  • Failure modes result in fracture or tearing, which may cause deterioration of resistance and reduction of inelastic deformation capacity. The potential failure modes for Special Concentrically Braced Frames (SCBFs) include fracture or tearing of the brace, net section fracture of the brace or gusset plate, fracture of the gusset plate welds, shear fracture of the bolts, block shear, excessive bolt bearing deformation, and buckling of the gusset plate. HSS tubular braces are commonly used in SCBFs, and net section fracture of the tubular brace may also occur through the brace net section at the end of the slot cut into the tube to slip over the gusset plate. This failure mode is categorized as a tension failure mode, and may cause dramatic loss of resistance and brittle behavior. Net section reinforcement is required according to AISC design specifications (AISC 2001). In this paper, the need to reinforce the net section area was discussed. Initially, the results of the net section fracture tests done by the University of California in Berkeley were presented with the modeling of these tests using FE models. To investigate the possibility of net section fracture in an actual frame, the slot end hole model was adapted to the frame FE model, and alternate near-fault histories were applied with tension-dominated cycles, since previous analyses showed that loading history was the most critical factor in net section fracture. The need for this reinforcement (cover plate) and the tension-dominated near-fault history were investigated.

  • The purpose of this paper was to investigate the block shear and the fracture in the net section, according to AISC Specifications, by analysing the shear lag effect in the block shear rupture of the single angle with three or four bolt connection. Specimen with three or four bolt connections showed that failure generally went from block shear with some net section failures to classic net section failures. From the test results, showed that the connection length, the thickness of angle, and reduction factor, which affect the block shear rupture, were investigated. According to the test results, it is suggested that the calculation of the net section rupture capacity by using the reduction factor of U, that was suggested by Kulak, is needed.

  • This paper concentrates on the development of simplified and effective algorithm for optimum reinforced concrete(RC) member design. After constructing the data base of predetermined RC sections which are arranged in the order of increasing resistant capacity, the relationship between the section identification numbers and resistant capacities of sections is estabilished by regression and it can be used to obtain the initial solution(section) which satisfies the design constraints imposed. Assuming that there exists the optimum solution. The optimization of the entire structure is accomplished through the individual mumber optimization.

  • Velocity variability of Masan Inlet in the northernpart of Chinhae Bay is studied on the basis of the cross-sectional net velocity distributions and its root-mean-square. They were calculated during three consecutive cycles at spring tide as well as two cycles at near tide with precipitations in June and July 1985. During the spring tide, net ebb flow take place in the western channel while net flood flow in the eastern channel of the cross-section. On the contrary, the direction of both net flows during the neap tide with precipitations is reversed. R.M.S. isotachs show that the highest velocity is 15 cm/sec at spring tide and 10.3 cm/sec at neap tide, and the greatest velocity is persistently found at the surface layer of the western channel of the cross-section at each tidal cycle. It is shown that the major part of constituents of the constant flow in the Inlet is the tidal residual current. The density-driven current, however, plays an important role afer the heavy precipitations.

  • An approximate method for the calculation of creep deflections of reinforced concrete beams under sustained service loads is proposed. The position of neutral axis and strain and stress distribution of fully cracked section after creep is determined from the requirements of strain compatibility and equilibruim of a section and then the long-term flexural rigidity of fully cracked section is determined based on the new neutral axis. The long-term flexural rigidity of uncracked section at the level of the reinforcenment. The approach of calculating long-term effective flexural rigidity and defections is similar to the current American Concrete Institue procedure for calculating effecitve moment of inertia and short-term deflections. The accuracy of the analysis is verified by comparison with several experimental mesurements of beam deflectons. The result is good between the theotetical values and mesured valus.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present an analytical method for free vibration of stepped horizontally curved members on two-parameter elastic foundation. The ordinary differential equations governing the free vibration of such beams are derived as non-dimensional forms including the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing equations are solved numerically for the circular, parabolic, sinusoidal and elliptic curved beams with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints. As the numerical results, the lowest four natural frequency parameters are presented as the functions of various non-dimensional system parameters. Also the typical mode shapes are presented.

  • In this paper, the stress resultants and displacements of simply supported curved girder based on the flexural torsional theory considering torsional warping effects are analyzed. And elastic equations of continuous curved girder are obtained by using energy method. Also, bending moment warping torsional moment diagram, pure torsional moment diagram, shearing force diagram, and deflection diagram of continuos curved girder bridge subjecting to vertical loads and uniform loads are presented.

  • A tension member that has a high-strength bolt fastened to a standard bolt hole increases structural resistance but causes problems from workability or economic perspectives. In this research, a total of 28 samples that have standard and over bolt holes as the tension member's high-strength bolted connection were made and a tension test was conducted. The change of strength of the connection has been confirmed by comparing the tension load of standard and over bolt hole samples obtained from the test results with the design strength due to net section and end distance. Samples made with over bolt holes had a lighter tension load than that of samples made with standard bolt holes, exceeded the design strength of present design standards, and although decrease in strength was inevitable due to the over bolt hole, their safety was satisfactory.
