needs a variety type of QoS (Quality of Service). In order to support demands for QoS, numerous research projects are in progress both from the perspective of network as well as end system; For example, at the network perspective, QoS guaranteeing by improving of internet performance such as Active Queue Management, while at the end system perspective, SVC (Scalable Video Coding) encoding scheme to guarantee media quality. However, existing AQM algorithms have problems which do not guarantee QoS, because they did not consider the essential characteristics of video encoding schemes. In this paper, it is proposed to solve this problem by deploying the TS- AQM (Temporal Scalability Active Queue Management) which employs the differentiated packet dropping for dependency of the temporal level among the frames, based on SVC encoding characteristics by exploiting the TID (Temporal ID) field of the SVC NAL unit header. The proposed TS-AQM guarantees multimedia service quality through video decoding reliability for SVC streaming service, by differentiated packet dropping when congestion exists.
SVC (Scalable Video Coding) is a new video coding standard to provide convergence media service in heterogeneous environments with different networks and diverse terminals through spatial-temporal-quality combined flexible scalabilities. This paper presents the performance analysis on packet loss in the delivery of SVC over IP networks and an efficient adaptation method to packet loss caused by buffer overflow. In particular, SVC with MGS (Medium Grained Scalability) as well as spatial and temporal scalabilities is addressed in the consideration of packet-based adaptation since finer adaptation is possible with a sufficient numbers of quality layers in MGS. The effect on spatio-temporal quality due to the packet loss of SVC with MGS is evaluated. In order to minimize quality degradation resulted by packet loss, the proposed adaptation of MGS based SVC first sets adaptation unit of AU (Access Unit) or GOP corresponding to allowed delay and then selectively discards packets in order of importance in terms of layer dependency. In the experiment, the effects of packet loss on quantitative qualities are analyzed and the effectiveness of the proposed adaptation to packet loss is shown.
Even if the demands for ultra-high-quality multimedia contents are increasing, it is difficult to produce, encode, play and transport ultra-high-quality contents under the existing broadcasting environment. By the reason, various technologies for the UHD contents have been developed in order to satisfy the user's needs. In this paper, we propose a design methodology of a broadcasting system, which consists of two parts, for UHD services with two parts. At the transmit part of the proposed system can encode a video into several layered-bitstreams hierarchically, and then transport each bitstream over heterogeneous networks. The receiver part can play the received video by composing the separated bitstreams. The proposed system can adaptively provide both HD and UHD contents according to user's reception conditions by using the heterogeneous networks.

T-DMB (Terrestrial-DMB) service is now available in the metropolitan area, but due to the bandwidth limitation, it is allowed to provide up to CIF resolution. As users' requests for high-quality mobile multimedia services are rapidly increasing and additional bandwidth can be provided by adopting the hierarchical modulation transmission technology, the research on the Advanced Terrestrial-DMB(AT-DMB) service using the SVC(Scalable Video Coding) scheme is being actively studied. In this paper, through computer simulations, first, while keeping the current T-DMB service unchanged, the visual qualities of AT-DMB services are investigated by varying the additional bandwidth. Then, by considering the cases that the overall bandwidth can be allowed to dynamically allocate to the T-DMB/AT-DMB video services, the performance characteristics between two layers are compared over the different kinds of video sequences.

One of the existing terrestrial multi-channel DTV service frameworks, called KoreaView, provides four programs, composed of MPEG-2 based one HD video and H.264/AVC based three SD videos within one single 6MHz frequency bandwidth. However the additional 3 SD videos can not provide enough quality due to its reduced spatial resolution and low target bitrates. In this paper, we propose a framework, which is called a terrestrial multi-channel high quality hybrid DTV service, to overcome such a weakness of KoreaView services. In the proposed framework, the three additional SD videos are encoded based on an H.264/SVC Spatial Base layer, which is compliant with H.264/AVC, and are delivered via broadcasting networks. On the other hand, and the corresponding three additional HD videos are encoded based on an H.264/SVC Spatial Enhancement layer, which are transmitted over broadband networks such as Internet, thus allowing the three additional videos for users with better quality of experience. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework, various experimental results are provided for real video contents being used for DTV services. First, the experimental results show that, when the SD sequences are encoded by the H.264/SVC Spatial Base layer at a target bitrate of 1.5Mbps, the resulting PSNR values are ranged from 34.5dB to 42.9dB, which is a sufficient level of service quality. Also it is noted that 690kbps-8,200kbps are needed for the HD test sequences when they are encoded in the H.264/SVC Spatial Enhancement layer at similar PSNR values for the same HD sequences encoded by MPEG-2 at a target bitrate of 12 Mbps.
The existing QoS mechanisms for video streaming are short of the consideration for various user environments and the characteristic of streaming applying programs. In order to overwhelm this problem, studies on the video streaming protocols exploiting scalable video coding (SVC), which provide spatial, temporal, and qualitative scalability in video coding, are progressing actively. However, these protocols also have the problem to deepen network congestion situation, and to lower fairness between other traffics, as they are not equipped with congestion control mechanisms. SVC based streaming protocols also have the problem to overlook the property of videos encoded in SVC, as the protocols transmit the streaming simply by extracting the bitstream which has the maximum bit rate within available bandwidth of a network. To solve these problems, this study suggests TCP-friendly network adaptive SVC streaming(T-NASS) protocol which considers both network status and SVC bitstream property. T-NASS protocol extracts the optimal SVC bitstream by calculating TCP-friendly transmission rate, and by perceiving the network status on the basis of packet loss rate and explicit congestion notification(ECN). Through the performance estimation using an ns-2 network simulator, this study identified T-NASS protocol extracts the optimal bitstream as it uses TCP-friendly transmission property and perceives the network status, and also identified the video image quality transmitted through T-NASS protocol is improved.
