Effect of GA, IAA, Kinetin on Plant Regrowth of Sorghum(Sorghum vulgare Per.) and Pearlmillet (Pennisetum typhoides Stapf.) after Cut (지베레린, 오옥신, 카이네틴 처리가 수수 및 진주조의 재생에 미치는 영향)

  • Field experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of plant growth regulator (PGR); IAA, GA, Kinetin to regrowth of sorghum and pearlmillet according to variety and plant growth stage. Kinetin application after cut increased tiller number and decreased dry weight of regrowth, but its application on sorghum stubble in water stress increased tiller number and leaf elongation rate, consequently increased regrowth dry weight. GA application reduced tiller production in both species, but tiller formation in pearlmillet was decreased more than in sorghum by promoting leaf elongation of old tiller. Nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) of stubble during regrowth was consumed less at anthesis than at stem elongation stage because of senescence of tiller primordia. GA treatment reduced NSC content more than other PGR in both plant species, by consuming reserve NSC and stimulating rapid elongation of old tiller after cut. Dry matter increase during regrowth had high correlation with tiller number and tiller elongation a week after cut, while it did not have any correlation with NSC at cutting stage or with consumption of NSC during regrowth. Therefore, regrowth in sorghum and pearmillet must depend upon activity of tiller primordia more than upon amount of reserved NSC.

Starch characteristics of foxtail millet and sorghum cultivars grown in Korea (국내 육성 조 및 수수 전분의 이화학적 특성)

  • In this study, we investigated the starch characteristics of foxtail millet (FM) and sorghum (SG) cultivars grown in Korea. The amylose contents were 29.42 and 6.42% in the Daname and Samdachal FM cultivars, and 9.09 and 11.11% in the Nampungchal and Sodamchal SG cultivars, respectively. The amylopectin polymerization analysis showed that the highest degree of polymerization (DP) was in the range of DP13-24 for all samples, at approximately 60%. The resistant starch content was very low (<0.10%) among the FM and SG cultivars. The starch gelatinization analysis showed low setback values in the Samdachal and Nampungchal cultivars. The gelatinization enthalpy, calculated based on an endothermic reaction, did not differ significantly between the SG cultivars but was significantly higher in the Samdachal FM cultivars than in the Daname FM cultivars. The results of this study might be used as basic data for the development of FM and SG products.

Correlation Analysis between Productivity of Forage Sorghum × Sudangrass Hybrids [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] and Climatic Factors in Central Northern Region of South Korea (중북부지역에서 수수×수단그라스 교잡종의 생산성과 기후요인과의 상관분석)

  • Sorghum×sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, SSH) is one of the most important summer forage crop and it is widely used for silage in Korea. Agriculture is highly dependent on the climate condition and experiencing significant loss of productivity due to climate change. This study was conducted to investigate the correlation analysis between productivity of forage SSH and climatic factors in Central Northern region of South Korea for 3 years (2017 to 2019). Plant height and dry matter yield of SSH were significantly higher in Gyeonggi-do than Ganwon-do. The productivity of SSH is more closely related with temperature than other climatic factors. Maximum temperature and Growing degree days in May and June showed a positive correlation. However, correlation between production of SSH and precipitation was not clear in this study, but rainy days showed a negative correlation (0.42). In conclusion, temperature is most important climatic factor to the maintenance of plant yield.

Comparison of Functional Materials in Organic Cultivated Minor Cereal Crops (유기농 잡곡의 몇몇 기능성 물질 비교)

  • Miscellaneous grain crops has been appeared as a well-being food and the demand of them are increasing recently. It is urgent to study especially about the functional materials of foxtail millet, common millet and sorghum. This experiment was conducted to evaluation and comparison several functional materials of fatty acids, anthocyanin content, total phenol content and DPPH assay of rice, and foxtail millet, common millet and sorghum produced organically so that these results would provide as a basic information for developing functional products by using miscellaneous grain crops. Total content of fatty acids was in order of foxtail millet (0.649%) and common millet (0.33%), sorghum (0.172%) and rice (0.111%) respectively. The content of unsaturated fatty acid was also in order of foxtail millet (0.511%) and common millet (0.269%), sorghum (0.122%) and rice (0.069%) respectively. Although there was no detection of anthocyanin content in rice, foxtail millet and common millet, sorghum showed high content of anthocyanin content. Sorghum of Mongdangsusu showed the highest anthocyanin content (137.5mg/g). In the total phenol content of rice, foxtail millet, common millet and sorghum, rice of Chucheongbyeo had high content ($13.70{\mu}g/g$) whereas Daeanbyeo was the lowest content ($10.07{\mu}g/g$). Foxtail millet of Hinchajo, common millet of Byeorukgijang and sorghum of Chalsusu showed the highest total phenol content of $25.8{\mu}g/g$, $69.4{\mu}g/g$ and $682.2{\mu}g/g$ respectively. In the average of total phenol content among rice, foxtail millet, common millet and sorghum, foxtail millet, common millet and sorghum showed $12.25{\mu}g/g$, $16.95{\mu}g/g$, $51.01{\mu}g/g$ and $447.4{\mu}g/g$ of total phenol content respectively. The average of total phenol content of sorghum was $26.3{\mu}g/g$. It is 36.3 and 26.3 times higher compared with rice and foxtail millet respectively. In the antioxidant activity of seeds by DPPH(1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) assay for rice, foxtail millet, common millet and sorghum, rice of Chucheongbyeo, foxtail millet of Ganghywajo and common millet of Geumeungijang showed the highest antioxidant activity with 3.6%, 4.78% and 13.4% respectively. Antioxidant activity of sorghum ranged from 88.47 to 90.11%. The average of antioxidant activity among four crops, the highest antioxidant activity was obtained from sorghum (89.50%) and the next was common millet (6.13%), foxtail millet (2.43%), and rice (1.60%) in their order of antioxidant activity. The average of antioxidant activity of sorghum showed 55.9, 37.0 and 15times higher compared with rice, common millet and foxtail millet respectively.

옥수수 전분 추출공정 및 물성개선을 위한 방사선의 이용연구

  • 옥수수 전분의 추출공정 개선 연구의 일환으로 메 밀 찰옥수수에 0-10 kGy범위의 감마선을 조사한 후 전분 추출시험과 추출전분의 이화학적 특성을 펴가하였다. 적정선량 범위의 감마선조사는 전분추출을 위한 침지시간을 기존 50시간에서 40시간으로 단축 시킬 수 있었으며, 환경기준 물질인 옥수수침지액(아황산용액)의 농도를 기존 0.8-1.2% 에서 0.2%로 크게 감소시킬 수 있었다. 또한 옥수수전분 추출액에 있어서 감마선 조사된 메옥수수와 찰옥수수는 비조사군에 비해 10-30% 이상의 추출율 증대효과를 나타내었다. 추 전분의 이화학적 특성시험에있어서는 두 시료 모두 감마선조사에 의해 alkaili number와 광투과도가 크게 증가 하였으며, 물 결합능력 및 swelling power는 다소 감소하는 경향이었다.전분의 색도는 조사군과 비조사군 사이에 유의적인 차이가 없었다. 효소반응 시험에서는 감마선 조사량이 증가함에 따라 효소반응 생성물인 포도당과 환원당 함량이 크게 증가하였다. Amylograph에 의한 물성시험에서는 감마선조사에 의해 전분호화액의 점도는 감소되었고, 그 경향은 메옥수수보다 찰옥수수에서 더욱 현저하였다. 또한 감마선의 이용은 옥수수 전분의 breakdown ratio 및 setback ratio를 향상시킬 수 있어 식품가공에서 전분의 고존도 사입 가능성을 시사하였다. 시사하였다.

Physicochemical Characteristics of the Tofu (Soybean Curd) Added Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) Powder (수수가루 첨가에 따른 두부의 이화학적 특성)

  • This study was carried out to compare the physicochemical characteristics of the tofu (soybean curd) with the additions of sorghum powder (SP). With increasing amounts of sorghum powder, the yields of tofu were increased. The tofu made of 5 and 7% (w/w) addition rates of SP gave the similar yields with that of control. Moisture contents of the tofu made of roasted sorghum powder after steeping for 15 hours (WR-SP) were higher than those of the control and the tofu made of roasted sorghum powder after washing (SR-SP) without steeping. The dietary fiber contents of tofu were higher in the SP-added tofu than control. The potassium contents increased with SP addition rates, while calcium and magnesium decreased. With increasing SP addition rates, hardness of the tofu decreased. With increasing amounts of SP, the L- and b-values of tofu decreased, whereas a-value increased. The total polyphenol, flavonoid and tannin contents, and ascorbic acid equivalent antioxidant capacity in the tofu extracts increased with increasing SP rates. Antioxidant components and activity were the highest in the tofu made of roasted sorghum powder after washing without steeping with the addition rates of 3-10%.

Comparative Evaluation of Antioxidant Activities of Ethanol Extracts and Their Solvent Fractions Obtained from Selected Miscellaneous Cereal Grains (잡곡 유래 에탄올 추출물 및 이의 유기용매 분획들의 항산화 활성 비교평가)

  • To examine the antioxidant activities of 11n selected miscellaneous cereal grains (proso millet, yellow glutinous proso millet, hwanggeumchal sorghum, glutinous sorghum, white glutinous sorghum, yellow glutinous foxtail millet, nonglutinous foxtail millet, green glutinous foxtail millet, golden foxtail millet, barnyard millet, and adlay), the free radical-scavenging activities of 80% ethanol extracts of the individual grains were investigated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) methods. The ethanol extracts of hwanggeumchal sorghum, glutinous sorghum, and barnyard millet grains exhibited more potent free radical-scavenging activities as compared to the other grains. When these three ethanol extracts were sequentially fractionated with n-hexane, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol, the majority of the antioxidant activities were detected in the ethyl acetate and butanol fractions in which phenolic ingredients were abundant. The ethyl acetate and butanol fractions of hwanggeumchal sorghum and the ethyl acetate fraction of glutinous sorghum showed higher antioxidant activity than that of ${\alpha}$-tocopherol. Both ferric thiocyanate (FTC) and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) methods demonstrated that these organic solvent fractions could inhibit lipid peroxidation. The ethyl acetate fractions from hwanggeumchal sorghum, glutinous sorghum, and barnyard millet grains could suppress tertiary-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP)-induced apoptotic events, including sub-G1 peaks, ${\Delta}{\Psi}m$ loss, activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3, and cleavage of PARP and lamin B, in human HL-60 cells. These results show that the grains of hwanggeumchal sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench cv. Hwanggeumchalsusu), glutinous sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench cv. Chalsusu), and barnyard millet (Echinochloa esculenta) possess efficient antioxidant activity, which could protect cells from oxidative stress-mediated cytotoxicity.

식물성아미노산 이용에 관한 고찰

  • 옥수수 수입가격의 앙등으로 인하여 옥수수를 대치할 수 있는 수수, 밀, 보리등의 이용방법을 사료업계에서 논의하고 있는 이 때에 아미노산의 영양적 성분과 이용을 이해할 필요가 있다. 무엇보다 아미노산 분석표의 적합성을 항상 고려하여 아미노산의 유효성에 관한 실험결과를 참작하여야 할 것이다. 옥수수, 수수, 밀, 보리 같은 식물성 단백질에 공통적으로 결핍되어 있는 아미노산은 주로 라이신, 알지닌, 메치오닌, 시스틴, 드레오닌이며 이 아미노산의 유효성은 사료분석표에 나타나 있는 함량과 다르다는 점에 특별히 유의하여야 될 것이다. 국내사료자원의 개발이 절실히 요구되는 이때에 고 라이신 옥수수(opaque-2)와 같은 수수, 밀, 보리가 우리나라에서도 재배 개량되기를 바라마지 않는다.

신품종소개 - 항산화 성분이 풍부한 건강기능성 메수수 '동안메'

  • 수수는 폴리페놀, 플라보노이드 등 다양한 기능성 성분이 많이 함유하고 있어 몸속 활성산소를 막는 항산화 효과와 더불어 고지혈증 예방, 항비만 및 항당뇨 등 주요 생활습관병에 우수한 건강기능성 식품으로 주목받고 있다. 하지만 재래종자는 유전적으로 순도가 높지 못해 쓰러짐에 약하고 수량이 낮아 품종개선이 필요했다. 이에 따라 농촌진흥청에서는 쓰러짐에 강하고 수량이 많은 메수수 '동안메'를 2012년에 육성하였다.
