  • Variable speed limit(VSL) is a useful speed management tool for alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing traffic safety. The purpose of this study is to identify promising freeway segments for safety enhancement through VSL operations. An ordered probit model was adopted to capture factors affecting freeway crash severity that can be used to support decision making for selecting the promising segments. Pseudo elasticity and marginal effects, which are outcomes of the ordered probit analysis, were used to determine priority of promising segments for traffic safety. The results of this study would be useful in installing VSL systems and developing traffic control and operations strategies in practice.

  • Prediction models for a corporate bond rating in existing studies have been developed using various models such as linear regression, ordered logit, and random forest. Financial characteristics help build prediction models that are expected to be contained in the assigning model of the bond rating agencies. However, the ranges of bond ratings in existing studies vary from 5 to 20 and the prediction models were developed with samples in which the target companies and the observation periods are different. Thus, a simple comparison of the prediction accuracies in each study cannot determine the best prediction model. In order to conduct a fair comparison, this study has collected corporate bond ratings and financial characteristics from 2013 to 2017 and applied prediction models to them. In addition, we applied the elastic-net penalty for the linear regression, the ordered logit, and the ordered probit. Our comparison shows that data-driven variable selection using the elastic-net improves prediction accuracy in each corresponding model, and that the random forest is the most appropriate model in terms of prediction accuracy, which obtains 69.6% accuracy of the exact rating prediction on average from the 5-fold cross validation.

  • Based on household characteristics, this study analyzes the sources of changes in income class. Using KLI panel data in 1998 and 2001, household equivalent income is calculated and households whose income class is changed are identified. Various household characteristics are examined to understand which characteristics are influential in income class changes. Empirical estimations are carried out by employing an ordered probit model. Region of residence, age of household head, education level of the head, the number of employed family members in 1998, and a change in the number of employed family members are shown to be statistically significant. Calculation of marginal probability based on the ordered probit estimation results show that the probability of upward movement in income class decreases as a household lives in rural areas, while the probability of upward movement increases as the household's head is better educated, the number of employed family members are higher and there is a higher increase in the number of employed family members. Age of the head has mixed results; while the probability of upward movement in income class decreases as the head gets older for the households in middle and high income classes, that probability increases as the head is in the range of the 40s and the 50s in low income class households.

  • The South Korean government is looking for a solution to the ever-growing problems of traffic congestion, and surging international oil prices: the use of the humble bicycle to get to places. However, Many people feel inconvenient using bicycle because of the insufficient bicycle infrastructure and lack of the safety and connectivity between existing pathways. In this study, bicycle level of service model using ordered probit model is developed considering safety, convenience, connectivity, and factors that affect bicycle LOS. The ordered probit model would be recommended for the research which relates in choice, preference and strength etc. Bicycle level of service criteria is calculated by applying this model reflecting bicyclist's point of view. The model which develops from this research which accomplishes a bicycle level of service evaluation and represent alternative solution to encourage bicyclist. It is believed that the proposed model would be greatly utilized in bicycle network planning, bicycle road and facility alternatives testing, projects funding priority.

  • Recently, there is a growing interest in housing policy to prepare for the aging society. The purpose of this study is exploring the factors that explain housing consumption and adjustment of pre-retirees after retirement. 1,351 samples were collected from A bank and analyzed. There categories of housing consumption adjustment were considered including downsizing, maintain, and upsizing. Gender, educational level, housing size, housing type, asset size, and willingness to work after retirement were examined to see if they can explain the housing consumption adjustment of pre-retirees using orderd- probit model. The finding of this study is that housing size, asset size, and willingness to work after retirement statistically significantly explain the housing consumption adjustment. At specific, firstly, if the current size of the housing is relatively large, it is highly likely to downsize housing after retirement. Second, pre-retiree whose assets exceeded 1 billion won were more likely to scale up housing than assets of over 300 million to less than 500 million won. Lastly, unless there is absolutely no willingness to work after retirement, it is indicated that it intends to up-sizing consumption rather than down-sizing adjustment. The results of this study can provide useful information for the housing policy in order to prepare for the (post) aged society.

  • This paper analyzes the impact of the mother's employment on her time investment in children's career decisions. Parental conversations with high school children and the parents' effects on children's career decisions are used as the proxies for the quantity and quality of time investment, respectively. For the empirical analysis, IV ordered-probit regressions are fitted to the KLIPS data. Other things being equal, the mother's employment does not cast any statistically significant impact on the quantity and quality of time input for children in high school. The effect of mother's employment on her time investment in children is positive for professional jobs while negative for nonprofessional jobs, but both lack the weight of statistical significance.

  • Although concerns about the opinion shopping have been continuously raised in the audit market, there has been little research on empirical evidence on the existence of audit opinions. For this reason, this study empirically confirmed whether the opinion shopping exists. At first, we measured thresholds of audit opinion issuing of two groups(changed or not-changed auditors). After that, the difference analysis was conducted to verify whether the thresholds of the audit opinion issuing was significant difference between two groups. As a result of the study, there was no significant difference in the thresholds of audit opinion issuing between two groups. This result can be interpreted that the audit opinion shopping is not a general phenomenon in the external audit market. The contribution of this study is to empirically confirmed that audit opinion shopping does not exist in the external audit market.

  • This study analyses the factors that affect the satisfaction of school meals program. To obtain the data, 54 elementary, middle and high schools in Jeonbuk area were chosen for survey. A ordered probit model analysis is conducted to identify the key explanatory variables that affect the satisfaction of school meals about elementary, middle and high school's students. Also, a ordered probit model is used to calculate marginal effects of several key variables. The study finds that key factors that affect to increase the satisfaction of school meals are rural area schools, elementary school's students, and education for school meals or food nutrition. The satisfaction of school meals in urban and rural school's students are significantly different. Also, the satisfaction of school meals about elementary, middle and high school's students are significantly different. To do this, importance of school meals is to build up the safe agricultural supply system. For safe agricultural supply system, local agricultural products provided in school meals should be supplied based on GAP, HACCP certificated companies such as US FTS(Farm to School) program.

  • The purpose of this study is two-fold : the one is to examine the causal relationship between domestic large firms' win-win growth effort and their financial performance by fiscal years; and the other is to develop a quantitative win-win growth index to overcome the limitation of the current one mainly using a survey method developed by NCCP (National Commission for Corporate Partnership). To serve the first purpose, we take a sample of 128 large companies whose win-win growth indices as of year 2011 and 2012 were evaluated by NCCP. We use their respective fiscal year's financial data to select 62 candidate financial ratios, which are then used in subsequent empirical tests. For the tests, we employ ordered probit model with stepwise selection method and two-way ANOVA with randomized block design to identify which of the 62 financial ratios are statistically significant ones to affect the firms' win-win growth index as well as to determine if the firms' win-win growth effort would cause their financial performance positively. To serve the second purpose, we devise a model using the 123 firms' 45 financial ratios, which employs ordered probit model with stepwise selection, and the validation of the model follows. We claim that the model suggested in this study serve as an alternative complementing the current one as it can produce the index in a more objective and swift manner using the firms' publicized financial statements.
