  • Underwater wireless communication systems can be useful for underwater environment observation, catastrophe prevention, ocean resources exploration, ocean organism research, vessel sinking exploration, and so on. However, unlike terrestrial wireless communication, underwater wireless communication should consider factors such as long propagation delay, limited transmission capacity, high bit-error rate due to potential loss in power, ambient noise, man-made noise, multi-path, etc., because of the inherent characteristics of water. Thus, in this paper, we propose a suitable media access control(MAC) protocol that applies a combination of the ALOHA MAC protocol and the CSMA/CA MAC protocol to underwater environment. We further propose a mathematical analysis model to evaluate performance. We also verify performance improvement in the proposed scheme in comparison with existing MAC protocols.

  • Despite a series of various developments in underwater acoustic sensor networks, there are still occasions of loss of connection over the network. Because sufficient amounts of drawbacks causing disconnections posed particularly in the middle of connection over the network emerge in the ocean environment, there is a need of new testing mechanism for underwater acoustic networks. In this paper, we proposed to investigate the most vital parts of the network deployment whether they function well in order, without any failure so as to identify where exactly communication process problems and failures are. We introduce step-wised out-test mechanism for UWASNS and accomplished the mechanism by implementing experiments and rigorously checked all the underwater devices utilizing out-test function. Experimental results and out-test function are evinced by implementing, in order to explain our system and conclude with possible future improvements.

  • The author has examined how sea-bass, Epinephelus septemfasciatus respond to surface attracting lamps line and underwater attracting lamps line in the experimental water tank (550L$\times$58W$\times$73H cm). The attracting rate was investigated in accordance with the intervals of lighting and putting out hour (1, 5 minute) when each of the attracting lamps was gradually switched off after they were switched on all at once. The results are as follows: 1. Distribution of fish at the illuminated section; (1). The fish was more distributed in the section adjacent to the extinguished section. (2). Difference of distribution between section and section and section was greater at surface attracting lamps as compared with underwater attracting lamps. (3). Surface attracting lamps was more distributed than underwater attracting lamps at intervals of 5 minutes. 2. Attracting rate of the last section; (1). The rate was showed increasing as illuminating time elapse and became L type. (2). Attracting rate in underwater attracting lamps was higher than surface attracting lamps at intervals of 1 minutes and lower than surface attracting lamps at intervals of 5 minuets.

  • A Held experiment was carried out to confirm the effect of underwater sound on the luring of fish school of rudder fish in a set net at the coast of Cheju Island. The effects of the acoustic emission on the luring of fish school were observed at a cage around a set net fishing ground using a manufactured underwater speaker. Underwater sounds that were emitted for the luring of fish school were the pure sounds of which frequency were 300Hz and 400Hz, engine noise and swimming sound. The results of the observation are as follows : 1. The input and output wave forms of a manufactured underwater speaker in water tank were similar to those in measurement frequencies. The result of the observation indicated that it could be used for the purpose of the sound emission in measurement frequencies. 2. The effect of the emitted pure sound of 300Hz, 400Hz was remarkable for the luring of fish school in 2 minutes after the sound emission. The reaction of fish school was more sensitive to the pure sound of 400Hz than 300Hz. 3. The effect of the emitted engine noise was more remarkable than that of the pure sound for 3 minute continuously. On the feeding sound, fish formed a shoal and swimmed, but didn't gather around the underwater speaker. 4. The feeding and swimming sound spectra on rudder Hsh showed similar sound pressure distribution each other, they appeared low sound pressure in frequencies of 200-600Hz.

  • Underwater Wireless Communication System can be useful for research of quality of water, ocean resources exploration, analysis ocean environment and so on. However, there exist security threats including data loss, data forgery, and another variety of security threats, because of characteristics of water, various geographical factors, intended attack, etc. To solve these problem, in this paper, we propose a CCM-UW mode of operation modified form of CCM mode of operation, providing data confidentiality, integrity, origin authentication and anti-attack prevent, for the Underwater Wireless Communication System. By implementing CCM-UW in MACA protocol(Underwater Wireless Communication MAC Protocol) and measuring speed of communication, we confirm the applicability of the security and analyze the communication environment impact.

  • Particulates in drinking water distribution system (DWDS) are mostly influenced by internal corrosion of metal pipes and sediment in pipelines due to the solution of this effect is limited. The particle size, component and properties of compounds for particulates in distributed water are different and the difference of these characteristics will be occurred by the kind of facilities, pipe condition, external factors and supply system etc. In this study, conducting the investigation of water quality in DWDS researches with particulates in the water. Monitoring sites were each water supply reservoir and the end of water supply area in DWDS. To collect particulate material at each sampling site, $47{\phi}$ glass microfiber filter type GF/C was performed using a filtration. Substances that the effect of the turbidity in the water according to particulate suspended solids and inorganic materials is due to the increasing particulates in the end of DWDS were increased. The result of compounds analysis by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) were Goethite (${\alpha}$-FeOOH), Magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$) in the end of DWDS and Quartz ($SiO_2$), Yeelimite ($Ca_4Al_6O_{12}SO_4$) at the effluent of waterworks and reservoirs. There were differences the compounds and sediments in the releasing or remaining water distribution facilities.

  • In this paper, we perform a study on the directionality of broadband ship radiation noise, mainly resulting from propeller cavitation. By examining a few foreign studies for ship radiation noise and domestic data measured in Korean waters, it is reconfirmed that the asymmetric directionality of the ship radiation noise at bow and stern aspect is observed commonly. In order to explore the reason of this asymmetric directionality, a numerical analysis, based on the acoustic boundary element method, is applied into the geometric form equal to the commercial ship used in the domestic experiment. The numerical result demonstrates that the diffraction of the propeller cavitation noise by ship is a primary cause of the bow-stern asymmetry in the directionality of ship radiation noise.

  • When a moving piezoelectric transducer detects an object in water, its receiving sensitivity is attenuated by Doppler effect. In this paper, a method for compensating the effect is suggested by using a newly designed condenser of which capacitance is varied according to the moving speed of the transducer. Using the method, the receiving resonant frequency of the transducer can be changed automatically. As a result, there is good agreement between the results of experiment and those of calculation. It is confirmed that the response sensitivity degradation of transducers due to Doppler effect can be compensated in the range of $1{\sim}10^m/_s$ moving speed.

  • The phototaxis of common carp Cyprinus carpio was studied tinder laboratory conditions to find out distributional pattern of the fish under light gradient and to find the light intensity which causes the maximum gathering rate. The optimum light intensities were determined, The fish tended to escape from tile light source when the light intensity was stronger or weaker than a certain optimum value. The mean illumination intensity which caused the maximum gathering rate was 3.813lux (2.99-4.76 lux) in the daytime and 6.292 lux (5.0-7.89 lux) at night. The gathering rate of the fish could be divided into two types: reflex gathering rate and equilibrium gathering rate. The reflex gathering rate appeared quickly soon after lighting and gradually changed as time elapsed, while the equilibrium gathering rate was almost always constant.
