  • The purpose of this study was to analyze changing aspect of teacher and student's value in mathematics instruction. For this purpose, teacher and student's value are analyzed through value questionnaire by four times. The results of this study revealed that although value are individual's deep decision mechanism, it could change considerably by the time. Teacher wasn't compel students to follow her value. Rather, teacher was modified instruction goal to reflect students thinking what is important in mathematics lesson. First, in case of mathematical value, rationalism, objectism, mystery were convergent each other. And control was almost unchanged and openness has been onwards and upwards. Second, in case of mathematics educational value, understanding, pleasure, terminology and application were convergent each other. However achievement was almost unchanged. Also, to teach effectively, teacher using several kinds strategy while negotiate with student's value continuously. On the basis of these results, this paper includes several implications for the future study about values in mathematics which could be the critical factor in student centered instruction.

  • If students can use mathematics to solve their problems and learn the mathematical knowledge through it, they may think mathematics useful and valuable. This study is for the teaching through problem solving in mathematics education, which I consider in terms of the problem-based learning and mathematical modeling. 1 think mathematical modeling is applied to teaching mathematics as a problem-based learning. So I developed the teaching model, and showed the example that students learn the formal and hierarchic mathematics through mathematical modeling.

  • One of difficulties with which teachers meet is to have underachievers with no willingness and motivation for study involved in class. Mathematics underachiever are average or above average in their intelligence but their actual achievement in mathematics did not coincide to their intellectual capabilities. The teaching strategy for them is to motivate them to try to study mathematics and to experience the improvement in their mathematics grade. In this paper, we choose flipped classroom as the strategy of teaching basic mathematics to math underachievers and applied it to them. Then we wanted to make sure the possibility for applying flipped classroom to teaching math underachievers through the analysis of change in the scholastic achievement of students in mathematics and mathematical disposition. The results of this study are as followings; First, when we taught basic math to underachievers using a flipped classroom, we confirm that math underachievers with active participation improved scholastic achievements significantly. Second, the flipped classroom was led to positive effects in an affective domain. In particular, it showed the most noticeable change in the area of willingness to math problem-solving and perception about the value of mathematics.

  • This study examined the effect and structural relationship of math teachers' teaching ability and class activity types on learners' value perception, confidence, and interest of mathematics at the student level and teacher level. To this end, data from 2nd graders of korea middle school in TIMSS 2019 were applied to the multilevel structural equation model. As a result of the analysis, the teaching ability of math teachers had a positive effect on value perception, confidence, and interest of mathematics at the student level and teacher level. Also, math value perception and math confidence had a positive effect on math interest. and it was confirmed that the teaching ability of math teachers indirectly had a positive effect on math interest by mediating math value perception and math confidence. In addition, the math class activity of applying what was learned to problems had a positive effect on math value perception, but it had a negative effect on math interest. and the class activity of the same ability group had a positive effect on math confidence and math interest. This study presents meaningful implications for math classes in the school field through a multilevel analysis of the student level and the teacher level.

  • It is useless to say that time is precious and important. So it does when we emphasize the importance of studying the quality and efficiency of time in learning, especially in the learning of Mathematics. In this respect, this study aims to examine the overall structure of time application in the learning of Mathematics, understanding the state and problems of Mathematics education in respect of time application, and finally seeking to find the solutions for the problems. As a first step, the items below were examined for the solutions: First, the eight viewpoints of time in Mathematics education was examined and the meaning of each viewpoint was analysed. Second, the variables resulting from teachers was examined. The preconditions for mathematics education, the attitude towards Mathematics classes, viewpoints of mathematics, the forms of self-expression, the way of utterance can be considered as the variables mentioned above. Third, the variables resulting from students was examined. Learning attitude, specific activity(both meaningful and meaningless), practical uses of teaching tools, game activities, the ways of communication and problem solving can be examined as well. In conclusion, it needs to be stressed that Mathematics class should be the meaningful time for learners, parents, and teachers. The class should guarantee the satisfaction of the learners. In other words, even if physical time is applied the same to everyone, it may differ in degree of quality and value of time application according to the way one spends the time.

  • The goal of this study was to apply an expectancy-value model(Wigfield & Eccles, 2000) to explain changes in six multi-ethnic students' achievement motivation in mathematics during sixth (2012) to eighth (2014) grades. In order to achieve this goal, we used narrative research methods. Although individual students' achievement motivation and mathematics related life experiences differed, there are some common factors influencing their motivation development, especially (a) roles played by parents and teachers; (b) assessment of peers' competencies; (c) past learning experiences related to mathematics curriculum; (d) perception of the relationship between mathematics competency and other subjects; (e) home backgrounds; and (f) perceived task values. In this study, we achieved some insight into why some multi-ethnic students are willing to study hard to get good scores while others are uninterested in mathematics, and why some multi-ethnic students are likely to pursue new mathematical tasks and persist despite challenges, while others easily give up studying mathematics in the face of adversity. We argue that in order to increase and sustain multi-ethnic students' achievement motivation, educators and parents should recognize that motivation is contextually formulated in the intersection of current people, time, and space, not a personal entity formed in an individual's mind. The findings of this study shed light on the development of achievement motivation and can inform efforts to develop multi-ethnic students' positive motivation, which might influence their mathematics achievement and success in school.
