Rapid Prototyping(RP) technologies provide the ability to fabricate initial prototypes from various model materials. Stratasys' Fused Deposition Modeling(FDM) is a typical RP process that can fabricate prototypes out of plastic materials, and the parts made from FDM were often used as load-carrying elements. Because FDM deposits materials in about 300$\mu$m thin filament with designated orientation, parts made from FDM show anisotropic material properties. In this paper an analytic model was proposed to predict the tensile strength of FDM parts. Applying the Classical Lamination Theory, which was developed for laminated composite materials, a computer code was implemented. Tsai-Wu failure criterion was added to the code to predict the failure of the FDM parts. The tensile strengths predicted by the analytic model were compared with experimental data. The data and prediction agreed reasonably well to prove the validity of the model. In addition, a web-based advisory service(FDMAS) was developed to provide strength prediction and design rules for FDM parts.
In the present study, a numerical simulation was conducted to estimate the prediction performance of FDS on the carbon monoxide production in the under-ventilated compartment fires. Methane and heptane fires located in the a 2/5 scale compartment based on the ISO-9705 standard room was simulated using FDS Ver. 5.5. Through the comparison between the computed results and the earlier published experimental data, the performance of FDS was estimated on the predictions of the combustion gases concentration in the hot upper layer of the compartment and the effects of CO yield rate on the estimation of CO production at local points were analyzed. From the results, it was known that FDS Ver. 5.5, in which the two-step reaction mixture fraction model implemented, was more effective on the prediction of CO concentration compared to the previous FDS version. In addition, controlling CO yield rate made the predicted CO concentration get closer to the experimental data for the fires of the under-ventilated condition.

An axisymmetric shell element which includes the effects of the meridional and circumferential cable prestresses is developed. The fluid-structure interaction is expressed as added mass effect which is in proportion to the acceleration of the structure in interface surface. The added mass is obtained by using finite element method under the assumption that the fluid is invicid, incompressible and irrotational. It is coded for personal computer by the maximum use of axisymmetic properties and the dynamic analysis are performed under seismic exitations. A ring element makes the characteristics of the axisymmetric shell to be fully utilized. The elgenvalue solutons under the initial prestresses and the internal fluid are well agreed with the exact solutions and references by using under 20 elements. The eigenvalues are decreased along the increasing the height of internal fluid and these effects are dominant under the lower wave numbers. The results of the seismic analysis show that the radial deflection under the meridional prestress is a little larger than that under the circumferential prestress.
Methane gas hydrate which is considered energy source for the next generation has an urgent need to develop reliable numerical simulator for coupled THM phenomena in the porous media, to minimize problems arising during the production and optimize production procedures. International collaborations to improve previous numerical codes are in progress, but they still have mismatch in the predicted value and unstable convergence. In this paper, FEM code for fully coupled THM phenomena is developed to analyze methane hydrate dissociation in the porous media. Coupled partial differential equations are derived from four mass balance equations (methane hydrate, soil, water, and hydrate gas), energy balance equation, and force equilibrium equation. Five main variables (displacement, gas saturation, fluid pressure, temperature, and hydrate saturation) are chosen to give higher numerical convergence through trial combinations of variables, and they can analyze the whole region of a phase change in hydrate bearing porous media. The kinetic model is used to predict dissociation of methane hydrate. Developed THM FEM code is applied to the comparative study on a Masuda's laboratory experiment for the hydrate production, and verified for the stability and convergence.

A series of 1/5 scale-down reactor flow distribution tests had been conducted to determine the hydraulic characteristics of an APR+ (Advanced Power Reactor Plus), which were used as the input data for an open core thermal margin analysis code. In this study, to examine the applicability of computational fluid dynamics with the porous model to the analysis of APR+ internal flow, simulations were conducted using the commercial multi-purpose computational fluid dynamics software ANSYS CFX V.14. It was concluded that the porous domain approach for some reactor internal structures could adequately predict the flow characteristics inside a reactor in a qualitative manner. If sufficient computational resources are available, the predicted core inlet flow distribution is expected to be more accurate by considering the real geometry of the internal structures, especially upstream of the core inlet.

In Mokpo coastal zone, the characteristics showing ebb-dominant tidal flow was confirmed by analysis of observed tide and tidal currents, Physical factors occurring ebb-dominant flow were reviewed. Influence of critical depth for drying, bottom shear stress, coastal reclamation, tidal amplitude, nonlinear tide, and eddy viscosity on the change of ebb-dominant flow was investigated by applying a two-dimensional circulation model. The simulation results for a variety of conditions showed that eddy viscosity and critical depth for drying does little or no impact on the generation of asymmetric flow. Strong bottom friction stress makes ebb-dominant flow clearly. Change of tidal flat into land swells ebb- dominant flow, and change of tidal flat into sea disappears ebb-dominant flow. Nonlinear tides play a decisive role in the generation of asymmetrical tidal flow. Non-linear tides should be included in the open boundary conditions of hydrodynamic modeling in the Mokpo coastal zone.

Demands for semiconductor devices are dramatically increasing, and advancements in fabrication technology are allowing a step-up in the number of devices per unit area. As a result, semiconductor devices require higher heat dissipation, and thus, cooling solutions have become important for guaranteeing their operational reliability. In particular, in chip-in-board packages, in which chips and passives are embedded in the substrates for efficient device layout, heat dissipation is of greater importance. In this study, a thermal model for layers of different materials has been proposed, and then, the heat transfer has been simulated by imposing a set of appropriate boundary conditions. Heat generation can be predicted based on the results, which will be utilized as practical data for actual package design.

In order to accumulate fundamental. data for control of fishes’ behavior at the real fishing ground, the fitness of the numerical model for describing the behavior of fishes was examined by the marine fish. Mullet, Mugil cephalus were used as experimental fishes. The numerical model of fishes’ behavior presented in our earlier paper was modified on the vertical movement of fish school. For the comparision of parameters of the modified numerical model between mullet and rainbow trout, the estimated values of parameters were identified with dimension. The fitness of the modified numerical model was examined by the comparision between experiment and simulation on the several indexes represented by fishes’ swimming characteristics. The obtained result are summarized a follows : 1. The non-dimensional parameter a’ of propulsive force and kb’ of interactive force by the experiment without model net showed a similarity, but the non-dimensional parameter k sub(c’) of schooling force for rainbow trout was lager than one for mullet and the non-dimensional parameter k sub(w’) of repulsive force for mullet was lager than one for rainbow trout. 2. The non-dimensional parameter a’ and k sub(b’) for rainbow trout by the experiment with model net were a little lager than ones for mullet, but non-dimensional parameter k sub(c’) and k sub(w’) for mullet were lager than ones for rainbow trout. 3. The non-dimensional parameter k sub(c’) and k sub(b’) showed the largest and the smallest value among the non-dimensional parameters for rainbow trout and mullet, respectively. 4. The fitness of the modified numerical model was confirmed by means of the compulsion between experiment and simulation on the swimming trajectory of fishes, the mean distance of individual from wall, the mean swimming speed, the mean swimming depth and the mean distance between the nearest individuals. Especially, the similarity of mean swimming depth was improved by using the modified numerical model.
We propose a waveform inversion method for SH-wave data obtained in a shallow seismic refraction survey, to determine a 2D inhomogeneous S-wave profile of shallow soils. In this method, a 2.5D equation is used to simulate SH-wave propagation in 2D media. The equation is solved with the staggered grid finite-difference approximation to the 4th-order in space and 2nd-order in time, to compute a synthetic wave. The misfit, defined using differences between calculated and observed waveforms, is minimised with a hybrid heuristic search method. We parameterise a 2D subsurface structural model with blocks with different depth boundaries, and S-wave velocities in each block. Numerical experiments were conducted using synthetic SH-wave data with white noise for a model having a blind layer and irregular interfaces. We could reconstruct a structure including a blind layer with reasonable computation time from surface seismic refraction data.
To calculate the position and velocity of the artificial satellite precisely, one has to build a mathematical model concerning the perturbations by understanding and analysing the space environment correctly and then quantifying. Due to these space environment model, the total acceleration of the artificial satellite can be expressed as the 2nd order differential equation and we build an orbit propagation algorithm by integrating twice this equation by using the Cowell's method which gives the position and velocity of the artificial satellite at any given time. Perturbations important for the orbits of geostationary spacecraft are the Earth's gravitational potential, the gravitational influences of the sun and moon, and the solar radiation pressure. For precise orbit propagation in Cowell' method, 40 x 40 spherical harmonic coefficients can be applied and the JPL DE403 ephemeris files were used to generate the range from earth to sun and moon and 8th order Runge-Kutta single step method with variable step-size control is used to integrate the the orbit propagation equations.
