  • The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the control performance of a coulomb friction damper(CFD) for controlling the inelastic behavior of seismically excited structures, The seismic performances of various buildings are evaluated using capacity spectrum method(CSM), and the additional dampings are calculated If the evaluated performance levels of the buildings are below the target level. Maximum friction force of the CFD to achieve additional damping is provided using the concept of equivalent viscous damping, Numerical simulations for single degree of freedom(SDOF) systems with various structural periods and post yield stiffness ratios demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.

  • A theoretical study of the forced vibration response of a cantilevered beam with non-linear dry friction damping is analyzed by various slip displacements and force levels for the position coordinates of spring-mass-damper and external exciting force. A component mode analysis is carried out based on the constraint conditions and Lagrange multipliers to treat physical systems with non-linear damping. The analysis has shown that the basic phenomena observed for a simply supported beam with a dry friction damper attached are also observed for cantilevered beam.

  • In this study, wave transformation by damping due to the permeable bed of finite depth is investigated. The relationship between wave damping rate and relative water depth are presented. The damping rate is used in the eigenfunction expansion method to calculate the wave dissipation over the permeable bed. For a permeable shoal, the eigenfunction expansion model result is compared with that of the integral equation method to show good agreement. The model is also used to examine the wave reflection over the permeable planar slope of various frequency. It has been found that in general relatively short waves are more influenced by the permeability of the permeable seabed than relatively long waves unless the water depth is so large that the influence of permeable bed on surface water waves disappears.

  • Wave characteristics in the presence of energy damping are investigated using the linear shallow water equations. To get the phase and energy velocities, geometric optics approach is used and then these values are validated through numerical experiments. Energy damping affects wave height, phase and energy velocities which result in wave transformation. When the complex wavenumber is used by the Eulerian approach, it is found that the phase velocity decreases as the damping increases while the energy velocity increases showing higher values than the phase velocity. When the complex angular frequency is used by the Lagrangian approach, the energy-damping wave group is found to propagate in the energy velocity. The energy velocity is found to affect shoaling and refraction coefficient which is verified through numerical experiments for waves on a plane slope.

  • In this paper, a method for reducing seismic responses of adjacent buildings is studied that involves connecting two buildings with energy-dissipating devices, such as MR dampers. For the vibration control of the adjacent buildings, a fuzzy control technique with semi-active MR dampers is proposed. A fuzzy controller, which can appropriately modulate the damping forces by controlling the input voltage in real time, is designed according to the proposed method. To verify the validity of the proposed method, numerical simulations are performed. In the numerical simulations, historical earthquake records with diverse frequency contents and different peak values are used. For the purpose of comparison, an uncontrolled system, a passive control system and a semi-active fuzzy control system are considered. The comparative results prove the effectiveness of the proposed control technique, i.e. the numerical results show that the fuzzy controlled semi-active MR dampers can effectively reduce the earthquake responses of the adjacent structures.

  • A linear acoustic analysis is performed to explore the characteristics of acoustic damping by a gas-liquid scheme coaxial injector in a liquid rocket engine. The injector can play a role of acoustic resonator. Acoustic-damping characteristics of half-wave resonator are compared with those of quarter-wave resonator. Various effects of the boundary absorption coefficient, injector length and sound speed in combustion chamber and resonator are investigated. As a result, short tuning length of resonator and low sound speed of the medium have a favorable effect on acoustic damping. As the boundary absorption coefficient decreases, the tuning range of the resonator length becomes narrower.

  • Nonlinear acoustic damping of a half-wave acoustic resonator in a combustion chamber is investigated numerically. First, in a baseline chamber without any resonators, acoustic behavior is investigated over the wide range of acoustic amplitude from 80 dB to 150 dB. Decay rate increases nonlinearly with acoustic amplitude and nonlinearity becomes appreciable at acoustic amplitude above 125 dB. Next, damping effect of a half-wave resonator is investigated. Nonlinear acoustic excitation does not affect optimum tuning condition of the resonator, which is derived from linear acoustics. A half-wave resonator is effective even for acoustic damping of high-amplitude pressure oscillation, but its function of acoustic damper is relatively weakened compared with the case of linear acoustic excitation.

  • The method that determines the appropriate damping factor is studied for a lens design. When suitable damping factor is applied to the additive damped least-squares (DLS) method, the convergence and the stability of the optimization process are examined in a triplet-type photographic lens design. We calculate eigenvalues of the product of the Jacobian matrix of error functions by using the singular value decomposition (SVD) method. We adopt the median of eigenvalues as an appropriate damping factor. The convergence and the stability of the optimization process are improved by choosing the adequate damping factor for the optimization of a photographic lens. It is known that the numerical inaccuracy in the calculation of normal equation is overcome by using the orthogonal transformations of the Jacobian matrix. Therefore, a combination of the method for setting a proper damping factor and the orthogonal transformations of the Jacobian matrix is good for application to the design of an aspheric lens with high-order terms. terms.

  • This paper summarizes an experimental and analytical study on the application of viscoelastic dampers as energy dissipation devices in structural applications. Shaking table tests are carried out on the viscoelastically damped structure and the obtained structural responses are compared to those of the inelastic analysis results for the same test structure with no dampers added. It can be concluded the viscoelastic dampers are effective in reducing excessive vibrations of structures under strong earthquake ground motions. It is also observed that the increase in structure's stiffness by the addition of dampers can not contribute to improving the seismic response of a structure. In general. the reduction of the seismic response by adding the dampers to the structure is mostly resulted from the increased damping effect. It is found that the modal strain energy method can be used to reliably predict the equivalent structural damping. and the seismic response of a viscoelastically damped structure can be accurately estimated by conventional modal analysis techniques.
