  • Most of waste sludge has generally been disposed in landfill site or dumped in the ocean, which will be banned by the content of its heavy metals according to London Dumping Convention in Korea. Therefore, environmentally friend methods are urgently required for the treatment and disposal of the sewage sludge. Thermal hydrolysis is one of the good treatment methods to solve the sludge problems. In this study, the physical and environmental testing was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of by-product cake from the thermal hydrolysis as liner or cover materials in landfill.

  • Inha Rocket Research Institute has made the igniter that is combination of black powder and PVA polymer for ignition small rocket. But recent igniter is not satisfy because of the performance of igniter is not identified. So, we confirmed requirement of igniter by comparing of ratio of black powder and PVA through experimental method. Especially we studied with ignition temperature for propellant and stable combustion pressure that is requirements of propellant. We can know the tendency of combustion properties by ratio of oxidizer and combustion catalyst through changing of temperature and pressure of exhaust gas of igniter.

  • Mechanical properties of PVC[poly(vinylchloride)] composites containing the dust from blast and converter (Kwangyang Iron Co.) were investigated as a function of dust content. Tensile strength is increased, when the blast dust is mixed with PVC to the extent of 8.83wt % and impact strength is not significantly changed. From these results, it is suggested that blast dust containing CaO, SiO, MgO, $A1_2O_3$ and metallugical particle is compatible with PVC. Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) showed that residual weight(%) at temperature $600^{\circ}C$ increased with the amount of blast dust and differential scanning calorimetry(DCS) showed that the thermal stability of PVC composite was increased when the weight ratio of blast dust was 8.83wt % X-ray diffractometry measurement also showed their blends and structures.

Effect of Flame Resistant Treatment on The Sound Absorption Capability of Sawdust-mandarin Peel Composite Particleboard (방염처리가 톱밥-귤박 혼합파티클보드의 흡음성능에 미치는 영향)

  • Sound absorption capability of the flame resistant treated sawdust-mandarin peel composite particleboard was were estimated by two microphone transfer function methods. The weight of flame resistant treated board slightly increased by the treatment. The treatment improved fire retardant performance by decreasing the charred area of flame resistant treated board. Sound absorption capabilities of flame resistant treated sawdust-mandarin peel composite particleboard, in the entire estimated frequency range of 500-6,400 Hz was slightly lower than those of the control specimen. Sound absorption capability of both the control and flame resistant treated sawdust-mandarin peel composite particleboards were higher than that of commercial gypsum boards, being widely used as a sound absorber for ceiling at the estimated frequency.

Selective Adsorption Properties of Nitrate ion in Sulfate and Nitrate Solution by Bead and Fibrous Hybrid Ion Exchange Bed (비드와 섬유 혼성이온교환 베드를 이용한 황산이온과 질산이온 혼합용액에서 질산이온의 선택 흡착 특성)

  • In this study, we have investigated the adsorption properties for nitrate ion in ground water using mixed resin type hybrid ion exchange (HIXF) and fiber type ion exchanger. Their swelling ratio (4.45 g/g) and ion exchange capacities (2.45 meq/g) were higer than the swelling ratio of IEC and IXF. Adsorption yield increased for nitrate $NO_3^-$ and sulfate $SO_4^{2-}$ ions were optimal at the concentration ratios of nitrate and sulfate below 1.0 and the adsorption yields were 100% and 20%, respectively. On the other hand it was shown that the degree of adsorpted for nitrate to pH 3, but it was little changed in the other pH range. We found that the selective adsorption capacity for nitrate was the optimal the mixing ratios of resin and fibrous ion exchanger of below 0.5.

  • Destructive methods are used for the turnup determination of an irradiated PWR fuel. One of the methods includes U, Pu, Nd-148 and Nd-(145+146) determination by an isotope dilution mass spectrometry using triple spikes (U-233, Pu-242 and Nd-150). The method involves two sequential ion exchange resin separation procedures. Pu is eluted from the first anion exchange resin column (Dowex AG 1$\times$8) with 12 M HCl-0.1 M HI mixed solution, followed by U elution with 0.1 M HCl. Nd is isolated from other fission products on the second anion exchange resin column (Dowex AG 1$\times$4) with a nitric acid-methanol eluent. Each fraction is analysed by thermal ionization mass spectrometry. The difference between Nd-148 and Nd-(145+146) method is found with an average 2.07%. The results are compared with those by the heavy element method using U and Pu isotopes and by the destructive y-spectrometric measurement of Cs-137. The dependences of isotope composition of U and Pu on burn-up, and correlation between those isotopes are illustrated graphically.

  • The good dispersion of nano-materials in epoxy matrix was important parameter for the reinforcement effect, and the evaluation of dispersion degree was to prove it. This work was studied to predict the dispersion condition of nano-SiC powders in SiC/epoxy composites using capacitance measurement. Capacitance was defined to be the electric capacity in proportional to electron charge of the measuring section. In case of nano-SiC powders, the electron charge of SiC/epoxy composites was higher than that of neat epoxy resin. Capacitance was evaluated for each section of SiC/epoxy composites. The prediction of dispersion condition was verified by using capacitance measurement. Dispersion condition of nano-SiC powders in epoxy matrix was evaluated with two different dispersion methods, i.e., sonication and stirring methods. The dispersion degree was also verified with the tensile strength correlating to capacitance.

  • The damaged ceramics were repaired and restored thru various methods with various materials. The history of Ceramic repair and restoration has developed widening its areas from traditional stage utilizing applicable living material to the specified field that introduces new materials, new process methods and material analysis. Through investigations over the documents, artifacts and analysis, the period could be divided into natural material period in which uses the bonds extracted from the animals, plants and lime (prehistoric to Japanese domination period), Semi-artificial period in which mix natural material and synthetic resins such as "Jusabi"(Japanese domination period to 1970s.) and complete synthetic resin period in which introduces new materials and process methods in accordance with preservation standard (after 1980s).

  • A determination method of trace nickel and cobalt in water samples was studied and developed by adsorbing their complexes on ion exchange resin suspension. The analytical ions were formed as complexes with a ligand of APDC (ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate) and adsorbed on anion exchange resin of Dowex 2-X8. After the suspension was filtered out with membrane filter, the complexes were dissolved in HCl solution by an ultrasonic vibrator for ET-AAS determination. Several conditions were optimized as followings. pH of sample solution: 5.0, amount of ligand APDC: more than 430 times in mole ratio, the type and concentration of acid: 0.1 M HCl, and vibration time: 7 minutes. The addition of palladium in the HCl solution could improve the reproducibility and sensitivity by a matrix modification in the absorbance measurement. This procedure was applied for the analysis of three kinds of real water samples. The detection limits equivalent to 3 times standard deviation of blank were Co 0.36 ng/mL and Ni 0.27 ng/mL and recoveries in spiked samples were 99-102% for cobalt and 100-105% for nickel.

Geochemical Experiment for Effective Treatment of Abandoned Mine Wastes (광산폐석의 효과적 처리를 위한 지화학적 연구)

  • The geochemical experiments were carried out to investigate a removal effect of heavy metals in abdndoned metallic mine wastes, and to conceive a treatment techniques of them. In order to prevent contamination, experiment appature was made of acrylic acid resin and polyethylene which resist to acid and alkali. Experiment models are devided into four groups based on the system environments, distribution patterns and a kind of filling materials. The first group is background model(model I ) which is filled with waste only and opened to air. The second one is four layer group which is subdivided into two models, opened and closed systems, and the third mix group which is subdivided into three models based on mixing ratio of filling materials and system environment like a layered group. The forth is composed of two layer model, lower one composed of waste and upper one limestone chips. Solution drained from Model Ishows a high contents of heavy metals on the all terms of experiments. Among the models, however, the closed mix model V and Ⅶ show the most effective removal of heavy metals liberated from wastes. Models having different mixing ratios of filling materials on closed systems does not affect in heavy metal removal effect. But, the distribution patterns of filling materials affect very much on removal effect of heavy metals. The closed models with same constitution ratios and distribution patterns of filling materials show more and less effective removal to the open models.
