The Analysis on Competitiveness of Railroad Transport - Focused on Container, Cement, Steel - (철도의 수송경쟁력 분석 - 컨테이너, 양회, 철강을 중심으로-)

  • The modal spilt for road has been increased, but, for railroad it has been decreased from 17.2%(1990) to 6.3%(2006). It is important to study on improving competition for railroad transportation so that freight transport industry for railroad which is getting to decrease in Korea will be increased. The objective of this study is to analyze the competitiveness of railroad transport compared with road by providing a high-speed railway. The indicators representing the competitiveness of railroad transport are determined. The main influenced factors for mode choice include transport cost, transport time, level of service. Precisely, three commodities type, container, cement, steel, are analyzed.

  • The modal spilt of highway has been increased and the one of railway has been decreased from 17.2%(1990) to 6.3%(2006). In this context, it is meaningful to examine the competitiveness of the railroad of Korea. The objective of this study is to analyze the competitiveness of railroad with the highway so that countermeasures improving the competitiveness of railroad could be suggested. For this, firs of all, indicators representing the competitiveness of the railroad transport are determined. The main influencing factors for mode choice include transport time, transport cost and level of service. Three types of commodity, container, cement and steel are the target for the analysis. It was found that the overall competitiveness of railroad transport is weaker compared with highway even for the main freight origin-destination pairs. It means that the freight transport system is focused on road rather than railroad. Therefore, we need to remeasure the competitiveness of railroad transport related to methods for freight railroad competitiveness improvement.

International Comparison of Railway Freight Performance (국가별 철도물류 운영현황 비교연구)

  • This study aims to quantify the railway freight performance using various indicators, to compare it over many countries, and to evaluate efficiency of railway freight in Korea. The indicators developed in this study was classified into two categories; country-specific and company-specific indicator. The former includes freight train density, average gross train load and average haul while the latter contains revenue/ton-km, ratio of operating costs to revenue, revenue per employee, ton-km per employee, costs per ton-km and ratio of labor costs to total operating costs. The results of this study shows that Korail performance is in low efficiency due to multi-frequency small amounts transport. The productivity of railway freight in Korea represented as ton-km per employee appears to be lower than that of other oversea companies considered in this study.

  • Transport Social Overhead Capital refers to public utilities necessary for a nation's basic economic activities, and is divided into roads, railway, subway, ports and so on. It is important to be able to provide these SOC in the right place at the right time to enhance productivity and competitiveness of a nation. In this study, correlation and factor analysis on countries' socioeconomic and transport indicators were performed in order to understand the need for expansion of SOCs including railway, and to identify the impact they have on national competitiveness(productivity). As a result, GDP showed high correlativity(0.59~0.99) with factors such as population, land area, extension of available railroad, and road extension. Specifically, through the analysis of Russia's urban transport system and comparison between socioeconomic indices and SOCs of OECD countries, it was examined that how increasing transport infrastructure investments could enhance national competitiveness. In conclusion, opening new Light Rail greatly affects the growth of GDP followed by the increasing extension of available railroad. Furthermore, if available railroad extension is increased by 10 % from 2014, assuming high speed tram is opened, GDP will likely increase by 21.6%.

  • Rail-road intermodal freight transport is a transoortation system that rail and road transport are utilized between origins and destinations. The roles of road(truck) in rail-road intermodal freight transport are pick-up and delivery that are keys parts of total transportation process. The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate the pick-up and delivery strategies for container trucks in order to increase their productivity. Two different strategies are developed : One is aimed for minimizing the total traveling distance of container and the other is to reduce the waiting time at client site. The comparative studies are performed on the actual network of Paris metropolitan. The simulation analysis shows that the proposed strategies are quite efficient in various performance measures.
