  • Different physical processes, according to the atmospheric boundary layer types, were used in the Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS) of the Unified Model (UM) used by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). Therefore, it is important to verify the atmospheric boundary layer types in the numerical model to improve the accuracy of the models performance. In this study, the atmospheric boundary layer types were verified using observational data. To classify the atmospheric boundary layer types, summer intensive observation data from radiosonde, flux observation instruments, Doppler wind Light Detection and Ranging(LIDAR) and ceilometer were used. A total number of 201 observation data points were analyzed over the course 61 days from June 18 to August 17, 2019. The most frequent types of differences between LDAPS and observed data were type 1 in LDAPS and type 2 in observed(each 53 times). And type 3 difference was observed in LDAPS and type 5 and 6 were observed 24 and 15 times, respectively. It was because of the simulation performance of the Cloud Physics such as that associated with the simulation of decoupled stratocumulus and cumulus cloud. Therefore, to improve the numerical model, cloud physics aspects should be considered in the atmospheric boundary layer type classification.

  • In this study, we generated orthoimages and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to confirm the accuracy of possibility of geospatial information system generation, then compared the DEM with the topographic height values measured from Real Time Kinematic-GPS (RTK-GPS). The DEMs were generated from aerial triangulation method using fixed-wing UAV and rotary-wing UAV, and DEM based on the waterline method also generated. For the accurate generation of mosaic images and DEM, the distorted images occurred by interior and exterior orientation were corrected using camera calibration. In addition, we set up the 30 Ground Control Points (GPCs) in order to correct of the UAVs position error. Therefore, the mosaic images and DEM were obtained with geometric error less than 30 cm. The height of generated DEMs by UAVs were compared with the levelled elevation by RTK-GPS. The value of R-square is closely 1. From this study, we could confirm that accurate DEM of the tidal flat can be generated using UAVs and these detailed spatial information about tidal flat will be widely used for tidal flat management.

  • In this study, we propose an approach for calibrating the elevation of a DEM (Digital Elevation Model), one of the key data in realizing unmanned aerial vehicle image-based precision agriculture. First of all, radiometric correction is performed on the orthophoto, and then ExG (Excess Green) is generated. The non-vegetation area is extracted based on the threshold value estimated by applying the Otsu method to ExG. Subsequently, the elevation of the DEM corresponding to the location of the non-vegetation area is extracted as EIFs (Elevation Invariant Features), which is data for elevation correction. The normalized Z-score is estimated based on the difference between the extracted EIFs to eliminate the outliers. Then, by constructing a linear regression model and correcting the elevation of the DEM, high-quality DEM is produced without GCPs (Ground Control Points). To verify the proposed method using a total of 10 DEMs, the maximum/minimum value, average/standard deviation before and after elevation correction were compared and analyzed. In addition, as a result of estimating the RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) by selecting the checkpoints, an average RMSE was derivsed as 0.35m. Comprehensively, it was confirmed that a high-quality DEM could be produced without GCPs.

  • The ground positions and elevations information called DEMs(Digital Elevation Models) which are extracted from the stereo aerial photographs and/or satellite images using image matching method have the natural errors caused by variant environments. This study suggests the method to evaluate DEMs using correlation values between the reference and the target DEMs. This would be strongly helpful for experts to correct these errors. To evaluate the whole area of DEMs in the horizontal and vertical errors, the target cell is matched for each reference cell using the correlation values of these two cells. When the target cell is matched for each reference cell, horizontal and vertical error was calculated so as to help experts to recognize a certain area of DEMs which should be corrected and edited. If the correlation value is low and tile difference in height is high, the target cell will be candidated as changed or corrupted cell. When the area is clustered with those candidated cells, that area will be regarded as changed or corrupted area to be corrected and edited. Using this method, the evaluation for all DEM cells is practicable, the horizontal errors as well as vertical errors is calculable and the changed or corrupted area can be detected more efficiently.

  • A fully nonlinear model accounting for swirling effect has been applied in analyzing the dynamic response for a classical swirl injector. The current work applied highly accurate Boundary Element Methods (BEMs) in assessing its static and dynamic characteristics. On the basis of moving surface treatment method and surface instability study, which are obtained from the previous static characteristics analysis in pressure-swirl injectors, this work was expanded for analyzing the dynamics of a classical swirl injector. The dynamic response through injector components for disturbed inflow condition was investigated. The modified code was validated from comparison with the theoretical result for a typical swirl injector. Clearly the simulated result shows the interesting characteristics of swirl injectors to provide either amplification or damping of the input disturbance through each component. These results give promise in applying the current model to nonlinear dynamic characteristics of swirl injectors.

  • The Korean Integrated Model (KIM) forecast system was extended to assimilate Horizontal Line-Of-Sight (HLOS) wind observations from the Atmospheric Laser Doppler Instrument (ALADIN) on board the Atmospheric Dynamic Mission (ADM)-Aeolus satellite. Quality control procedures were developed to assess the HLOS wind data quality, and observation operators added to the KIM three-dimensional variational data assimilation system to support the new observed variables. In a global cycling experiment, assimilation of ALADIN observations led to reductions in average root-mean-square error of 2.1% and 1.3% for the zonal and meridional wind analyses when compared against European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Integrated Forecast System (IFS) analyses. Even though the observable variable is wind, the assimilation of ALADIN observation had an overall positive impact on the analyses of other variables, such as temperature and specific humidity. As a result, the KIM 72-hour wind forecast fields were improved in the Southern Hemisphere poleward of 30 degrees.

  • An optimization model was developed for groundwater development and management in coastal areas. The optimization model consists of coastal groundwater flow model and optimization techniques. The objective of this work is to validate sharp-interface model which is one of major components of the optimization model. A laboratory experimental model is built to simulate freshwater lens, i.e., layer of freshwater floating on top of saltwater, phenomena. Experimental results for the position of fresh-saltwater sharp-interface and the salinity in well are compared with numerical results. Average ratio of relative error is estimated approximately between 2.91% and 4.39%. And the numerical results are in good agreement with the laboratory results of water quality in well in addition to the position of sharp-interface. Accordingly the evaluation of coastal groundwater flow using sharp-interface model can produce reasonable results.

  • In this study, numerical model for transport of radionuclide and colloid was developed. In order to solve reaction-migration governing equation for colloid and radionuclide, Strang-splitting Sequential Non-Iterative (SNI), which is one of Operator Splitting Method, was used for numerical method and this was coded by MATLAB. From the verification by comparing the simulation results with analytical solution considering only solute transport and rock diffusion, the Pearson's correlation coefficient was greater than 0.99 which demonstrates the accuracy of the model.

  • DEMs(digital elevation models) are generally used to automatically map the channel network and to delineate subbasins. At present, most DEM data are derived from three alternative sources which are ground survey, pphotogrammetric data capture and digitized cartographic data sources. The accuracy of a DEM is dependent on the spatial resolution, quality of the source data, collection and processing procedures, and digitizing systems. weather conditions and nature environment.etc provide us satellite image of the highest quality. However, Match in error of the auto generation DEM was severely affected by physical and environmental conditions at shooting time. This paper shows that real-time operation analysis of applied hydrology after extracting DEM Using a pair of Kompsat images.
