  • An activation energy equation for moisture diffusion in wood was developed with an assumption that activation energy is directly proportional to wood specific gravity. Theoretical activation energies obtained from the activation energy equation were revealed to be always lower than actual activation energies, which implies that activation energy isn't affected only by wood specific gravity. The other affecting factors are possibly anatomical structures of wood which determine a ratio of vapor diffusion to bound water diffusion in wood. For the convenience of estimating actual activation energy by using the activation energy equation, thirteen kinds of species were categorized into three groups according to their anatomical structures.

  • Water absorption of the major kernels(7 and 10mesh sizes) of naked barley differing in pearling degrees at $25-50^{\circ}C$ was investigated. The time to reach equilibrium moisture content was reduced by half upon removal of over 20% of the outer layer of the kernel. Water absorption rate and diffusion coefficient of naked barley of 5% pearling degree at $40^{\circ}C$ were faster about 1.5 and 2.8 times than those of unpearled one. The activation energy of hydration for unpearled naked barley was 11.5kcal/mole, which was decreased by approximately 0.4kcal/mole upon increasing the pearling degree by 5%.

  • A permeability of concrete is a very important factors evaluating durability. So, we are carrying out a lot of relational data bases and experiment regarding a permeability. In order to evaluate a permeability of concrete, we are proceeding study on the water penetration and diffusion in concrete by water pressure. Because a way to evaluate a permeability of concrete has a limit. We will present a good method of evaluating durability of concrete using the water penetration depth of concrete by water pressure. To carry this out, we executed experiment with penetration depth of concrete by water pressure and verified it though FEM analysis.

  • Water is continuously produced in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), and is transported and exhausted through polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM), catalyst layer (CL), microporous layer (MPL), and gas diffusion layer (GDL). The low operation temperatures of PEMFC lead to the condensation of water, and the condensed water hinders the transport of reactants in porous layers (MPL and GDL). Thus, water flooding is currently one of hot issues that should be solved to achieve higher performance of PEMFC. This research aims to study liquid water transport in porous layers of PEMFC by using pore-network model, while the microscale pore structure and hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface properties of GDL and MPL were fully considered.

  • Haines index which include the rating of atmosphere instability and dryness indicated the potential of the forest fire danger. In this study, the relationships between forest fire occurrence and Haines index were analyzed. The probability of forest fire occurrence was the highest in April and HI 5, 6 and the dryness of atmosphere was higher than the atmosphere instability. Therefore, It was proved that HI affected on the forest fire occurrence and propagation.

  • The effects of drying temperature on drying characteristics of soybeans with different grain sizes [6.0 (S), 7.5 (M), and 9.0 mm (L) (${\pm}0.2$)] with 25.0% (${\pm}0.8$) initial moisture content were studied. Drying temperatures varied at 25, 35, and $45^{\circ}C$, with a constant air velocity (13.2 m/s). Thin-layer drying models were applied to describe the drying process of soybeans. The Midilli-Kucuk model showed the best fit ($R^2$ >0.99). Based on the model parameters, drying time to achieve the target moisture content (10%) was successfully estimated. Drying time was strongly dependent on the size of soybeans and the drying temperature. The effective moisture diffusivity ($D_{eff}$) was estimated by the diffusion model based on Fick's second law. $D_{eff}$ values increased as grain size and drying temperature increased due to the combined effect of high temperatures and high drying rates, which promote compact tissue. Deff values of S, M, and L estimated were in the range of $0.83{\times}10^{-10}$ to $1.51{\times}10^{-10}m^2/s$, $1.17{\times}10^{-10}$ to $2.17{\times}10^{-10}m^2/s$, and $1.53{\times}10^{-10}$ to $2.95{\times}10^{-10}m^2/s$, respectively, whereas activation energy ($E_a$) based on drying temperature showed no significant differences in the size of soybeans.

  • Recently, the semiconductor package structures are becoming thinner and more complex. As the thickness decrease, interfacial delamination due to material mismatch can be further maximized, so the reliability of interface is a critical issue in industry field. Especially, the polymers, which are widely used in semiconductor packaging, are significantly affected by the temperature and moisture. Therefore, in this study, the delamination prediction at the interface of package structure was performed through finite element analysis considering the moisture absorption and desorption under the various temperature conditions. The material properties such as diffusivity and saturated moisture content were obtained from moisture absorption test. The hygro-swelling coefficients of each material were analyzed through TMA and TGA after the moisture absorption. The micro-shear test was conducted to evaluate the adhesion strength of each interface at various temperatures considering the moisture effect. The finite element analysis of interfacial delamination was performed that considers both deformation due to temperature and moisture absorption. Consequently, the interfacial delamination was successfully predicted in consideration of the in-situ moisture desorption and temperature behavior during the reflow process.

  • Although the exterior wood such as column may frequently contact with liquid water, little work has been found to measure liquid water absorption in wood. To investigate the moisture diffusivity of wood in the longitudinal direction including bound water and free water movement, liquid water absorption test was conducted at the room temperature. The order of magnitude for absorption coefficient and diffusivity was Japanese elm, horn beam, hemlock, spruce, radiata pine, and painted maple. The Boltzmann transformation method was used to determine the diffusivity from measured moisture content distributions in the absorption test. The shape of the curve representing the dependence of diffusivity with moisture content was similar in test samples. The diffusivity decreased with increasing moisture content until around the fiber saturation point and then increased at the nonhygroscopic region, which ranged from $10^{-10}$ to $10^{-7}m^2/s$.
