  • The purposes of this study were to investigate pre-service mathematics teachers' perceptions of the role of cooperating teachers and teacher interactions during teaching practicum. Thirty-four pre-service mathematics teachers who finished student teaching participated in the study. The researcher collected data from various sources such as a questionnaire, interviews, and written documents. According to the results of the study, more than 50 percent of the participants showed negative responses to all of the questionnaire items on teaching activities or guidance of cooperating teachers. Cooperating teachers mainly played a role in the stage of reflection of student teacher's teaching practice, and they provided specific feedback and guidance of teaching and learning methods and contents. Cooperating teachers played roles as (mathematics) teacher educators, classroom observers, and co-teachers, but their roles as teacher educators or co-teachers should be more stressed for pre-service mathematics teachers' professional development.

  • The purpose of this study is to capture and explain the roles that signs and attention play in the fraction learning process, through a previous study that employs Deleuze's perspective on sign and the role of attention. From this case study of elementary school students, we found that signs are a prerequisite for learning and that learning takes place as different forms of attention shifts. The various types of semiotic resources used by teachers and students have been found to play an important role in coordinating collective attention between teachers and students.

  • In this paper, we deal with the teaching of parameter in the school mathematics. The roles of letters become different according to the letters-used context. That is, the meaning of letters may change in the course of being used. But specifying the roles of letters without understanding the distinction between the roles is not enough for students to learn the meaning of variables, specifically that of parameters. Therefore, the parameter-learning should focus on the dynamic change of roles. That implies flexible thinking and changing of perspectives.

  • Though there is no agreement on the definition of analogical reasoning, there is no doubt that analogical reasoning is the means of mathematical knowledge construction. Mathematicians generally have a tendency or desire to find similarities between new and existing Ideas, and new and existing representations. They construct appropriate links to new ideas or new representations by focusing on common relational structures of mathematical situations rather than on superficial details. This focus is analogical reasoning at work in the construction of mathematical knowledge. Since analogical reasoning is the means by which mathematicians do mathematics and is close]y linked to measures of intelligence, it should be considered important in mathematics education. This study investigates how mathematicians used analogical reasoning, what role did it flay when they construct new concept or problem solving strategy.

  • The purpose of this study is to classify a three-fold role of the history of mathematics through epistemological analysis. Based on the history of infinity and limit, the "potential infinity" and "actual infinity" discourses are described using four different historical epistemologies. The interdependence between the mathematical concepts is also addressed. By using these analyses, three different uses of the history of mathematical concepts, infinity and limit, are discussed: past, present, and future use.

  • Based on the framework of Huffered-Ackles, Fuson and Sherin(2004), data were analyzed in terms of 3 components: explaining(E), questioning(Q) and justifying(J) of students' mathematical concepts and problem solving in a math classroom. The students used varied presentations to explain and justify their mathematical concepts and ideas. They corrected their mathematical errors or misconceptions through discourses. In addition, they constructed and clarified their concepts and thinking while they were interacted. We were able to recognize there was a special feature in discourses that encouraged the students to construct and develop their mathematical concepts. As they participated in math class and received feedback on their learning, the whole class worked cooperatively in a positive way. Their discourse was improved from the level of the actual development to the level of the potential development and the pattern of interaction moved from ERE(Elicitaion-Response-Elaboration to PD(Proposition Discussion).
