Gas turbine blades that have complex geometry of the cooling holes and cooling passages are usually subjected to cyclic and sustained thermal loads due to changes in the operating characteristic in combined power plants; these results in non-uniform temperature and stress distributions according to time to gas turbine blades. Those operation conditions cause creep or thermo-mechanical fatigue damage and reduce the lifetime of gas turbine blades. Thus, an accurate analysis of the stresses caused by various loading conditions is required to ensure the integrity and to ensure an accurate life assessment of the components of a gas turbine. It is well known that computational analysis such as cross-linking process including CFD, heat transfer and stress analysis is used as an alternative to demonstration test. In this paper, temperatures and stresses of gas turbine blade were calculated with fluid-structural analysis integrating fluid-thermal-solid analysis methodologies by considering actual operation conditions. Based on analysis results, additionally, the total lifetime was obtained using creep and thermo-mechanical damage model.
The construction of highway bridges is almost complete in many countries including the United States. The government and highway agencies change the focus from constructing to maintaining To maintain the bridges effectively there is an urgent need to assess actual bridge loading carrying capacity and to predict their remaining life. The system reliability techniques have to be used for this purpose. Based on lifetime distribution (function) techniques this study illustrates how typical highway bridges can be modeled to predict their remaining life. The parameters of lifetime distribution are generated by Monte. The results can be used for optimization of planning interventions on existing bridges.
The prediction and analysis procedure of fatigue damage crack growth life for a stiffener bonded composite laminate panel including center hole and edge notch damage, was studied. It was performed on the basis of fatigue damage growth test results on a laminated skin panel specimens and the analysis results of stress intensity factor for the stiffener bonded composite panel. According to the comparison between experimental test and prediction results of fatigue damage growth life, it was concluded that the residual strength and damage tolerance assessment can be carried out along to the edge notch crack growth.
In this paper, the system reliability concept was presented to predict the lifespan of bridges. Lifetime distribution functions (survivor functions) were used to model real bridges to predict their remaining life. Using the system reliability concept and lifetime distribution functions (survivor functions), a program called LIFETIME was developed. The survivor functions give the reliability of component at time t. The program was applied to an existing Colorado state highway bridge to predict the failure probability of the time-dependent system. The bridge was modeled as a system, with failure probability computed using time-dependent deteriorating models.
This study developed an analysis model of estimating fatigue damage using the linear elastic fracture mechanics method. Stress history occurring to an element when a truck passed over a bridge was defined as block loading and crack closure theory explaining load interaction effect was applied. Stress range frequency analysis considering dead load stress and crack opening was done. Probability of stress range frequency distribution was applied and the probability distribution parameters were estimated. The Monte Carlo simulation of generating the probability various of distribution was performed. The probability distribution of failure block numbers was obtained. With this the fatigue reliability of an element not occurring in failure could be calculated. The failure block number divided by average daily truck traffic remains the life of a day. Fatigue reliability analysis model was carried out for the welding member of cross beam flange and vertical stiffener of steel box bridge using the proposed model. Consequently, a 3.8% difference was observed between the remaining life in the peak analysis method and in the proposed analysis model. The proposed analysis model considered crack closure phase and crack retard.

Recently, regulations on fuel efficiency and $CO_2$ emissions have been reinforced in automobile industries. As a result, many companies make an effort to satisfy these regulations by adapting composite materials to the automobile body as well as its components. In particular, the lower control arm in the suspension system is subjected to heavy loads and is designed to be thick to meet operating loads. Therefore, it is essential for the lower control arm to reduce weight and to secure the durability assessment. In this paper, we conducted structural analysis by performing stress and stiffness analysis under given load conditions through finite element analysis, and verified whether it satisfies the load and stiffness conditions. The inertia relief method is adapted to the process of analysis, and the principal stress is used as a criterion for evaluation. Based on these results, the durability assessment is carried out using the stress-life method.

In this study, a fatigue assessment method for vehicle suspension systems having welded geometries was established under a bending loading condition. For the fatigue life estimation of the actual product's welded joints made of different steels, bending fatigue tests were performed on welded specimens with a simplified shape for obtaining the moment-fatigue-life plot. Further, geometry modeling of the simplified welded specimens was conducted. Results of finite element analysis were used to obtain the stress-fatigue-life plot. The analysis results were also used to calculate the stress concentration factors for notch-factor-based fatigue life estimation. The test results were compared with results of the general notch-factor-based fatigue life estimation for improving fatigue assessment. As a result, it was concluded that both the welded fatigue tests and the notch-factor-based fatigue life estimation are necessary for accurate fatigue assessment.
In recent years, the subject of remaining life assessment has drawn considerable attention in power plants, where various structural components typically operate at high temperature and pressure. Thus a life prediction methodology accounting for high temperature creep fracture is increasingly needed for the components. Critical defects in such structures are generally found in the form of semi-elliptical surface crack, and the analysis of which is consequently an important problem in engineering fracture mechanics. On this background, we first develop an auto mesh generation program for detailed 3-D finite element analyses of axial and circumferential semi-elliptical surface cracks in a piping system. A high temperature creep fracture parameter $C^{\ast}$-integral is obtained from the finite element analyses of generated 3-D models. Post crack growth module is further appended here to calculate the amount of crack growth. Finally the remaining lives of surface cracked pipes for various analytical parameters are assessed using the developed life assessment program.

A stochastic probabilistic model for harbor structures such as rubble-mound breakwater has been formulated by using the generalized Wiener process considering the nonlinearity of damage drift and its nonlinear uncertainty, by which the damage path with real-time can be tracked, the residual useful lifetime at some age can also be analyzed properly. The formulated stochastic model can easily calculate the probability of failure with the passage of time through the probability density function of cumulative damage. In particular, the probability density functions of residual useful lifetime of the existing harbor structures can be derived, which can take into account the current age, its present damage state and the future damage process to be occurred. By using the maximum likelihood method and the least square method together, the involved parameters in the stochastic model can be estimated. In the calibration of the stochastic model presented in this paper, the present results are very well similar with the results of MCS about tracking of the damage paths as well as evaluating of the density functions of the cumulative damage and the residual useful lifetime. MTTF and MRL are also evaluated exactly. Meanwhile, the stochastic probabilistic model has been applied to the rubble-mound breakwater. The related parameters can be estimated by using the experimental data of the cumulative damages of armor units measured as a function of time. The theoretical results about the probability density function of cumulative damage and the probability of failure are very well agreed with MCS results such that the density functions of the cumulative damage tend to move to rightward and the amounts of its uncertainty are increased as the elapsed time goes on. Thus, the probabilities of failure with the elapsed time are also increased sharply. Finally, the behaviors of residual useful lifetime have been investigated with the elapsed age. It is concluded for rubble-mound breakwaters that the probability density functions of residual useful lifetime tends to have a longer tail in the right side rather than the left side because of the gradual increases of cumulative damage of armor units. Therefore, its MRLs are sharply decreased after some age. In this paper, the special attentions are paid to the relationship of MTTF and MRL and the elapsed age of the existing structure. In spite of that the sum of the elapsed age and MRL must be equal to MTTF deterministically, the large difference has been shown as the elapsed age is increased which is due to the uncertainty of cumulative damage to be occurred in the future.
