  • This study explore characteristics of teaching orientation and pck of science teachers in online-offline mixed learning environment. Data consisted of open-ended survey, semi-structured interview, class observation, field notes from 12 science teachers. We categorized teaching orientation considering both science education goals and science teaching·learning orientation. There were 8 different teaching orientations such as 'understanding science concepts-lecture centered' 'constructing science concepts-inquiry based' 'applying science concepts and inquiry-inquiry based' 'applying science concepts and inquiry-lectured centered' 'analyzing and judging science information-inquiry based' 'developing scientific attitude-inquiry based' 'developing scientific attitude-lecture centered' and 'developing perception of interrelationships among science, technology, and society-inquiry based'. Teachers with inquiry based teaching·learning orientation seemed to have knowledge of science curriculum specific to online learning environment for student inquiry. While teachers with 'understanding science concepts-lecture centered' teaching orientation appeared to have questioning strategy of checking student understanding and strategy of repeating a lecture, teachers with 'constructing science concepts-inquiry based' teaching orientation appeared to have knowledge of instructional strategies to perform online group activities targeting student construction of knowledge and to replace face-to-face group activities with virtual experiments and individual experiments. While teachers with 'understanding science concepts-lecture centered' teaching orientation did not show knowledge of student science learning, teachers with 'constructing science concepts-inquiry based' teaching orientation appeared to have knowledge of student difficulties in inquiry based learning.

  • This study analyzed learners' satisfaction and in-depth interviews with teachers after operating a software practical curriculum as a real-time video class for fifth and sixth graders in elementary school. The correlation between learner's presence, class overall, interaction, and real-time video class satisfaction showed that the positive correlation between presence, class overall, interaction, and satisfaction with real-time video classes was somewhat high. There were some differences in the real-time video class participation environment and real-time video class satisfaction, but it was not found to be statistically significant. In the case of teachers, it was difficult to respond to problems occurring in each student's individual environment, interactions between students, and individual feedback problems for a sluggish student. To solve this problem, opinions such as preliminary guidance and verification of real-time video class connection environment, error support for sluggish students and individual class participation environment, and feedback on individual tasks using LMS were suggested.

  • The objective of this study is to find out the professionalism of secondary school teachers in teaching environmental subjects. This research was conducted using a questionnaire survey of 431 secondary school teachers from 34 schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, Korea. A 5-point Likert scale self-evaluation questionnaire on their professionalism in environmental education was developed based on Hungerford et al.'s (1994) evaluation criteria. Two middle school teachers' classes were observed, and video taping and interviewing were also conducted. The survey analysis revealed that teachers evaluated their professionalism on environmental subjects to be a little above the middle of the scale. The mean values were 2.80 for the foundation level; 2.86 for the conceptual awareness level; 2.84 for the investigation level; 2.94 for the environmental action skills level; and 2.84 for the educational application level. However, class observations revealed that there was some gap between their self-evaluation of professionalism and their actual classroom application. Both classes were not that satisfactory with regard to 'the abilities to communicate and apply ecological concepts', 'the ability to clarify the roles of different value systems for environmental issues and personal values in decision making', 'the ability to clarify their own value system regarding solutions to environmental issues', and 'the ability to apply citizen action skills for solving environmental issues and for sustainable development'. The results provide a basic reference for the improvement of environmental-related education.

  • This study investigates the effect of SSI debate on first-year high school student's opinions about environmental issue, their judgment grounds, and solutions to regional environmental problems. The SSI debate was about white heron habitats near the village where students live. As the main data of the study, environmental perception questionnaires, and students' workbook including open-ended questions were collected before and after class. The environmental perception questionnaire was analyzed by descriptive statistics, and the response of the open-ended questions was analyzed through inductive qualitative research methods. First, the results of this study shows that the SSI debate has a statistically significant impact on students' environmental attitude. Second, a majority of students agreed on the idea that villagers should drive the birds out of town and they did not change their after the discussion class. However, after the discussion class, students' solutions about the issue were changed in a way that more short-term, feasible, concrete, and less time-consuming solutions to the problem. Based on the results of this study, this study implies that SSI issue debate using local problem should be used more often in science classroom so the students recognize local SSI and improve real world problem solving skills.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify whether the Interactive Cinematherapy Course developed based on discussion is still effective for emotional intelligence and empathic ability, even in a college lecture environment where courses are given online due to COVID-19. The subjects were enrolled in the Interactive Cinematherapy Course and experienced either an online (N=139) or offline (N=212) course before and after COVID-19. To the offline course, students were given structural questions and conducted discussions, whereas the online course students were given feedback via e-mail to substitute discussion. The results were as follows. Compared to the offline courses, students in both online/offline courses commonly showed an increase in "Other's emotion appraisal", "Cognitive Empathy", "Perspective taking", "Fantasy", and "Emphatic Concern". The online course students showed an increase in the "Use of emotion", while offline course students showed an increase in "Self emotion appraisal". This shows that online and offline courses do not have a significant difference in effects. In qualitative research, the lecturer's communication ability and concern helped enhance the effectiveness of the Interactive Cinematherapy Course given online. This implies that communication between the lecturer and students and role of the lecturer are more important than the online environment.
