  • In recent years, Project Management Consultant(PMC) project has been emerging as a high-value-added engineering project. However, domestic engineering firms have difficulties in entering the overseas PMC market because of poor project performance and lack of PMC capabilities. To overcome these limitations, this study analyzes the key competitiveness factors for successfully performing the global PMC projects. PMC competency factors based on Porter's double diamond theory were extracted, and a questionnaire survey was conducted on domestic and overseas engineering firms. In addition, the important PMC competency factors were derived through paired t-test and IPA matrix analysis. As a result, the PMC competitiveness of domestic engineering firms was analyzed as around 60% compared to that of global engineering firms. Furthermore, 'PMC track records' and 'project management/owner response skills' were identified as top priority competency factors which are the most necessary factors for present domestic engineering firms. This study is expected to support to establish the international PMC market entry strategies by providing priorities of key competitiveness factors.

To enhance the competitiveness continuously through efficiency in this business environments, construction companies need to make efforts to measure and accumulate performance data based on the strategic factors. When analysing performance of construction projects, the unique characteristics of each project should be considered properly, by which the managers can identify current status of project in various perspectives. This study proposes the performance analysis system using the concepts of balanced scorecard and data warehouse technology. The suggested system provides the management with the flexibility in analyzing performance data by applying the pre-defined key performance indicators and the function of multi-dimensional analysis.

  • Recently, the Contracts of International Construction Business has been decreased from the beginning of 2015 in Korea, although it has been steadily increased until 2014. This trend could be caused by Low-Price Contracts, the lack of Know-how and experience in operating, the poor management of Claims and Low-Profitability in Business. It has been recognized that the qualitative improvement of Business Contacts are necessary for successful Projects. In the Bidding Process, therefore, Experience data as In-House Data and Lessons Learned for projects should be strategically involved to assure riskless offers. Accordingly the Proposal Process are needed to be organized and enhanced by including processes for risks review about technical, marketing and commercial part during the bidding. This paper proposes a Risk Management Process model during Bidding Phase, using Risk Evaluation Method through the project life-cycle. The Concept of Model is to define CSF (Critical Success Factor) in the bidding process and Risk Factors are linked to CSF and Organization based on RAM (Responsibility assignment matrix).

  • Recently, overseas plant orders of domestic enterprises are steadily increased, and the amount of orders in the first half of 2014 were 93% increased compared to the previous year. In addition, now which is the third quarter of 2015, overseas plant orders are already over 249.8 billion dollars so the interests of plant industry research has been increased. In the life cycle of the plant project, CM before the construction stage is to complement the uncertainties that are inherent in the early stages of the project, and from the viewpoint of supporting the rational decision-making, the importance of its role is on the rise. Among them, excavating and investing participation plan in the planning stage is an important work that has a large impact force to influence the success and failure of future project. However, the work has become a problem with frequent consultations due to decision-making, continuous modification, and inefficient repetitive tasks. Therefore, it is needed that work process should be changed to effectively accommodate. The purpose of this paper is to derive the major work items for excavating and investing participation plan in the planning stage of the plant project, and establish a standardized work process through the Delphi analysis. The result of this study is expected to be utilized for EPC companies in ensuring the technical competitiveness in planning on overseas markets, and improve the efficiency of work.

  • This study derived big issues in overseas construction through big data analysis. To derive big issues in overseas construction, candidate groups of big issues were identified through big data analysis targeting 53,759 issues including 39,436 issues from major portal sites, 10,387 issues from daily newspapers, and 336 issues in construction magazines from Oct. 1, 2016 to Sep. 30, 2017. The main results are as follows: First, the main issues of overseas construction for the past one year showed that markets were concentrated in Middle East Asia and most of them were low-price order plant projects, which revealed the limitations. Although orders of overseas construction were slightly upward in the first half of 2017 compared to previous year, overseas construction orders are still unstable due to uncertainties in the international affairs and drops in oil prices. Second, the interest topics based on the 8th core keywords of overseas construction among the overseas construction issues for the past one year showed that region (29.9%), corporation environment (22.0%), profitability (17.0%), organizations (15.1%), projects (5.2%), market environment (3.6%), policy and system (3.6%), and education (3.5%) in the order of interest. Third, 10 core issues that have expandability and persistence of discourse were extracted out of 30 issue candidates with regard to eight keywords. Based on the extracted issues, detailed analysis on each of the core issues in overseas construction and correlation analysis between 10 core issues were conducted.

  • Architectural firms that would like to adopt the BIM are currently in an unfavorable position because of reduced orders, polarization of orders, and low price design. This study was conducted to evaluate plausible methods for supporting introduction of BIM into small sized firms. Before suggesting plans for support, we analyzed support projects and laws relating to support for small sized firms, after which we conducted a survey of small sized firms that support the project. The survey was completed by 242 architects and consisted of questions regarding the following aspects: current status and problems associated with BIM utilization, preference of certain policies for BIM introduction support, and reasonable level of support. After the survey, it was concluded that architectural firms are willing to use BIM and agree with the need for financial support for BIM program purchase and education, as well as to support BIM experts and fund low interest loans. In conclusion, it is proposed that support plans for small sized architectural firms in the areas of BIM introduction consulting, financial funding for the introductory process, provision of education and experts, order support, and promotions for accomplishment be provided.

  • Korean construction companies have maintained stable market share based on high technology and cost competitiveness although international construction market has been stalled due to increasing global economy uncertainties. However, Korean construction companies have relied heavily on the general types of projects in Middle East and Asia although the portion of different types of projects such as Build-Transfer-Operate (BTO), Build-Transfer-Lease (BTL), and Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) has been increasing in the market. When delivering huge projects requiring contractors deal with activities from project planning to operation, securing finance sources and profitability is deemed critical. Therefore, Korean construction companies need more attentions on the construction market supported by Multilateral Development Banks. However, Korean construction companies have not utilized effective strategies for the market entry and also government supportive policies are not useful enough to help construction companies. This study aims both to analyze the contract structure of Korean construction companies for presenting critical factors that need to be prepared and to suggest various methods that can be applied to support construction companies that have much interest in the Multilateral Development Banks. According to the results of study, it is important that Korean government provide structural information system, make a specialized organization, prevent over-heating among Korean construction companies, and collaborate with Official Development Agency. In addition, it appeared that the fairness and financial stability of project have recognized main advantages of the Multilateral Development Banks.

  • The Recent Specialty Contractor in construction of the reduced quantity due to the recession, but competitive in order to increase the number of companies that are increasingly competitive. The field work of one person to perform the work of employees and multiple sites, workforce supply flow that occurs at each stage of information transfer is not made a late staffing. Therefore this research has proposed a new alternative that can overcome them and the entire industry in recent issue smart phone features that take advantage of GPS(Global Positioning System). This paper presents a Diligence and Indolence Management System using GPS of smart phone. offering the advantage of Web-based PMIS(Project Management Information System) through integration with real-time information transfer and smart phone applications for query by building a prototype of a professional construction company as their own on-site management measures are proposed to contribute time and attendance.
