  • Electrical soundings were conducted in and around the Nanjido waste landfill in August, 1994 and February, 1995. Schlumberger array was adopted and 37 and 22 soundings were performed around and in the Nanjido landfill, respectively. Besides, self potentials were measured at 50 points, in front of the right Nanjido landfill. Interpretations of the sounding data show low resistivity zones of about 10 Ω-m at depth ranging from 10 to 80 m from the surface in front of the landfill and of about 6 Ω-m at depth ranging from 37 m to 130 m in the landfill. It appears that these low resistivity zones are contaminated by or saturated with leachate, and their depths are deeper than those of boring data by 20∼30 m. These results indicate the possibility of contamination of weathered zone and the upper part of the bed rock in these areas. But sounding data obtained at the back of the landfill reveal more resistive and thinner low resistivity zones than those in and in front of the landfill. Thus it is concluded that the degree of contamination by leachate in and in front of the landfill is greater than that at the back of the landfill.

  • To clarify the geological structure of Yangsan fault around Sangchon-ri in the southern part of Kyungsang Basin the resistivity (dipole-dipole profiling) and VLF surveys carried out on the four profiles, crossing the inferred trace of the fault. The resistivity contrast across the fault is clearly shown on the profiles: higher resistivity and lower resistivity on the east and west, respectively. It is most likely from the uplift of the granitic bedrock on the east park due to the strike-fault raulting with vertical movement. The zero-crossing points of VLF anomalies, associated with near-surface fracture zone, are found to well correlate with the resistivity boundaries from the dipole-dipole profiling. Consequently, southern segment of Yangsan fault (at Sangchon-ri area) is interpreted to be vertically developed strike-slip fault with a difference more than 10m depth of basement rock at both sides.

  • A small-loop electromagnetic (EM) system using multiple frequencies has advantages in survey speed and cost despite of limitation on its depth of investigation. Therefore, small-loop EM surveys have been frequently used on various site investigations involving engineering and environmental problems. We have developed a subsurface imaging technique using small loop EM data. We used a one-dimensional (ID) inversion method to reconstruct a subsurface image from frequency EM sounding data. Tests using simulated data show that the method can reasonably recover the subsurface resistivity structure. Also, the method was tested on field data obtained with multiple frequency small loop EM system at a farm in Chunchon, Korea. The resistivity image obtained form field data compares favorably with the image from the dipole-dipole resistivity survey.

  • In order to obtain the geological information of the shallow subsurface and the characteristics of resistivity curves to the lateral extent of the gold bearing gravel layer underlaid by a thick layer, electrical resistivity surveys had been carried out in the northern area of Takaoi village, Kalimantan, Indonesia from September 30th to October 27th in 1999. The Dipole-Dipole (Dp-Dp) resistivity survey was carried out with a electrode spacing of A=3m, 5m and electrode separation index n=10, and the vertical electrical sounding (VES) of the Schlumberger type was performed at 6 sites. The interpretation of the Dp-Dp data and VES curves by computer modeling indicates 5 classified layers as the horizontal structure. And the characteristics of VES curves shows us KH type.

  • Five electrical resistivity dipole-dipole and two seismic reflection surveys were performed in the southeastern margin of the Yongdong basin to delineate the shallow basin architecture. To investigate the intra-basin structure, twenty four resistivity sounding points and three dipole-dipole lines were selected especially in the vicinity of volcanic masses. The basin-fault boundaries are identified in electrical dipole-dipole resistivity section as high resistivity-contrast of approximately $1,500\;{\Omega}{\cdot}m$, characterized as a band of high standard-deviation. They are also effectively clarified in the seismic reflection data: amplitude and continuity contrasts in the common shot gather, first-arrival profiles, complex attribute plots. The intra-basin resistivity structures are constructed by interpolating vertical electrical sounding data and dipole-dipole profiles. The high-resistivity anomalies most likely originate from the northsouth-trending and northeast-dipping volcanic masses, which are to be further quantitatively investigated with geomagnetic and magnetotelluric surveys.

  • Geophysical survey techniques, such as electromagnetic(EM), GPR, and electrical method, have been tested in the landfill area to evaluate the applicability of these methods to soil contamination measurement. The EM method has proven to be excellent on mapping the areal distribution of contaminants and the migration path for leachate. Since the field operation of EM technique is simple as well as fast, we think the EM method must be the first choice for these purposes. Electrical survey techniques have proven to be very effective on mapping sectional distribution of contaminants. Generally, the GPR method is very good on high resolution survey of shallow depth, and field data acquisition is simple, too. But the resistivity method gives better information on deep area, for example, deeper than the depth of 20 m.

  • The primary objective of this study is to develope an investigating method to identify spatial variability of plumes and contaminants at contaminated sites. The electrical resistivity method was used to characterize contaminated sites. This technique is expected to use actively at contaminated sites in order to remedy the contaminated sites in the future. It was studied by appling electrical resistivity method into contaminated wastes disposal sites and verified that it was suitable method for the contaminated site characterization.

  • We have applied the geophysical survey, mainly electric and electromagnetic (EM) methods, to a test site contaminated by hydrocarbon waste disposal and local spill. The multi-frequency, moving source & receiver EM survey along with ground penetrating radar (GPR) showed a fairly good performance in detection of buried metal pipes and objects. Magnetic survey measuring vertical and horizontal gradients were so sensitive to the small metallic objects spread over the surface that it's hard to discriminate the buried pipe. We chose electrical resistivity, EM and GPR survey to examine the soil contamination. Depth slices of resistivity distribution as the results of the inversion of resistivity and EM data coincided each other and closely matched the contaminated area determined by chemical analysis of the soil samples. GPR images did not show the reflection events related with contamination plume since there are no distinct spill in this site. We inferred the contamination using the penetration depth of the GPR energy, which could be used as auxiliary information to the resistivity and EM results. We summarized the applicability of each survey methods based on this results and proposed a desirable survey scheme for the determination of hydrocarbon contaminated site.
