  • As Korea experienced a Asian foreign exchange crisis in 1997 and a world financial crisis in 2008, the social structure of Korea has undergone many changes. The problem of polarization has become more serious, and the social class has become harder to move between strata. This problem has been accompanied by a growing sense of crisis that the power of social development can be lost along with the problem of population cliffs. Behind the crisis is a reflection of the fact that the growth-oriented economic policies and welfare policies implemented in various European countries can not solve the problem. As an alternative to this, the emergence of social enterprises is attracting attention. Social enterprises have the characteristic of seeking to generate economic profit in order to achieve the purpose of the public interest to provide jobs to the underprivileged. In recent years, the importance of social ventures to expand the scope of new social enterprises in innovative ways has increased. The social venture is a venture business in that it takes risks to develop new areas, not existing business areas, but it also has the character of a social enterprise to achieve the public interest. In other words, an innovative corporate model that provides a creative and challenging solution of social problems in the venture spirit. Although the interest and importance of social enterprises and social ventures are increasing, this academic research is still lacking. The purpose of this study is to introduce and analyze cases of successful social enterprises and social ventures in order to reflect these social interests and their importance and to fill the gap of previous studies. In addition, I hope that this study will stimulate interest and research on the start - up of social venture.

  • This paper presents a comparison of Korean and Manchurian railway system during the Japanese colonial era of Korea. While both railways share the common characteristics of an imperial railway, they revealed several differences. Firstly, the Manchurian railway was likely a private company, although it was operated half privately and half by the government. The Manchurian railway operated like the East Indian Company in India during the English colonial era. On the other hand, the Korean railway was fully operated by the government at a ministry level. While the Korean railway solely concentrated on the railway, the Manchurian railway was involved in regional development and the coal-mining industry as well. Secondly, in contrast to the Korean railway, the Manchurian railway was more lucrative, and was relatively more predominant regarding carriage of freights. Thirdly, railway officers in Korea were elected government bureaucrats, while Manchurian railway officers came from diverse political parties and social strata. After the annexation by the Kwantung Army, the Manchurian railway was mainly influenced by the military. The common characteristic here was that both railways were utilized for military purposes as imperial railways. In partilcular, the Manchurian railway executed military orders directly. Hereafter, through a comparative study between the Japanese and Taiwanese railways, a clear and accurate understanding of the characteristics of the Korean railway during the Japanese era will be revealed.

  • Operating under the principle of user-benefit maximization and democratic user-control, cooperatives are being spot-lighted as a business model satisfying the various social, financial needs. In Korea, the Law of Cooperative was enacted as of December 2012, which has enabled the establishment of cooperatives in variety of industry fields. This study is to discuss the expected effect and validity of marketing cooperative as a solution for insufficient sales revenue in international distribution of Korean animation. The interviews with Korean animation studios found out the key problems of overseas distribution, which are; 1) lack of marketing expertise and weak organization, 2) lack of ancillary rights exploitation due to the deals based upon all rights package with the broadcasters who are not interested in ancillary business, 3) lack of localized marketing support in each territory. The solution for these problems takes large and long-term marketing investment and it is far beyond the capabilities of small Korean animation studios. Marketing cooperative can provide services not available otherwise such as in-depth market research which will help the improvement of international marketing expertise. Also. as the cooperative carries enough volume of animation catalogue, it can increase negotiation power satisfying the various needs of buyers. Also, it can provide the precise marketing support for each territory by integrating every process of value chain, from TV broadcasting, merchandising, and digital media platform. Above all, a clear benefit of marketing cooperative is that, because of its user-benefit and user-control principle, the principal-agent problem can be minimized while it maximizes the profit for member studios.

  • This study suggests the way of revitalization of strategic specialized industry from the perspective of design business model. In order to revitalize the regional strategic specialized industry, it is necessary to overcome traditional production-based industry structure. For the industry's side, companies should convert their traditional production-based business perspective into market-oriented or design-oriented one. For the designer's side, they need to lead the design-centered industry structure by suggesting active design sources to industries escaping from passive design development perspective. Namely, the revitalization of strategic specialized industry can be peformed by design-based and market-oriented business execution. The formation of market-oriented industry can be accomplished by designers who do their design development works with design-business perspective and play an active role in the industry system. For the suggestion of concept mentioned above, this study conceptualized the meaning of design business, and applied the concept of it to the case study for bamboo industry of Damyang province. The case study suggests the possibility that designers are able to create higher profit through various sources such as sales royalty, production royalty etc by playing an active role for design development, industry selection, business system establishment and so on. In addition, the study implies that industries can increase the possibility of business success through design-based business execution mentioned above.

  • When attempting to use the income approach for the purpose of technology valuation, it is essential to identify the economic life of the technology in question. From the mid-2000s up to the present, the methods proposed by major Korean institutions for estimating the economic life of technologies have been based on cited patent life (CLT), which is one of the types of technology life. The present study utilizes cited patent life (CLT) to estimate the economic life of technology for the purpose of technology valuation, and proposes a new method of analyzing cited patent life, a method that has been improved by taking into consideration the elapsed period and the time period of investment required for commercialization, two factors which have been hitherto overlooked. Survival curve analysis is a method that has already been widely utilized to estimate the economic life of tangible assets, and this study applies the same method to the calculation of the cited patent life index of technology to provide a more objective method for determining the lifetime of a technology. The remaining life expectancy of cited patent life based on the number of elapsed years was calculated and used to determine the life expectancy of a technology that has reached a specific number of elapsed years, which is referred to as the remaining cited-patent life time (r-CLT).

  • In order to newly expand and define the concept of "strategic servitization" based on Industry 4.0, this study tried to evaluate the existing status of domestic and foreign servitized manufacturing and investigated the servitization cases of some leading overseas companies. In addition, we chose 250 samples of manufacturing firms listed on KOSDAQ and collected a vast amount of data regarding servitized manufacturing, such as the current status about new businesses, profit model, and financial fluctuations of each company. Based on these data, we classified the main types of manufacturing-service convergence into a $2{\times}2$ framework and derived a new strategic servitization model for each type of signature. Furthermore, we divided the sample corporations into three groups, which are pure manufacturer, servitized firm, and strategic servitized firm, and through the mutual comparison of the real sales amounts and the estimated sales amounts by time-series extrapolation analysis, we statistically proved that the service sales of strategic servitized firms give positive impacts on ROA when compared with those of the other two groups. Finally, we selected 12 leading domestic strategic-servitized firms, interviewed them in depth, and not only organized the issues during this process and their solutions by categories but also suggested the policy demands for strategic servitization.

  • In the overseas plant construction market, the domain construction firms' construction capability has been greatly improved, but the capability of project management is evaluated to be insufficient compared to the technical aspect. Project management capabilities from the initial planning stage of project execution are regarded as the core competence of advanced construction companies. Among them, it is urgent to improve the capacity of conceptual estimate for domestic companies. In this study, the researchers surveyed and analyzed the methodology of estimating project cost in the planning phase of the plant project and developed an estimation method by conducting a case study analysis. Based on the logic of the cost index and parametric estimation method among the existing estimation methodology, the estimation tool was developed by deriving the input and output variables tailored to the plant project. The validity of the proposed methodology was evaluated by comparing the accuracy between the project estimate amount of the case project and the actual project amount. In order to increase the utilization of the developed conceptual estimate methodology, for plant construction project, it is necessary to systematize the data of the historical project data. Increasing the accuracy of future project cost estimates is directly related to increasing project award and profitability of the domestic construction company.

  • Electronic records are generated not only in public sector but also in private sector. Records will be used across the public-private boundary. The Certified e-Document Authorities(CeDAs) may keep electronic documents in private sector for preservation and evidence, like the official Record Management Systems for Public sector. A CeDA is the Trusted Third Party (TTP) as a business to be entrusted and proof interchanging documents between parties. This CeDA system could be sustainable only if the CeDA earn the enough sales through enough uses. And yet, all the eight CeDA companies have not had enough users. How to utilize CeDAs is one of the hot issues in this area. In this paper, We analyze the threat to trustworthiness of CeDA due to payment of only one party among others, and describe the difficulty in use of CeDA for an individual user. These things make CeDAs cannot have enough users. To do address these, We expand the boundary of relevant parties for a document, present a delegate-establishing option under a joint name, show the needs of identifying and notifying minimum relevant parties, and suggest the proxy parties to help the individual users.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficiency of 90 domestic passenger shipping routes using the DEA Window model as a Decision Making Unit (DMU). Data from 2015 to 2019 are divided into three windows, and efficiency was analyzed by using the number of passenger ships of sails, gross tonnage and distance traveled as input variables and transportation performance of the general public and islanders as output variables. As a result of the analysis, improvements are derived and presented for routes with low relative efficiency. In particular, the efficiency is evaluated for general routes operated by private operators as profit routes and auxiliary routes supported by the government as non-profit routes. In addition, scale efficiency (SE) is derived by using the technical efficiency (TE) of the CCR model and the pure technical efficiency (PTE) values of the BCC model. It is found that the inefficiency of the route was due to pure technical efficiency (PTE) rather than scale efficiency (SE). It will be necessary to consider the improvements for each route shown in the analysis results of this study when establishing the policy for the domestic passenger shipping route.
