  • The objective of this research is to design a digital map database structure supporting video images which is one of the fundamental elements of hypermap. In order to reach the research objective, the work includes the identification of the relationships between two dimensional digital map database and video elements. The proposed database model has functions for interactive browsing between video image frames and specific points on two dimensional digital map, fer connecting the map elements and features on video images. After that, the images and the database are transformed to the pilot system fer testing the map database structure. The pilot project results indicate that the map database structure can integrate functionally two dimensional digital map and video images.

  • The digital map has been updated in every five years in the past. However, it has been changed to make corrections and updated in every two years for metropolitan region and every four years for other regions since year 2008. Although, the correctness and reliability were decreased and updating work is being delayed due to the updating work in a lump. The period update spends a lot of money because this method uses aerial photogrammetry, and the digital map has the time gap between periods. Therefore, this study provides information necessary for digital map produced by the government and develops digital map production system based on objects which can be updated frequently in order to save state and local government budgets that double investment are generated to update digital map. In order to analyze usefulness of the developed system, subject area was selected and errors of updated data were analyzed. As the result of analysis, checked 66 errors were corrected and saved in the database.

  • Korea Water Resources Corporation carried out LiDAR survey to construct detailed terrain data for flood mapping and it is expected that much money is required in flood mapping of all over the country. Therefore, it is desirable to use NGIS digital map to construct preliminary modelling data for selection of flood mapping area. And the analysis of DEM error with respect to scale of digital map is necessary for the sake of applying digital map as the input data of flood mapping. We compared DEM from digital map with DEM from LiDAR survey. Especially we analyzed DEM error characteristics that is occurred with respect to the interpolation method that is used to construct DEM from TIN of digital map. As a result of analysis, digital map(1:1,000) showed smaller error than digital map(1:5,000) and DEM applying linear interpolation showed smaller error than DEM applying quintic interpolation. Especially, variation of DEM error by cell resolution was evaluated as very slight because urban district was composed of gentle slope.

  • Though Digital Map Ver. 2.0 is adequate to GIS, the possibility to gain information from its external form and the ease of producing paper map had retrogressed. In this research, concerned with the problems, we plan to make Digital Map Ver. 2.0, which satisfies the conditions of GIS. It will have geometrical and logical data structure, and also possess informative ability as much as that of Ver. 1.0. For the study, the process to analyze the topographic code, color, code priority order, etc. of paper relief map, digital map Ver. 1.0, and digital map Ver. 2.0 was taken. For the topographical feature with diverse expression, we changed the portrayal of digital map Ver. 2.0 to make it fit the regulations of map portrayal. At the point of topographic code priority order, the rule is to arrange them in the same order as the real territory. However, we made a special code in the case of any change of the locational order. According to the property of this study, we observe the regulations of map portrayal, for the elements related to subjective sense, such as colors. And we give priority on the data construction when the portrayal of topographical feature and the schema of GIS database system are contradictory.

  • The KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT)-2 has a capability to provide a cross-track stereo imagery using two different orbits for generating various spatial information. However, in order to fully realize the potential of the KOMPSAT-2 stereo imagery in terms of mapping, various tests are necessary. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the possibility of mapping using the KOMPSAT-2 stereo imagery. For this, digital plotting was conducted based on the stereoscopic images. Also the Digital Elevation Model(DEM) and an ortho-image were generated using digital plotting results. An accuracy of digital plotting, DEM, and ortho-image were evaluated by comparing with the existing data. Consequently, we found that horizontal and vertical error of the modeling results based on the Rational Polynomial Coefficient(RPC) was less than 1.5 meters compared with the Global Positioning System(GPS) survey results. The maximum difference of vertical direction between the plotted results in this study and the existing digital map on the scale of 1/5,000 was more than 5 meters according as the topographical characteristics. Although there were some irregular parallax on the images, we realized that it was possible to interpret and plot at least seventy percent of the layer which was required the digital map on the scale of 1/5,000. Also an accuracy of DEM, which was generated based on the digital plotting, was compared with the existing LiDAR DEM. We found that the ortho-images, which were generated using the extracted DEM in this study, sufficiently satisfied with the requirement of the geometric accuracy for an ortho-image map on the scale of 1/5,000.

  • Forest road has been an essential infrastructure for various forestry practices as well as for recreational use, disaster management, and local economics promotion. Since 1980s, extensive network of forest roads has been constructed as an national project in Korea. However, due to the minimal-budget of the project, accurate maps of forest road are not usually available. Although forest road map is a main thematic layer for the forest Geographic Information System (FGIS), its locational accuracy has not been sufficient for the practical applications and, therefore, the update of digital forest road maps is urgent. The objectives of this study is to compare ae methodology of generating and updating digital forest road maps from the aspects of the map accuracy and the efficiency of methods. Four mapping methods (GPS surveying, satellite imagery, ortho aerial photograph, and digital photogrammetry) were applied to generate the forest road maps over the study area of Mt. Oseo in Chungchungnam-do, which has a 35km forest roads distributed in national, public and private forests. The forest road Imp produced by digital photogrammetric method is the most accurate and comparable to GPS surveying although it required the greatest amount of labor time.

  • As global warming and has caused the number of abnormal changes, much damage has occurred recently in Korean Peninsula from natural disaster. To prevent and cope with these annually repeated natural hazards, scientific analysis are needed in Disaster Management, including systematic management. In this study, As part of scientific disaster prevention measures, digital image based hazard map for solution to overcome the existing hazard map with schematic representation was constructed. which was combined digital image, digital map and hazard information, and than hazard information system was developed using the hazard map. The hazard information map and hazard information system are able to provide great service to the public and to support quick decision making for hazard management and analysis of natural hazard damage.
