A Study on the Problem-solving Process in Compensation Performance of Middle School Students (중학교 학생들의 보상문제해결 과정에 대한 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the problem-solving process of student's compensation con-cept.For this purpose, verbal interactions during activities were audio-taped, transcribed, and analyzed. And classroom observation and interview with students were carried out. Students who were superior in mathematical operations tended to explain compensation concept using proportionality. On the other hand, students who had low level of conservation concept can not connect 'relation of two variables' with 'conservation of equilibrium' at the formation process of com-pensation concept. Students who succeed in the formation of compensation concept showed high level of conservation concept. To promote the formation of compensation concept, it is necessary that how to develop proportional concept and conservation concept as closely related with compensation concept should be studied.

Cellular-Automata Based Node Scheduling Scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks (무선 센서 네트워크를 위한 셀룰러 오토마타 기반의 노드 스케줄링 제어)

  • Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) generally consist of densely deployed sensor nodes that depend on batteries for energy. Having a large number of densely deployed sensor nodes causes energy waste and high redundancy in sensor data transmissions. The problems of power limitation and high redundancy in sensing coverage can be solved by appropriate scheduling of node activity among sensor nodes. In this paper, we propose a cellular automata based node scheduling algorithm for prolonging network lifetime with a balance of energy savings among nodes while achieving high coverage quality. Based on a cellular automata framework, we propose a new mathematical model for the node scheduling algorithm. The proposed algorithm uses local interaction based on environmental state signaling for making scheduling decisions. We analyze the system behavior and derive steady states of the proposed system. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing protocols by providing energy balance with significant energy savings while maintaining sensing coverage quality.

  • We analyzed the validity of Science Highschool's selection process for the students from Science Gifted Education Center in order to suggest the direction of improvement. First of all, we invested the students' achievement in Mathematics and Science. As a result, we found that the students are not so good at mathematics and science through the selection process for the students from Science Gifted Education Center. However the difference is not statistically meaningful. On the contrary, The achievement of the students from Science Gifted Education Center is above average who were selected through the other course, e. g. the students who acquired the recommendation of principal, winner of prize in Olympiad of Mathematics or Science. We didn't find any meaningful result in the investigation of Affective Domain in Science. And then we found that the students prefer the generous environment through the selection process for the students from Science Gifted Education Center. As a whole, the selection process for the students from Science Gifted Education Center was not so satisfying. It should be reformed; we should examine the students' portfolio on the activities in the Science Gifted Education Center, and the entrance examination should include both divergent and convergent problems to find out the students' creativity. And the 3 dimensional process is also essential through the multiple steps.

  • It is important to make students do research for oneself. But the practice of inquiry activity is not easy in the mathematics education field. Intellectual curiosities of students are unpredictable. It is important to meet intellectual curiosities of students. We could get a sequence in the process solving a problem. This sequence was expressed in a form of the recurrence relation $a_n=a_{n-1}+a_{n-3}$ ($n{\geq}4$), $a_1=a_2=a_3=1$. We tried to look for the general terms of this sequence. This sequence is similar to Fibonacci sequence, but the process finding the general terms is never similar to Fibonacci sequence. We can get two general terms expressed in different form after our a great deal of effort. We hope that this study will give the spot of education energy.

Exploration of Foreign Curriculums for the Improvement of the Korean Middle School Statistical Curriculum: Focusing on learning elements in Korea, the United States, Singapore, and Japan (중학교 통계영역의 교육과정 개선을 위한 외국 교육과정의 탐색: 한국, 미국, 싱가포르, 일본의 학습 요소 중심으로)

  • This study compared and analyzed Korean, American, Singaporean, and Japanese middle school mathematics curriculum standards and the learning contents in statistics. Through a comparative analysis of the curriculums of these four countries, I found several overall features and differences between the curriculums. First, all four countries emphasized statistical education in a real-life context. Second, all four countries emphasized the use of technological tools. Third, there is a middle school grade in which only Korea does not deal with statistical domains. Fourth, the statistical areas of the United States, Singapore, and Japan focused on identifying trends or variability in data distribution. Fifth, I have found some contents that only Korea does not deal with. Based on this, the following recommendations were developed for the development of the next curriculum and new textbooks in Korea. First, the statistics curriculum should be changed from one that focuses on understanding statistical concepts to one that focuses on statistical activity that utilizes these concepts. Second, in terms of middle school statistical curriculum contents, the addition of interquartile range (IQR) and box plots as learning contents should be considered. IQR and box plots are simple and practical techniques for the comparison of multiple sets of data that can be easily learned and drawn by middle school level students and applied to real-life-related statistical data to expand statistical literacy. Through this study, it is suggested that IQR and box plots need to be included in the statistical curriculum of middle schools in Korea.

Predictors of Attitudes toward Own Aging among Middle-Aged and Elderly Adults -Panel Analysis Using Latent Growth Modeling- (중노년층의 본인의 노화에 대한 태도에 영향을 미치는 요인 -잠재성장모델을 이용한 패널분석)

  • This study examined the longitudinal changes of self-perceptions of own aging among middle-aged and elderly adults, using the latent growth modeling with the three waves of the "Aging and the Quality of Life of the Elderly in Korea", which sampled adults aged over 45 living in Seoul and Chuncheon. The dependent variable is attitudes toward own aging, the sub-scale of the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale developed by Lawton (1975). The results showed that the research participants' attitudes of their own aging deteriorated over time. In addition, the lower initial status of the research participants' attitudes of their own aging was associated with being older, being non-married, living in rural areas, attaining the lower level of education, having the fewer social activities, reporting the worse subjective economic status, and reporting the worse subjective health status. The slope of the research participants' attitudes of their own aging differed by the residence areas, educational attainments, subjective economic status and subjective health status. In particular, the difference of the initial status by educational attainments grew over time. Social welfare policy and practice implications are discussed for middle-aged and elderly adults to improve attitudes toward their own aging.

  • 본 논문에서는 경제학, 사회학, 수학 분야에서 수십년 전부터 연구해오던 죄수의 딜레마 게임의 협동진화에 대해 고찰해보고자 한다. 반복적 죄수의 딜레마 게임은 게임이론의 가장 기본적인 이론으로써, 사회적 상호작용, 경제활동, 국제관계 등 다양한 현상들을 모델링 하기 위한 하나의 방법이다. 그 중에 N명이 참가하는 반복적 죄수 딜레마 게임의 전략은 유전 알고리즘(Genetic Algorithms, GAs)을 통해 진화적으로 만들어 낼 수 있으며, 이 경우에 그 결과를 일반적인 내쉬 균형 이 아닌, 모든 개체들이 유전알고리즘을 통해 협동으로 수렴하도록 유도할 수 있다는 사실은 상당히 시사하는 바가 크다. 기존에 주로 연구되어오던 죄수의 딜레마 게임은 협동으로의 수렴과정에서 일반적으로 순위기반선택(Rank-based selection)과 1점 교배기법(1point crossover)을 사용한다. 그러나 순위기반선택은 모든 개체에 순위을 매겨야 하기 때문에, 개체수가 커질수록 성능이 저하되며, 1점 교배기법은 개체 값이 분산되어있을 경우, 최적해(Optimal solution)을 찾기 힘들다는 단점이 있어, 개체수가 많은 경우에 적용하기에는 비효율적이다. 본 논문에서는 토너먼트 선택기법(Tournament selection)과 자기 적응형 교배기법(Self-adaptive crossover)을 적용한 새로운 기법을 제안한다. 또한 기존 기법과 비교 실험을 통해 제안기법이 기존기법에 비해 평균 수렴시간과 수렴 횟수에서 뛰어난 성능을 보이고 있음을 확인하였다.

An Analysis of Elementary School Students' Interpretation of Data Characteristics by Cognitive Style (초등학생의 인지양식에 따른 자료해석 특성 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze elementary school students' interpretation of data characteristics by cognitive style. Participants were elementary students in sixth grade who can use integrated inquiry process skills. The students were divided into two groups, analytic cognitive style and wholistic cognitive style according to their response to Cognitive Style Analysis. They performed scientific interpretation of data activity. To collect data for this study, participants recorded the result on scientific interpretation of data activity paper and researcher recorded the situation on videotape and interviewed with participants after the end of interpretation of data to get additional data. And the findings of this study were as follows: First, the study analyzed interpretation of data characteristics by the operator regarding different situations of interpreting data according to cognitive style. For example, in the intermediate state, analytic-cognitive style students showed high achievement in identifying variables, and wholistic-cognitive style students were active in using prior knowledge to interpret data. Second, the result of analysis on the direction of interpreting data and preference for data types in interpreting data activities according to cognitive style are as follows: Wholistic-cognitive style students showed relatively high perception of information through the top-down approach. On the other hand, analytic-cognitive style students usually used the bottom-up approach gradually expanding detailed information to the scientific question-related answer and showed a preference data of the table type. Through the result, this study aimed to help establish a data interpretation strategy for learners to solve problems based on understanding of interpretation of data characteristics according to learners' cognitive style, and purposed the instruction design suggesting the data requiring various data interpretation strategies to develop learners' data interpretation ability.

Design and Development of STEM Program Based on Robotics Engineering Educational Model (로봇 엔지니어링 모델 기반 STEM프로그램 설계 및 개발)

  • According to a comparison study of international academic achievements, Korean students showed high academic achievements in science and mathematics, whereas their learning motivation appeared relatively low. Therefore, this work developed the robot-based STEM integrated education program reflecting an engineering class model. The title of the program is determined as 'animals' which are included in one section of the fourth grade science curriculum, are friendly to students, and are effective for robot application. Robot-based STEM program is consisted of three areas: robot education, subject-related course learning, and engineering education. The STEM program was reviewed by 14 teachers. The study result presented that regardless of knowledge of robot, most teachers gave positive response to program goal, composition of contents, application of robot.

  • The purpose of this research is to find out the usefulness of the Mentorship program for gifted science students. The usability has been proved by the results from a survey of a group of mentorship education students. Among those surveyed some are the students a gifted science education institute in university. Students have improved their own study ability, creative problem solving ability by performing the experiment planning on their own, and presented their papers through Mentorship program, and it is possibly observed that they have their own dignity as scientist by performing the actual science activities. Also, with the result of the survey, the effectiveness of the Mentorship program is very positive onto the students. Mentorship program is one of the educational method to widen the students' experience chances, and the depth of thought, and improve the scientific ability and creative problem solving ability.
