  • A smart grid networks delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers using digital technology with two-way communications to control appliances at consumers' homes to save energy, reduce cost and increase reliability and transparency. Security is critically important for smart grid networks that are usually used for the electric power network and IT environments that are opened to attacks, such as, eavesdroping, replay attacks of abnormal messages, forgery of the messages to name a few. ZigBee has emerged as a strong contender for smart grid networks. ZigBee is used for low data rate and low power wireless network applications. To deploy smart grid networks, the collected information requires protection from an adversary over the network in many cases. The security mechanism should be provided for collecting the information over the network. However, the ZigBee protocol has some security weaknesses. In this paper, these weaknesses are discussed and a method to improve security aspect of the ZigBee protocol is presented along with a comparison of the message complexity of the proposed security protocol with that of the current ZigBee protocol.

  • Smart grid is a modernized electrical grid that uses information and communication technologies to gather and act on information, such as information about the behaviors of suppliers and consumers, in an automated fashion to improve the efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of the production and distribution of electricity. However, with the advent of cyber crime, there are also concerns on the security of the infrastructure, primarily that involving communications technologies. In this work, we make an in-depth investigation on the issue of security services and network loads on Smart grid. Through simulation, we analyze the relations between security services and network loads. The experimental results of this study will contribute toward designing an advanced Smart grid system that offers better quality of services. Also, the approach proposed in this study can be utilized to derive new and valuable insights in security aspects.

  • This Study suggests security directions to reconstruct separate network of Smart Grid and information communication network as one communications system and implement Smart Grid integrated information communication network. In addition, it suggests prevention directions to prevent future cyber attacks by reorganizing network as the key three-stage network and separating TCP/IP four layers that consist of existing information communication network from Smart Grid. Moreover, it suggests the foundation for the study and the test by providing current problems of Smart Grid, weak points, and three security models. • We present the concept of applying Wireless Mesh Networking (WMN) technology into Smart Grid, which is recently rising as a potential technology in various areas thanks to its advantages such as low installation costs, high scalability, and high flexibility. Smart Grid is an intelligent, next-generation electrical power network that can maximize energy efficiency by monitoring utility information in real-time and controlling the flow of electricity with IT communications technology converged to the existing power grid. WMNs must be designed for Smart Grid communication systems considering not only the high level of reliability, QoS support and mass-data treatment but also the properties of the traditional power grid. In addition, it is essential to design techniques based on international standards to support interoperability and scalability. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of IEEE 802.11s based Smart Grid Mesh Networks by conducting preliminary simulation studies with the ns-3 simulator. We also outline some challenging issues that should be reviewed when considering WMNs as the candidate for Smart Grid communication infrastructure.

  • This paper aims to identify and clarify the cyber security risks and their interaction with the power system in Smart Grid. The EMS and other communication networks interact with the power system on a real time basis, so it is important to understand the interaction between two layers to protect the power system from potential cyber threats. In this study, the optimal power flow(OPF) and Power Flow Tracing are used to assess the interaction between the EMS and the power system. Through OPF and Power Flow Tracing based analysis, the physical and economic impacts from potential cyber threats are assessed, and thereby the quantitative risks are measured in a monetary unit.

  • The emergence of the automated smart grid has become an essential device for responding to these problems and is bringing progress toward a smart grid-based society. Smart grid is a new paradigm that enables two-way communication between electricity suppliers and consumers. Smart grids have emerged due to engineers' initiatives to make the power grid more stable, reliable, efficient and safe. Smart grids create opportunities for electricity consumers to play a greater role in electricity use and motivate them to use electricity wisely and efficiently. Therefore, this study focuses on power demand management through machine learning. In relation to demand forecasting using machine learning, various machine learning models are currently introduced and applied, and a systematic approach is required. In particular, the GP learning model has advantages over other learning models in terms of general consumption prediction and data visualization, but is strongly influenced by data independence when it comes to prediction of smart meter data.

  • This paper presents problems of network technology in smart grid and implements a blockchain-based LoRa multi-hop network to solve them. Since some smart grid applications are operated in harsh environments, it is difficult to establish communication infrastructure. We propose a LoRa network with multi-hop using the Flooding routing protocol. Smart grid environment composes an independent network using various power grid protocols depending on the application. Since this has a problem that an independent infrastructure must be established for each network, a single gateway device supports multiple power grid protocols to implement a method for network integration. Lastly, the author applied Hyperledger-based blockchain to the LoRa network to ensure the integrity of data in a smart grid environment, and strengthened security by physically distributing it. After constructing the three suggestions on the actual test bed, we confirmed that the network operates normally through experiments.

  • The smart grid, a new open platform, is a core application for facilitating a creative economy in the era of the Internet of Things (IoT). Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is one of the components of the smart grid and a two-way communications infrastructure between the main utility operator and customer. The smart meter records consumption of electrical energy and communicates that information back to the utility for monitoring and billing. This paper investigates the impact of a cybersecurity attack on the smart meter. We analyze the cost to the smart grid in the case of a smart meter attack by authorized users based on a high risk scenario from NESCOR. Our findings could be used by policy makers and utility operators to create investment decision-making models for smart grid security.
