  • This study was conducted to estimate the contents of trace metals in vegetable which were produced in Korea. The levels of trace metals determined using a mercury analyzer, and ICP (inductively coupled plasma spectrometer) and an AAS (atomic absorption spectrophotometer) after wet digestion. The values of trace metals [minimum~maximum (mean), mg/kg] in vegetables were a follows ; Hg : 0.0001~0.019 (0.002), Pb : 0.001~0.28 (0.02), Cd : 0.001~0.078 (0.016), As : 0.001~0.06 (0.02), Cu : 0.06~24.81 (0.77), Mn : 0.17~15.12 (2.32), Zn : 0.13~28.70 (2.51). These results showed that metal contents in vegetables on domestic markets were similar to those reported in other countries. The weekly average intakes of lead, cadmium and mercury from vegetables take 2~7% of PTWI (Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intakes) that the FAO/WHO Joint Food Additive and Contaminants Committee had set to evaluate their safeties.

  • We developed three-wavelength solar bank which is a very important part of the solar simulator with the commercial mercury lamps and projected halogen lamps. This was developed to satisfy simultaneously following three points: the ${\pm}10%$ uniformity of irradiance of the target area and irradiance in the each wave region and $1120W/m^2$ maximum irradiance of the solar in the summer. We used spectral radiance to determine the standard of the spectral irradiance and developed the perfect three-wavelength solar bank, considering of directionality, irradiance distance, interval both lamps, lamps combination and lamp numbers based on the measured spectral irradiance. To proof the capability of the three wavelength solar bank, We carefully analyzed color differences and heat transfer. As a result, we found that three wavelength solar bank was much better than commercial infrared lamp bank in terms of the color differences, heat transfer phenomena.

  • This survey was carried out to estimate the contents of heavy metals (Hg, Pb, Cd, and As) in 10 kinds of dried marine products (n=189) which are closely related to food resources. The contents of heavy metals were estimated by inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (ICP) and mercury analyzer. The values of heavy metals in dried marine products were as follows (Mean${\pm}$SD (range), mg/kg). The average contents of heavy metals in the dried marine products were Hg $0.058{\pm}0.069$ (0.002~0.502) mg/kg, Pb $0.178{\pm}0.598$ (ND~5.130) mg/kg, Cd $0.306{\pm}0.610$ (ND~6.802) mg/kg, As $5.282{\pm}6.158$ (ND~71.760) mg/kg. The range of heavy metal contents in dried marine products are low level, except of lead contents (n=2). In the comparison of heavy metal content by anchovy size, it was shown that cadmium, mercury and arsenic were meaningfully different. The contents of heavy metals by the shape of shrimp and Alaska Pollack were shown that the result of each group was meaningless. In the comparison imported production with domestic production, in the case of common squid, cadmium and arsenic were meaningfully different. The weekly average intakes of Hg, Pb and Cd from dried marine products takes about 1.17~11.52% of PTWI (Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intakes) that FAO/WHO Joint Food Additive and Contaminants Committee has set to evaluate their safeties.

  • Temperature distribution of 250W high-pressure mercury lamp has been measured by the spectroscopic method using relative intensities of spectral lines. To obtain radial temperature distribution, the measured intensity which was integrated along the line of sight was transformed into radial line intensity by Abel's inversion. Temperature was determined from relative intensities of spectral lines of the same atomic species. The measured temperature of 250W high-pressure mercury lamp is 6000K at the axis. In this experiment temperature profile of high-pressure arc is papabolic as known.

  • We found the point-spread function (PSF) including the recording and reconstruction systems of the modified triangular interferometer. We also derived the resolutions of the modified and Cochran's triangular interferometers, then the resolutions of both systems for amplification factor, wavelength, and hologram size were found and analyzed. Also, to demonstrate the feasibility of incoherent holography, the formation of an incoherent hologram using a mercury lamp and its optical reconstruction were presented.

  • This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of cooking methods of boiling and frying on the removal of mercury from vegetables. Garand chrysanthemums and the leaves of young radishes contained 0.23 and 0.15 ppm of mercury, respectively. When they were boiled, the content of the mercury decreases to 78 percent in garland chrysanthemums and 73 per cent in radish leaves. When they were fried, the content of the mercury decreases to 69 percent in garland chrysanthemums and 60 percent in radish leaves. After the vegetables were exposed to 0.11 ppm of mercury dichloride for 2 hours, the raw garland chrysanthemums and the raw young radish leaves were contaminated with 6.65, 6.10 ppm of mercury, respectively. When the vegetables were boiled after this contamination, the mercury was dissolved and. melted out about 10.0%, however, when the vegetables were fried the mercury was dissolved and melted out about $12{\sim}24%$. When the vegetables were exposed to 1.0 ppm of mercury dichloride, the raw garland chrysanthemums was contaminated with 10.79 ppm of mercury and the radish leaves 10.83 ppm of mercury. The mercury was dissolved and melted out about 10-20% and 10-30% when the vegetables were boiled and fried, respectively. From these results, it can be suggested that frying is more effective cooking method than boiling for the elimination of mercury from its contaminated foods.

  • For this paper we analyzed heavy metals including lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury, and conducted risk assessment on 171 types of herbal medicines used as foods and drugs distributed in Seoul's Yangnyeongsi and Kyungdong (Gyeongdong) herbal medicine markets. The concentrations of the heavy metals were measured by the ICP-MS and a mercury analyzer. The detection ranges of the lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury were found to be ND-4.719 mg/kg, ND-1.019 mg/kg, 0.002-8.696 mg/kg and ND-0.058 mg/kg, respectively. Artemisiae Capillaris Herba exceeded the standards of the MFDS (Ministry of Food and Drug Safety) for cadmium items, and Actinidiae Ramulus et Fulium et Fructus Vermicultus exceeded the standards for arsenic items. The non-carcinogenic risk assessment showed that there were no items exceeding 1 and that they were safe. The risk of carcinogenicity to lead was below 10-6 in all items and was evaluated as safe. The risk of carcinogenicity of arsenic was almost all in the range of 10-4 to 10-6. All %PTWI are considered to be safe below 100.
