  • The aim of this paper is to lay a foundation for perspectives on mathematics education as a science in the future. In order to do it, we reviewed the past and present state of affairs related to the development of research in mathematics education. Then, the features of mathematics education as a science and the interdisciplinary characteristic of its fields and methods are shown. Moreover, some perspectives on the tasks and methods of research in mathematics education in the future are suggested.

  • The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the characteristic methods of Mathematics Education. However, it is not simple to find the proper research method of Mathematics Education since Mathematics Education deals with the practice of teaching and learning mathematics, as well as the topics of scholarly research on the practice. Issues on Mathematics Education might vary with the epidemical aspects, which are basic attitudes toward the knowledge and understanding about Mathematics. Thus, this thesis will discuss two questions: First, What are the distinguishing characteristics of Mathematics Education as a field of study, when compared with ones of mathematics? Second, What are the characteristic methods of Mathematics Education, when compared with ones of other academic fields? For solving those questions, this thesis starts from meanings of science and education. And it also classifies Mathematics as formal science whereas Mathematics Education as social science by showing differences between Mathematics and Mathematics Education: research subject of Mathematics targets on mathematics itself and it uses the deductive method. On the other hand, Mathematics Education research handles the practice of mathematics of students and uses plausible reasoning. Also, it will also show why Mathematics Education shares lots of aspects with social science, not with natural science, which has many different characteristics from those of social science. Many researchers have agreed that Education should be categorized into the social science but misplaced Mathematics Education and Science Education into the natural science. It is true that physics and chemistry are natural science. And also it should be said that pure science is formal science. But it should be considered that just like Education, Mathematics Education and Science Education are in the category of social science.

  • The journals provide an academic arena for researchers in specific academic field, and play a crucial role in the process of formation and development of the academic field. The main purpose of this research was to investigate the familiarity, reputation, applicability, and preference of mathematics education journals. For this purpose, a survey was conducted for mathematics educators. As a result, the three journals , , and were notably preferred by mathematics educators, and the scores of familiarity, reputation, applicability, and preference were almost synchronized. On the other hand, mutual preference of mathematics education, mathematics, and education journals is an indicator of the communication among related academic fields. However, mathematics education researchers showed little preference toward mathematics and education journals, and vice versa.

  • In this study we reviewed the backgrounds, main claims, and teaching and learning of STEAM education, and analysed STEAM education on the viewpoint of didactics of mathematics. The core competences of STEAM are creativity, communication, convergence, and caring. We found that the theoretical background of caring among these competences is relatively very weak, and the main principles for teaching and learing are mainly included the theories of didactics of mathematics and of creativity. We need to approach very carefully and progressively to creativity education through STEAM, and also need to study on the background of the mathematical creativity.

  • Educating for character was emphasized in 2015 & 2009 reformed Korea natio nal mathematics curriculum. Thus, in this study we basically conducted to reali ze the creativity and character education. The purpose of this study is to succe ssfully lectures in the 'Mathematics Curriculum and Textbook Research' subject that is mathematics education department's major subject in teacher college, and to analyze the results. For the purpose of this study, the following study was carried out. First, we develop a lesson plan, teaching and learning plan, learning materials based on cr eativity and personality. Second, we taught a class based on the creativity and personality. Third, we analyze the effectiveness of the teaching efficacy about p re-service math teacher. Fourth, we conducted a qualitative analysis of the 'Mat hematics Curriculum and Textbook Research' subject lessons through the Classe s observer.
