Application of Aggregate Recycled in-situ for Anti-frost Layer and Lean Concrete Base Course (저노현장파쇄 순환골재의 동상방지층 및 빈배합콘크리트기층 정용성평가)

  • In order to recycle the waste concrete from which the reproductive aggregate should be produced in-situ, the applicability of crushers and recycled aggregates, and the compliance with the specification have been evaluated comprehensively. As a result of them, the properties of recycled aggregate particles were inferior to the natural one because of the adherent mortars on the recycled one, and the mobile impact crusher and the eccentric-mounted cone and jaw were superior to the others for the graded aggregates. In the case of anti-frost layer, the recycled one was easily controlled since the dry densities, contrary to natural one, were not largely changed with the moisture contents. It was found that the lean concrete base course is not influenced by absorption as cement dust grows larger, and the 7-day compressive strengths of lean concrete were higher than 10 MPa regardless of the crushing type.

  • Recently, the use of crushed stones is increased due to the shortage of natural aggregates. In the previous papers of part 1 and 2, we got the conclusions that some of crushed stones have the characteristic of alkali-silica reaction(ASR). And these reactions are influenced by the amount and type of alkali in cement. The purpose of this paper is how to prepare for the prevention against alkali-silica reaction. As a solution of problems, we have conducted the experiments of two methods. One was the replacement of innocuous aggregates instead of reactive aggregates, the other was the addition of various pozzolanic materials. As a result, we found that the expansion by alkali-silica reaction in mortar bar could be effectively decredsed by upper methods.

  • The chemical method and mortar-bar method for identification of the susceptibility to Alkali-Aggregate Reaction (AAR) was established as KS method by referencing the ASTM methods. However, the chemical method requires skilled chemical engineers and aggregates are tested in very severe condition, and on the other hand, the mortar-bar method needs a long time of 3 or 6 months. Judging from this circumstance that the use of crushed stones are increased due to the shortage of natural aggregates, the development and standardization of a new rapid test method is considered essential. The purpose of this paper is to research for the possibility to apply the rapid method, instead of the chemical method and the mortar-bar method with using the several domestic crushed stones.

  • The concrete structure can be easily damaged due to alkali-aggregate reaction. The alkali-aggregate reaction is a reaction between the alkalies(K or Na) in cement and an unstable mineral of the aggregates. There are several test methods to identify alkali reactivity of aggregates. In general, crushed stones are tested by petrographic examination, chemical method and 모르타르 바 method. This study tested alkali-aggregate reactivity of crushed stones that has different rock types such as granitic, volcanic, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Samples are collected from 12 local aggregate production companies. Alkali-reactivity of various rock types was evaluated by using ASTM C 227 and C 1260, and compared the test results of two test methods.

Application of Recycled Aggregate in Job site as Anti-freezing and Lean Concrete Base Materials (현장파쇄 재생골재의 동상방지층 및 빈배합 콘크리트 기층 시험시공연구)

  • The waste concrete produced by the process of the highway construction and management, has been crushed in-situ, and the waste aggregate has been experimentally used for anti-freezing layer and lean concrete. After testing the bearing capacity on anti-freezing layer, it was found that when the waste aggregates mixed with natural sand would be within the required gradations, the layer meets the requirements of limitation and the percentage to passing 2$\sim$20mm sieve increased by 5$\sim$13% because the flimsy mortars on aggregate were re-crushed by vibrated-roller compactor. The compressive strength of lean concrete using recycled aggregate was 71$\sim$85% of the natural coarce aggregate made, but nevertheless the recycled aggregates are applicable to the lean concrete because they largely exceeded the required strength, $57.5kgf/cm^2$.

  • We conducted several different leaching experiments for assessing the potential environmental risk when utilizing recycled concrete for stabilizing bridge pier. The methods include continuous batch leaching test (DIN 38414-S4), availability test (NEN 7341), pH-stat test (CEN/TC 292/WG6) and tank diffusion test (NEN 7345). The concentration ranges vary depending on the testing method. Nearly all the trace elements were low, some elements recording under detection limit. The maximum concentrations for trace elements leached throughout the whole tests are (as mg/L); Cd (0.029), Cu (0.437), Pb (0.14), Ni, Zn (0.95), Hg (0.005). Although the testing methods we used in this study are much more rigorous than other commonly adapted method including TCLP and domestic testing method for solid waste, the trace elemental concentrations are under the criteria for hazardous material set by the TCLP and domestic method. The result seems to suggest that applying the recycled concrete on stream water will be accepatable practice as for as trace elements are concerned. However, the influence of inorganics such as Ca, Mg, Ni and $SO_4^{2-}$ on aquatic ecology should be further examined.

  • To recycle the steel slag as manufactured composite materials of polymer concretes, we used the atomizing method to make round aggregates from steel slag, which is treated as industrial wastes. A round rapid-cooled steel slag was used to replace fine aggregate (river sand) or coarse aggregate (crushed aggregate), depending on the grain size. To examine general physical properties of polymer concrete composites manufactured from rapid-cooled steel slag, the polymer concrete specimen with various proportions depending on the addition ratio of polymer binder and replacement ratio of rapid-cooled steel slag were manufactured. In the result of the tests, the mechanical strength of the specimen made by replacing the optimum amount of rapid-cooled steel slag increased notably (maximum compressive strength 117.1 MPa), and the use of polymer binder, which had the most impact on the production cost of polymer concrete composites, could be remarkably reduced. However, the mechanical strength of the specimen was markedly reduced in hot water resistance test of polymer concrete composite.

Geotechnical Characterization of Artificial Aggregate made from Recycled Resources of Gwangyang Bay Area as a Drainage Material (광양만권 순환자원으로 제조된 배수재용 인공골재의 지반공학적 특성)

  • Recently, recycling of the industrial by-products has been an important issue of the Yeosu bay, where large industrial complex is located. Major industrial by-products which are produced from Yeosu industrial complex area are phosphogypsum and flyash, which are about 82% and 10% of the 1.6 million tons industrial by-products. Moreover since the Yeosu industrial complex is located at seaside, phosphogypsum has been pointed as cause of serious environmental contaminant from the regional society. Therefore recycling study can't be delayed anymore. In this paper, artificial aggregate was manufactured by non-sintering process from industrial byproducts - e.g., phosphogypsum and slag - as a geotechnical drainage material. To show the feasibility of the artificial aggregate as a geotechnical drainage material, geotechnical experiments including particle size analysis, permeability test, and large scale direct shear test were carried out. Test results show that the permeability of the artificial aggregates range from $6.94{\times}10^{-1}cm/sec$ to $8.86{\times}10^{-1}cm/sec$, which is much larger value than those are required for the drainage material from the construction specification in Korea, and the friction angle of the artificial aggregate is as large as that of sand in water immersion conditions. From the test results, it was concluded that artificial aggregate made from industrial by-products can be used successfully as a geotechnical drainage material.

Mechanical Properties of Porous Concrete For Pavement Using Recycled Aggregate and Polymer (재생골재와 폴리머를 이용한 포장용 포러스 콘크리트의 역학적 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to utilize recycled concrete aggregates as permeable pavement materials. This study evaluates mechanical properties and durability of porous concrete depending on mixing rates of recycled aggregates and polyme. As a result, void ratio and permeability coefficient of porous concrete for pavement increased a little as mixing rate of recycled aggregates increased. Void ratio and permeability coefficient increased a lot as mixing rate of polymer increased. As polymer was mixed $20\%$, national regulation of permeable concrete for pavement($8\%$ and 0.01cm/sec) was met. Compressive strength and flexural strength decreased as mixing rate of recycled aggregates increased but they increased a lot as mixing rate of polymer increased. Even when recycled aggregates were mixed $75\%\;with\;10\%$ polymer mixed, national regulation of pavement concrete(18MPa and 4.5MPa) was met. In addition, regarding sliding resistance, BPN increased as mixing rate of recycled aggregates increased. But BPN decreased as polymer was mixed. Compared to crushed stone aggregates, abrasion resistance and freeze-thaw resistance decreased as mixing rate of recycled aggregates Increased. When polymer was mixed, abrasion resistance and freeze-thaw resistance improved remarkably. Compared to non-mixture, $10\%$ mixture of polymer improved abrasion resistance and freeze-thaw resistance about $8.6\%$ and 3.8times respectively.
