  • In this study, the relationships among high school students' epistemological views on theory and data, science process skills, the perceptions of the preferred laboratory learning environment and attitudes toward laboratory work were investigated. The results indicated that science process skills, all subcategories of the perceptions of the preferred laboratory learning environment (student cohesiveness, open-endedness, integration, rule clarity, and material environment) and attitudes toward laboratory work were significantly correlated with epistemological views on theory and data. The results of multiple regression analysis revealed that science process skills, open-endedness and material environment and attitudes toward laboratory work significantly predicted epistemological views on theory and data.

  • This study investigates the effect of SSI debate on first-year high school student's opinions about environmental issue, their judgment grounds, and solutions to regional environmental problems. The SSI debate was about white heron habitats near the village where students live. As the main data of the study, environmental perception questionnaires, and students' workbook including open-ended questions were collected before and after class. The environmental perception questionnaire was analyzed by descriptive statistics, and the response of the open-ended questions was analyzed through inductive qualitative research methods. First, the results of this study shows that the SSI debate has a statistically significant impact on students' environmental attitude. Second, a majority of students agreed on the idea that villagers should drive the birds out of town and they did not change their after the discussion class. However, after the discussion class, students' solutions about the issue were changed in a way that more short-term, feasible, concrete, and less time-consuming solutions to the problem. Based on the results of this study, this study implies that SSI issue debate using local problem should be used more often in science classroom so the students recognize local SSI and improve real world problem solving skills.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate middle school students' and teachers' perception of psychological learning environments as well as the differences between them. This study sampled 503 middle school students and the 16 teachers who taught them. 'Psychological Learning Environment Instrument by Science Teacher' was implemented to collect data. Frequency analysis and descriptive statistics, as well as t-test, ANOVA were used for basic analysis of data. There were statistically meaningful differences in students' perception of psychological learning environments by gender, science achievement, science preference and self-efficacy in science. However, there are no differences in teachers' perceptions of psychological learning environments by gender, age, career year and major. The difference between teachers' and students' perception of psychological learning environments was not large, showing no statistical significance. However, teachers' perceptions of psychological learning environments was a little higher than that of students.

  • Although cooperative learning strategies in many subject areas have been found to be effective, the effect of cooperative learning on academic achievement in science laboratory setting is not clear. Reported results on the effects of the strategies for higher achieving students are not also consistent. In this study, the cooperative learning strategies emphasizing student-centered learning which included higher order thinking activities were used in a elementary school science course. The cooperative and traditional learning groups were selected from fifth-grade classes, and taught about dissolution and solution for 16 class periods. The effects of the cooperative learning strategies upon students' academic achievement, science process skill, the attitude toward science instruction, and the perceptions of classroom environment were investigated. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the test scores of academic achievement and science process skill for the cooperative learning group were significantly higher than those of the traditional learning group. No interaction between the instruction and the level of previous achievement was found. The perceptions of confliction were higher in cooperative learning group. In the attitude toward science instruction and the perceptions of participation, however, no significant difference between the two groups was found. Educational implications are discussed.

  • This study investigated the effects of climate change project learning on elementary students' attitudes toward climate change and environmental literacy. Climate change project learning was conducted on 174 sixth-grade elementary school students in a metropolitan city (77 male, 97 female), after which their perceptions and attitudes toward climate change and environmental literacy were assessed. The climate change project learning had a positive effect on the students' perceptions and attitudes toward climate change, which was surmised because of the climate change content sharing and discussions during the project learning. The climate change project learning also had a positive effect on the students' environmental literacy, especially their environmental attitudes, values, and behavior; however, there were no statistically significant changes found for environmental sensitivity. This study highlights the educational effects and implications of environmentally focused climate change projectbased education for elementary school students.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare students' perception shaped by two different university classrooms: Traditional Classroom and ALC(Active learning classroom). We conducted survey of 71 university students who were taught by an identical instructor using same pedagogy. The survey questionnaires asked respondents about their perceptions on teaching and learning and physical environments relations, teaching proficiency, social context, student satisfaction and immersion. The data was analyzed using Student's T-test. The results showed that ALC group, compared to the traditional classroom group, demonstrated statistically higher awareness on teaching and learning and physical environments relations, teaching proficiency, and instructor-student unofficial relations. Based on these findings, implications and limitations of this study were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the middle science teachers' perceptions on science lessons with experiments. The study conducted a survey for 110 science teachers participating in inservice program. The middle school science teachers taught classes with lectures rather than with experimental activities. They had an experiment one to three times a semester in their lessons. They did an experiment to follow to what the textbook said, or to confirm it, like a cookbook style. The most teachers answered that they had over average ability to teach both lecture and experiment. Through the experiment, they expected students had interests and curiosity on science. Despite the advantages of experiments, there were many constraints to conduct experiments, such as teachers' excessive work, laboratory conditions, education environment, and others. It was demanded on continuous interest and investment in the variation of educational environment so that teachers can experiment more often.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the feasibility of Flipped Learning teaching and learning methods in pre-math teachers' education through investigation of pre-math teachers' awareness about the method. To achieve the goal, we implemented Flipped Learning model that was composed of three steps in mathematics education class of 30 pre-math teachers and then we investigated their awareness about the model and process. Pre-math teachers' awareness were positive about the model and process of Flipped Learning, but some matters were suggested about learning environment. The results of this study showed the feasibility of Flipped Learning in pre-math teachers' education.

  • We investigated the extent of recognition and the rate of class practice on the contents relevant to the environmental education in the units of 'Clothing Life' of the 7th 'Technology-Home Economics' curriculum in Korean middle school teachers. Two hundred sixty teachers, who had taught the units of 'Clothing Life' and responded to the questionnaires by mail from December 2007 to January 2008, were enrolled and each item in the questionnaires was analyzed in this study. Most teachers recognized the serious environmental issues in their residential area resulting in a harmful influence on their lives. Also they exhibited increased practice will such as joining to the environmental organizations and showed high practice of the environmental preservation. They commented relatively high rate of class practice on the contents relevant to the environmental education and enhanced practice of the environmental preservation in all units of 'Clothing Life' of the 7th 'Technology-Home Economics' curriculum except the units of 'Clothing Skill and Dress Clothes' and 'Simple Clothes Making'. Moreover, teachers with higher age and longer teaching career had the higher level of recognition and the greater rate of class practice on the environmental education compared to those without. Teachers should try to raise the students' recognition and practice will on the environmental issues in the class of 'Clothing Life' of the 7th 'Technology-Home Economics' curriculum in Korean middle school.
