This research deals with the properties of fresh and hardened high-performance concrete(HPC) incorporating high-reactivity metakaolin(HRM). The properties of fresh and hardened state concrete were investigated included air content, slump flow, setting time, heat of hydration, compressive strength, resistance to chloride-ion penetration, abrasion and repeated freezing and thawing. The properties of the HRM concrete were also compared with those of the portland cement concrete and silica fume(SF) concrete. The laboratory test results indicate that HRM material can be used as a supplementary cementitious material to produce high-performance concrete.
Thermal cracks are occured when thermal stress due to the hydration of cement exceeds the
tens~le strength of concrete. Since crackmg causes poor durability of concrete, the effect of ther
ma1 cracking should be includod for the design and construction of massive concrete structures.
In this study, an experiment is performed for the investigation of time dependent thermal
stress history. In order to evaluate thermal stress. two methods are employed. One 1s the evaluation
method of thermal stress based on the measurement from embedment stram gauge with
non-stress strain gauge and the other 1s based on the measurement from concrete stress gauge.
As a result of this study, the value corrected by the former shows good agreement with the
latter. The validity of the proposed method for the evaluation of thermal stress 1s explored.

The fly ash has been widely used in the latest to complement the performance and economical efficiency of the concrete which uses only a normal portland cement, the pulp ash gained through the incineration of paper sludge is possible to be used as the material of concrete because it contains the properties similar to the previous fly ash in ingredients and physical characteristics. Therefore, this research has tested physical characteristics by replacing 20% of fly ash used with the paper ash to solve the problem which lowers the early strength caused when the fly ash was used. As a result, it showed that the fluidity becomes lower and the compressive strength becomes increased by using paper ash. In addition, after mixing the paper ash with the fly ash, it showed that time and heating amount of the 2nd peak of the minor heat of hydration affecting the revelation of strength was equivalent to the combination for normal portland cement, and also indicated that the compressive strength for 3 days is superior to the combination of the fly ash. Therefore, if the paper ash having a regular fineness is used, it was effective in improving the early strength of concrete used the fly ash.

Recently, due to the increase of high-rise buildings construction, many researches for making harden of concrete earlier and remove of forms faster are being performed to reduce construction period. The purpose of this study is to analysis which mixing condition and curing temperature of early strength concrete. Porperties of concrete by the different factors, such as the type of active admixtures, mineral admixtures, curing temperature, the amount of binder, etc. Through the test of concrete using the different type of admixture, PC type was more excellent than PNS type admixture. The concrete Strength remarkably will be able to confirm that decreases from temperature below 12$^{\circ}C$.

The surface of particles was energetically modified by inter-grinding OPC and BFS in vibration mill for improvement of the early strength and low-heat evolution of concretes. BFS was pre-grinding in ball-mill to 2535(BS2) and 3245 $cm^2/g$(BS3), in blaine surface area. The inter-grinding time in vibration mill was changed from 10 minutes to 30 minutes. And Mixing ration of BFS to OPC was changed in 60, 70, 80%. After inter-grinding, the change of specific surface area, particle size distribution, hydration heat of cement and compressive strength of mortar were measured. As the result of comparison test with LHC, it was found that the mixture and inter-grinding time satisfying the value of over 100% of compressive strength for 7 days and under 170J/g of heat of hydration for 72 hours. and it was confirmed that the possibility of low heat slag cement utilizing blast furnace slag(BS2, BS3) with the low fineness in high volumes.
The effect of MgO in synthesis of alinite clinker was investigated. Clinker of alinite composition ratio and alintite clinker substituted for MgO of 3.77% were sintered at $760^{\circ}C$ and between $800^{\circ}C$ and $1,400^{\circ}C$ at the interval of $100^{\circ}C$. Synthesized phases and hydration heat of alinite clinker with MgO and without MgO were then investigated. As a result, alinite, CCA, ${\beta}-C_2S$ and f-CaO phases are synthesized in alinite clinker without MgO sintered at $1,300^{\circ}C$, while only alinite phase is synthesized in alinite clinker with MgO sintered at $1,300^{\circ}C$ with the highest synthesis rate. Heat evolution of alinite clinker with MgO has no induction period.
Bentonite has been proposed as a buffer and backfill material for high-level radioactive waste repository. Under such repository environment conditions, bentonite is subjected to combined thermal, hydrological, mechanical, and chemical processes. This study evaluates the feasibility of applying X-ray CT technology on the characterization of bentonite under hydration conditions using a newly developed testing cell. The cylindrical cell is made of platic material, with a removable cap to place the sample, enabling to apply vertical pressure on the sample and to measure swelling pressure. The hydration test was carried out with a sample made of Gyeonju bentonite, with a dry density of 1.4 g/cm3, and a water content of 20%. The sample had a diameter of 27.5 mm and a height of 34 mm. During the test, water was injected at a constant pressure of 0.207 MPa, and lasted for 7 days. After one day of hydration, bentonite swelled and filled out the space inside the cell. Moreover, CT histograms showed how the hydration process induced an initial increase and later progressive decrease on the density of the sample. Detailed profiles of the mean CT value, CT standard deviation, and CT gradient provided more details on the hydration process of the sample and showed how the bottom and top regions exhibited a decrease on density while the middle region showed an increase, especially during the first two days of hydration. Later, the differences in CT values with respect to the initial state decreased, and were small at the end of testing. The formation and later reduction of cracks was also characterized through CT scanning.
One of the most vulnerable properties in concrete is tensile cracking, which usually happens at early ages due to hydration heat and shrinkage. In order to accurately predict the early age cracking, it needs to find out how stress-crack opening relation is varying over time. In this study, inverse analyses were performed with the existing experimental data for wedge-splitting tests, and the parameters of the softening curve for the stress-crack opening relation were determined from the best fits of the measured load-CMOD curves. Based on the optimized softening curve, variation of fracture energy over time was first examined, and a model for the stress-crack opening relation at early ages was suggested considering the found feature of the fracture energy. The model was verified by comparisons of the peak loads, CMODs at peak loads, and fracture energies obtained from the experiments and the inverse analysis.
Structure and characteristic of the films blended chitosan matrix with silk fibroin, extracted from Bombyx mori, were studied by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, FT-IR spectra analysis, SEM photographs, contact angle measurement and water absorbency in order to use as biomaterials. The blend films of $0\~30 wt\%$ fibroin content were prepared in acetic solution with $Li^+$ ion. It was found that the crystallinity of chitosan/fibroin blend films was decreased by the presence of intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonding between animo groups of chitosan and carbonyl groups of fibroin. As the proportion of fibroin in the blend increased, anhydrous crystalline phase of chitosan disappeared, and hydrated crystalline phase decreased, and $\beta$-structure crystalline phase of fibroin was formed. Therefore the blend films were crystallized into two different crystalline region of chitosan and fibroin. Surface hydrophilicity and water absorbency increased with blending fibroin. Above 20 $wt\%$ fibroin content, hydrogel film was formed. The surface and section of the film showed uniform microstructure on SEM photographs.
An enhancement in the performance and safety of a high-level waste repository requires a validation of its engineered barrier. An engineering-scale test (named "KENTEX") has been conducted to investigate the thermal-hydro-mechanical behaviors in the engineered barrier of the Korean reference disposal system The validation test started on May 31, 2005 and is still under operation. The experimental data obtained allowed a preliminary and qualitative interpretation of the thermal-hydro-mechanical behaviors in the bentonite blocks. The temperature was higher as it became closer to the heater, while it became lower as it was farther away from the heater. The water content had a higher value in the part close to the hydration surface than that in the heater part. The relative humidity data suggested that a hydration of the bentonite blocks might occur by different drying-wetting processes, depending on their position. The total pressure was continuously increased by the evolution of the saturation front in the bentonite blocks and thereby the swelling pressure. Near the heater region, there was also a significant contribution of the thermal expansion of bentonite and the vapor pressure in the pores of the bentonite blocks.
