  • This study focuses on the use of mathematics notes in elementary school mathematics classes as a way of practicing mathematical communication, which was introduced as one of the main themes in the 2007 Mathematical Curriculum Revision. We investigate, through interviews with teachers and questionnaires, why and how mathematics notes are used and what are included in them, finding out various aspects of the use of mathematics notes such as the purposes, the necessities and the types. We draw some helpful suggestions for using mathematics notes in classes which has positive effects such as enhancing students' mathematical thinking and calculation ability. This study is to provide teachers with an appropriate information and basic materials on the use of mathematics notes.

  • I took a look at the note written by the students in math class. But, it was sort of a 'scratch paper' because they focused only on the problems or do not know the writing a notebook. Thus, I prepared organizational writing activity through learning-notebooks and analyzed the results from the writing activity through learning-notebooks in order to recognize the effects how the activity influences students' mathematics academic achievements and attitude. As a result, I could find that writing activity through learning-notebooks contributes to the enhancement of mathematics academic achievement and attitude.

  • This study is to figure out the activity of individual education with the note-taking in math class and correction and supportive explanations on attitudes toward learning of underachievers in mathematics in the second-year class of high school. This study has begun on the basis of the judgement that the note-taking especially correction and supportive explanations could help the underachievers in mathematics focus in class and develop good learning habits, and besides, students make a good relationship with teacher. According to this result, Many researches and exertions need to inform every student that mathematics is open and doing mathematics is a happy object. if the students who are underachievers were given the chance to organize their learning by themselves in the class with note-taking and correction and supportive explanations in the long-term, it should be effective enough to change their attitudes toward learning.

  • This study was carried out to investigate effects of the mindmap note-taking for the formation of the mathematical concepts structure and the matjematical creativity. Two classes were randomly chosen for this study from the third grade students of a middle school located in a medium size city. Thirty one lecture hours of the mindmap note-taking on the quadratic equation and functions were administered to the experimental class of 41 students, while same lecture hours of the ordinary instruction on the same contents were administered to the control class of 40 students. It was shown from this experiment that there ware significant evidences of improvement both in the formation of students' mathematical concepts structure and mathematical creativity through the mindmap note-taking lecture. Hence, the mindmap note-taking lecture is suggested for the improvement in the formation of student's mathematical concepts structure and mathematical creativity.

  • This study purposes to examine the learning achievements, attitude and reactions of elementary school students in fifth grade in mathematics after inducing to use of learning-notebook on mathematics. To achieve the purpose, this study focuses on the following matters. First, we develop the ways to write thoughts and activities in solving problems on learning-notebook for elementary school student in fifth grade. Second, we analyze the effects of the students' learning achievements after applying the ways to them in every mathematics learning activities at home and in school, etc. Third, this study examine the attitudes and reactions of the students toward mathematics after observing the learning activities and interviewing them. The results are summarized as follows. First, using learning-notebook helps to improve the performance of students. The average point of the final examination went up to 90.67 while the average of the first level test was 70.75. And almost each student's result have improved. Second, the interviews with the students show that they feel sense of accomplishment, their mathematical attitude has changed to be positive, and they've actively participated in class by using the learning-notebook. The students felt confidence and achievement and they were more interested in studying mathematics when they use the learning-notebook. Further, the students used the notes in doing their homework and at home studying. Finally, the learning-notebook had a good influence on the relationships between students and teachers. Moreover, learning-notebook serves as a medium that connects teacher and student's work.

  • This case study examined mathematics anxiety of a public high school sophomore who was unable to perform well in mathematics but later overcame his fear of mathematics. In this study, he showed high levels of mathematics anxiety in the assessment tools that evaluate mathematical anxiety factors. Cognitive and behavior treatments were carried out to alleviate his anxiety. First, cognitive treatments that were implemented include: understanding his own problems, writing down his thoughts on a record sheet, and changing intermediate and core beliefs. This paper explored cognitive and affective changes and reactions during the treatment process. Second, behavioral treatments that were conducted include: the divided-page method and peer tutoring. The divided-page technique involves the test subject to write down and solve his problems on a note to see what kind of cognitive and affective changes occur during the process. This paper also explored how Su-chul, an overly competitive student, changed and reacted cognitively and affectively through peer tutoring. The results revealed that Su-chul's exam anxiety, as well as other factors, has decreased. Moreover, he regained his self-confidence by solving math problems that he had felt difficult. His competitive attitude also has turned into a cooperative and thoughtful one.

  • Mathematics learning motivation is an important variable which is not only the primary goal of learning mathematics but also mediates the effects of the mathematics learning. Nevertheless, the present learning environment is full of impeding factors which reduce learners' motivation to learn mathematics and mathematical self-regulatory efficacy. The purpose of this study is to offer various suggestions for program to enhance and forster mathematics learning motivation based on empirical findings and theories on motivation, self-regulatory learning, regulatory focus, reducing academic stress and math anxiety. The concrete and practical ideas are suggested in terms of mathematical self-regulatory efficacy, learners' characteristics, learning task. The analysis of the effects revealed a positive effect on mathematical self-regulatory learning.

  • This study aims to analyze low-performing high school students' difficulties in constructed response (CR) mathematics assessments and explore ways to use writing activities to support student learning. The participants took CR assessments, engaged in guided writing activities across 15 lessons, and provided responses to our interviews. The study identified 20 types of student difficulties, which were sorted into two main categories: "mathematical difficulties" and "CR difficulties." The difficult nature of mathematics as a school subject included a lack of understanding of mathematical concepts, students' difficulty with mathematical symbols and notations, and struggles with word problems. Challenges specific to CR assessments included students' difficulties arising from the testing conditions unlike those of multiple-choice items, and included issues related to constructing appropriate responses and psychological barriers. To address these challenges in CR assessments, the study conducted guided writing activities as an intervention, through which six themes were identified: (1) internalization of mathematical concepts, (2) mathematical thinking through relational understanding, (3) diverse problem-solving methods, (4) use of mathematical symbols, (5) reflective thinking, and (6) strategies to overcome psychological barriers.
