A Study on After-School Learning Activities and Students' Academic Achievement of Mathematics in Middle School (중학생의 방과후 수학교과 학습활동과 학업성취도에 관한 연구)

  • This study set out to analyze the learning types that most students were engaged in after school, to review the efficiency of private education through academic institutions or tutoring, and to examine the directions in the after-school learning in math under the current system. It also aimed to analyze the impacts of those after-school learning activities on school classes and to suggest some plans to help public education get back on the track. In the study the after-school learning activities in the math subject were categorized into taking classes at academic institutions, tutoring, and autonomous learning. The grades of the subject students were compared and analyzed for three semesters to find the directions right for the school classes.

Study on the Learning Effect of Mathematical Patterns Using LOGO Programming (LOGO 프로그래밍을 이용한 초등학교 수학 규칙성의 학습효과 연구)

  • 제 7차 교육과정부터 규칙성 영역의 학습이 도입되고 중요하게 다뤄지고 있지만, 학생들이 규칙성을 찾거나 도형 패턴을 나타내는 데 어려움을 겪고 있기 때문에, 본 논문에서는 규칙성을 LOGO 프로그래밍 언어를 통해 학습하고 그 효과를 분석하였다. 수학적 패턴의 유형은 생성방식에 따라서 (1) 반복패턴, (2) 대칭패턴, (3) 증가패턴, (4) 회전패턴, (5) 혼합패턴의 다섯 가지이다. 논 논문에서는 규칙성 영역에 대한 LOGO 수업의 효과를 분석하기 위해서, 각각 패턴에 대하여 평가 문항을 만든 후 수업전과 LOGO를 통한 수업 후에 평가를 실시하여 분석하였다. 사전평가 M 4.74에서 LOGO 수업을 실시 한 후에 평가에서 M 5.22로 LOGO 수업의 효과가 유의미(p<.05, p=0.016)하게 나타났다. 특히, 도형패턴에서 높은 향상도를 나타냈다.

A Comparative Study on Academic Achievement and Class Satisfaction of College General Mathematics according to Face-to-face Classes and Remote Classes (대면수업과 비대면 수업에 대한 대학일반수학 학업성취도와 수업만족도 비교 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to comparatively analyze academic achievement and class satisfaction in college general mathematics between face-to-face classes and remote classes. For this study, we selected 97 first-year students from three departments of an engineering college at M University. Among the subjects of the study, 39 students in Department A and 36 students in Department B took remote classes using pre-recorded class videos, and 22 students in Department C took face-to-face classes. The subjects of this study were evaluated by one professor as the same type of problem with the same content for the same textbook. Among the subjects of the study, 35 students in department A, 34 students in department B, and 17 students in department C who entered through rolling admissions were collected and homogeneity tests were conducted. And then we analyzed the scores of these students' midterm and final exams for general mathematics in the first semester of 2021. Also, we compared and analyzed the academic achievement and class satisfaction of general mathematics subjects for face-to-face classes and remote classes for all study subjects. The results of this study are as follows. First, there is a significant difference in students' academic achievement of general mathematics between face-to-face classes and remote classes. Second, there is a significant difference in class satisfaction between face-to-face classes and non- face-to-face remote classes.

A Study of Instruction of Internet(IoI)-based Collaborative Learning Method in Elementary School Sixth Grade Mathematics Class (초등학교 6학년 수학수업에서의 수업인터넷 기반 협력학습 수업방법 탐색)

  • The purpose of this study is to present various examples of collaborative learning based on the Instruction of Internet in the 6th grade elementary school mathematics class. So we introduce the design method of classroom environment for classroom Internet and give example of various teaching methods. This study was conducted for nine months from March to November, 2016, one sixth grade of elementary school in D area. During this period, we conducted Instruction of Internet-based collaborative learning to classify typical teaching cases. We classified into 5 type collaborative learning. First, collaborative learning in the classroom. Second, remote collaborative learning between classroom and classroom. Third, Live participation classes. Forth, project collaborative learning. Fifth, using virtual reality in collaborative learning. In addition, we could identify that there is a difference compared to the conventional learning. It became possible to conduct collaborative learning with other students simultaneously or have opening class with both parents and teachers by using Youtube. These examples can be presented as a case to depart from traditional mathematics class in one classroom. In this regard, we will be able to provide several implications about teaching methods utilizing smart device and Internet in future classroom.

Analysis on Behaviors of Using Calculator Based on Developmental Stage of Proportional Reasoning of Gifted Elementary Students (초등 영재 학생의 비례 추론 발달 단계에 따른 계산기 사용에 대한 행위 분석)

  • This study analysed 8 gifted students' behavior of using calculator in the 5th grade based on qualitative data of direct proportion class with the utilization of the calculator. Pretesting with questionnaire had been made to verify students' developmental stages of proportional reasoning, and the stage was categorized according to Baxter & Junker (2001). The learning contents were made of worksheet, and the researcher held the class for 60 minutes. For analysing data, record of class was gathered to make a transcript and analysed it with Guin & Trouche' behavior of using calculator type. According to the result, each type of the behavior affected students' development of proportional reasoning differently.

An Analysis of Teacher-Student Communication and Students' Mathematical Thinking in Sixth Grade Mathematics Classrooms (초등학교 6학년 수업에서의 수학적 의사소통과 학생의 수학적 사고 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide useful information for teachers by analyzing various levels of teacher-student communication in elementary mathematics classes and students' mathematical thinking. This study explored mathematical communication of 3 classrooms with regard to questioning, explaining, and the source of mathematical ideas. This study then probed the characteristics of students' mathematical thinking in different standards of communication. The results showed that the higher levels of teacher-student mathematical communication were found with increased frequency of students' mathematical thinking and type. The classroom that had a higher level of Leacher-student mathematical communication was exhibited a higher level of students' mathematical thinking. This highlights the importance of mathematical communication in mathematics c1asses and the necessity of further developing skills of mathematical communication.

A study on the relationship between learning styles of students and academic achievement in mathematics - Focusing on freshmen enrolled in a college of science and engineering of the medium-sized university (대학생의 학습유형과 대학 수학교과의 학업성취도 관계 연구 - 수도권 중규모 대학교의 이공대학 신입생을 중심으로)

  • This study examines the learning styles of freshmen enrolled in a college of science and engineering, and analyses the relationship between learning styles and academic achievement in mathematics to provide basic data for the teaching-learning methods, which are more suitable to learning styles of students. For the purpose of this research, a reliability analysis of Kolb's LSI is applied to 282 freshmen enrolled in a college of science and engineering of the medium-sized university. The outcomes of this survey are followings. Firstly, students hold higher positions in the order of converger, assimilator, accommodator, diverger among 4 learning styles. Secondly, while there is a positive corelation between abstract conceptualization[AC] and academic achievement, there is a negative corelation between concrete experience[CE] and academic achievement. Thirdly, as for academic achievement in mathematics, converger is superior to assimilator and accommodator. Finally, the correlation between learning styles and academic achievement is different by demographic characteristics. Based on these results, this study suggests the necessity for various teaching-learning strategies, which are adjusted to both academic characteristics of mathematics and learning styles. Also, the need for teaching methods, which help students to develop effectively four learning cycles, is proposed.

  • Mathematical communication is necessary to exchange mathematical idea among participants in teaching-learning process. The promotion of mathematical communication competence is clearly stated in many parts of the 2007 revised curriculum. As a result, mathematical communication tasks are contained in 'high school Mathematics' textbook. At this point of time when increasing importance of mathematical communication is realized, we will check over mathematical communication and analyze communicative tasks corner in 'high school Mathematics' textbook in this paper And thereby we hope this study help prepare for practical communicative tasks corner suggesting a way for invigoration of mathematical communication.

An Investigation on the Properties of the Argumentation for Students' Performing Geometric Tasks in Middle School-Based on the Type of the Rebuttal of Verheij (중학교 학생들의 기하 과제 해결을 위한 논증 활동의 특징 탐색 - Verheij의 반박 유형을 중심으로 -)

  • Students need to have opportunities to share their ideas with peers by taking part in the conversation voluntarily that is, by persuading others and reflecting the consequences. Recognizing the importance of this point, this study intended to examine students' argumentation occurring in the process of performing tasks in the math classroom. Also, it tried to explore the types of the argument that students used in the classroom and the reason why they employed them with a focus on 'rebuttal', which is one of the six elements of the argument scheme such as claim, data, warrent, backing, qualifiers, and rebuttal. The analysis of argumentation is based on the five argumentation schemes suggested by Verheij(2005). The experimental class was conducted twice a week with four participants who are third grade middle school students. In the argumentation class students were promoted to address two different kinds of geometrical tasks. After the second session of class, the researcher conducted the semi-structured interview. Accordingly, this study contributes to the existing research by making students to have concrete and active argumentation while obtaining the sound understanding of the argumentation.

  • This study was to investigate how the underachievers of mathematics in a non-leveling excellent high school would overcome the errors through the lessons based on the inductive thinking model in the equation of a circle. The results showed that when there were many stages to solve the problem, the students gave it up or forgot the stage they reached. In this case, if they had a revisit-opportunity to review their thinking process by planning ahead the stage to solve the problem and recording it, the omission error of the solving process and the error of wrong conclusions would be dramatically decreased. Moreover, they understood the mathematical concept, principle, and formula and remembered the learning contents extremely well through thinking by themselves in exploration-based activities and by using visualization for the problem and could solve the problem through these pictures besides algebraic expressions.
