  • The present study interviewed Eight novice supervisors (i.e., counselling psychologists with fewer than 5 years of experience) to investigate the need for formal supervision training. A consensual qualitative research method was used to analyze data, and the result found four main domains, 12 sub-domains, and 33 categories. The results also indicated that novice supervisors believe their own supervisors and expert supervisors have a great understanding of individual counselling cases, and that the role of a supervisor is to help supervisees' ability to understand each case better. Novice supervisors generally take their own supervisors as their role models, although most of them did not receive formal training from their own supervisors. Novice supervisors seek advice on supervision from their colleagues or their own supervisors but still find supervising difficult. They also believe there is a great need for clearly set guidelines or a manual on providing effective supervision.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine perceived supervisory satisfaction depending on the type of supervision. Twenty-six music therapy graduate students who enrolled in a practicum course participated in this study. All participants received four individual and four group supervision sessions over the course of the semester. After each supervision session, participants were asked to rate their satisfaction with supervision on the Supervisory Satisfactory Questionnaire(SSQ). Results showed that there was no significant difference in the mean ratings between individual and group supervision conditions, indicating that the type of supervision would not differently affect the perception of overall supervisory satisfaction. However, a detailed analysis of ratings for each questionnaire item and comments from the participants imply that while individual supervision would be perceived to meet supervisees' individual needs more effectively, satisfaction with group supervision would be less influenced by supervisor styles. This study would provide descriptive information of perceived satisfaction with supervision type as an initial trial toward suggesting the systematic approach to the music therapy supervision format. Further studies are needed to investigate how effective and culturally responsive supervision format would be structured to facilitate supervision process and maximize supervision outcome.

  • This study attempts to determine the strategy to improve the quality of staff supervision by exploring the experiences of the staff supervision in community welfare centers. For this purpose, multiple case study was performed by conducting in-depth interviews with 10 supervisors for the analysis data and analyzing the resulting themes. The key subjects from their experience were 'Supervisors recognize and prepare the supervision as Challenge and Aspiration', 'Supervision leaves only chaos and frustration', and 'Inspiration from the supervisor and infinite effort result in fruit'. Based on these results, this study suggests the following practical suggestions for the educational, administrative and supportive functions of Supervision. First, educational functions should be proposed as an extension of supervisor's education opportunities and manuals related to educational growth of supervision. Second, the administrative function should be changed to evaluate social welfare institution's evaluation framework so as to evaluate the supervision internal regulation and supervision according to it and various supervision models should be developed. Third, supportive supervision function that can be encouraged for supervisees should be enhanced. This study was meaningful because it presents specific suggestions for supervisors and supervisee's relation and situation in the community welfare center through the qualitative research method.

  • Psychotherapy supervision has long been regarded as a crucial component of psychotherapy education. Supervisory role is very important in supervision outcomes but the absence of and need for supervisor's education and training have continued to be emphasized. Supervisor's education and training can be used to better prepare and strengthen new professionals who serve in the supervisory role. This study reviewed on the literatures of supervisor's education and training, psychotherapy supervisor's development, and core competencies in supervision. As a result of this study, it introduced what supervisor should be trained. There were supervisor identity, ability to build supervisory relationship/alliance, ability to provide effective and summative feedback, knowledge of professional supervision and value of commitment to lifelong learning and professional growth. Also consensus has converged on the superordinate value of now crucial components in educating and training supervisors: didactic instruction and experiential practice. In conclusion, I discussed what should be considered in Korean supervisor's education and training and future research directions.

  • This study examined the difference in perception of supervision between supervisors and supervisees of community welfare centers. The survey subjects were 100 social workers working at social welfare centers in Seoul, Busan, and Incheon. The survey subjects were 62% women and 38% men in their 30s. Approximately 98% of supervisors and 88% of supervisees had a college degree or higher. Regarding the total working period of social welfare institutions, 82% of supervisors and 12% of supervisees had five years or more experience. Regarding the perception of the overall supervision between the supervisors and supervisees, the supervisors and supervisees reported a score of 3.79 and 3.46, respectively. In the perception of supervision according to function, in the case of administrative supervision recognition, the supervisors and supervisees reported a score of 3.78 and 3.43, respectively, and in the educational supervision recognition, the supervisors and supervisees reported a score of 3.65 and 3.29, respectively. Regarding supportive supervision perception, the supervisors and supervisees reported a score of 3.94 and 3.67, respectively. As shown in the above results, the difference in the perception of supervisor and supervisee's supervision by function shows that the supervisor's supervision by all functions is higher than that of the supervisee. As a result, such supervisions are relatively low among supervisees who are provided with supervisions than supervisions that are perceived as being provided by supervisors.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze music therapy students' experience of peer supervision as supervisee. A total of 17 participants in a university in Seoul, participated two times in structured dyadic peer supervision with a different student. In-depth, semi-structured interviews with the students were conducted and content analysis was used for analyzing the data. The results showed that peer supervision was recognized as an important technique as students experienced an accepting and supportive emotional climate that increased their motivation in terms of their professional growth. However, the students also experienced anxiety and dissatisfaction when they could not get a definitive answer from their peer or their peer could not solve their problem. The structure of peer supervision could help the participants by facilitating the process, providing directions, and promoting interaction between peer. This study is significant that it provides actual content in music therapy students' experiences as a supervisee, and enables students to apply peer supervision to their professional growth.

  • Field practicum is the core of Social Work education and plays a key role in the integration of theory and practice. To maximize the effectiveness of field education, it is important that both the faculty field liaison and field instructor are cooperated. However, the current field education is almost dependent on the supervision by field instructors. This study explores the perception on the areas of supervision by using the Q-methodology. As a result, the perception of faculty field liaison was categorized into three types and field instructors' was two. Their types of perception were partially overlapped rather than contrast. Findings of the study suggested the need for greater collaboration between academia and agencies.

  • The field instruction is essential to professional social work education. It is important to identify what factors make students' performance improve. 207 social work students who completed the field practicum in their undergraduate course were studied to determine factors associated with performance. The mean score of supervision was 2.6 and of practice performance was 56.7. Especially the score of theory integrated supervision was lowest among 5 supervision factors. Intervention skills and case-management skills were lower than 3 other performance factors. The significant correlation found to exist between supervision and performance. The higher the students' perception of supervision, the higher the students rating of their performance. Contributing most to students' performance was students' perceptions of the extent of supervision, especially theory integrated supervision and agency-based supervision, the extent of discussion about learning contracts, the amount of supervision. And the personal factors like students' gender and supervisors' career duration as a supervisor were found to be another predictors. That is, female students could improve their performance more than male students and more experienced supervisors could not improve students' performance. The findings highlight the importance of supervision and learning contract. Structuring field learning experiences would be needed. The supportive and educative consults for the supervisors, especially for the experienced supervisors, and ongoing efforts to evaluate the field instruction were suggested.

  • This study attempted to identify multi-dimensional influencing factors of working condition, job stress and supervision affecting care service personnel's job satisfaction by using structural equation model. From the results of this study, first, working condition (B=.247), job stress (B=-.610) and supervision (B=.635) were analyzed to have statistically significant effects upon job satisfaction as a dependent variable. Approximately 34.9% of job satisfaction was found to be explained through variables put into research models. Second, supervision affecting job satisfaction was found to have mediation effects on job stress. It will be necessary to apply the method to effective manpower management plan through supervision in the manager education course to improve job satisfaction for social service delivery manpower as well as care service in the future.
