  • As speed and capacity of optical communication system increase dramatically, polarization-mode-dispersion compensation(PMDC) becomes a hot issue in these days. In this paper, we introduce a new state-of-polarization (SOP) tracking algorithm that can be used in a PMDC system. The new SOP tracking algorithm is also based on optical heterodyne coherent detection technique like the previous algorithm that we have reported before. However, unlike the previous algorithm, the new algorithm requires only three times of measurement in any circumstances to find the exact SOP information so that it can effectively be applied to PMDC system where very fast and stable operation is indispensible.

  • In H.264/AVC decoder, intra predictor, motion compensator, and deblocking filter need to read reference images in external frame memory in decoding process. They read external frame memory very frequently, which lowers system operation speed and increases power consumption. This paper proposes a intra predictor integrated with motion compensator without external frame memory. It achieves power reduction and memory bandwidth minimization by exploiting data reuse of common and repetitive pixels. The proposed infra predictor achieves more than $45%\;{\sim}\;75%$ cycle time reduction compared with conventional intra predictors.

  • Motion compensation by affine transform has been proposed as a solution to the artifact problems in very low bit rate video coding and a HMA(Hexagoanl Matching Algorithm) has been proposed for refine motions estimation. When dividing images with an affine transform, as image objects do not necessarily conform to triangle patterns. In this paper we propose a method that first divides an image into triangular patches according to its edge information and then further divides the image into more detailed triangular patches where more complicated edge information occurs. We image propose a PMA(Polygona Matching Algorithm) for refine motion estimation because of the different triangle pattern types of neighboring blocks and its performance is compared with H.263.

  • In this paper, we proposed the compensation structures for the enhanced directivity of CPW(Coplanar waveguide) directional couplers with finite-extent backed conductor. The proposed compensation structures are. realized by expanding the slot width between signal line and ground plane in center region of couplers. The CPW couplers with expanded slot have the same phase velocity for even and odd mode because of added inductance and changed capacitance appropriately, so the enhanced directivity is accomplished. The designed CPW directional couplers have good directivity and matching characteristic at center frequency in simulation and measurement.

  • An optical coherent system is considered for the next-generation optical access networks in enhancing the data rate and transmission distance. In this system, however, I/Q amplitude imbalance may occur at several parts of the system, leading to serious performance degradation. Asymmetric structure of a coherent receiver at the location of subscriber is one of the sources of I/Q imbalance. Therefore, this imbalance parameters must be removed or compensated to secure the transmission performance. In this paper, the source of I/Q amplitude imbalance is analyzed, and then the way to compensate for the imbalance at the receiver side is suggested. Performance after the compensation is estimated using simulation.

  • This paper proposes an optical transmission link design method based on an optimum compensation scheme using dispersion compensating fiber (DCF), so that high-speed long-distance optical transmission would be possible over the conventional standard single mode fiber (SMF) link. The proposed design method provides the maximized transmission distances according to the signal speeds, where the amplifier spacing and repeater spacing are optimized wit respect to self-phase modulation(SPM) due to fiber nonlinearity and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noises caused by optical amplifies. It is also shown that there exists an optimum input signal power range balancing the effects of ASE noise and SPM for the given amplifier spacing and repeater spacing.

  • To overcome the limit of the time-domain based channel estimation caused by the ADC speed, this paper present a new BPM-UWB receiver where the channel estimations and the compensations are digitally performed in the frequency domain. We theoretically show that the channel estimation can be accomplished by exploiting the periodicity of a training sequence consisting of finite number of pulses. We also present the digital receiver structure to implement the proposed system and derive its BER performances. Through computer simulations, we show the proposed receiver can dramatically improve the BER performances due to the incorporation of the estimated channel frequency response.

  • Maximum efficiency control scheme in a stator flux-oriented induction motor drive is proposed for minimizing input dc power. Flux level is decreased in steps for searching the minimum input dc power. In addition, Torque equation, slip angular frequency, and decoupling compensation current considering iron loss resistance is used. Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This paper describes a novel flux calculator for the estimation of real rotor flux angle which is indispensable to the field oriented control of induction motors. A pure integrator is used to estimate the real rotor flux precisely from voltage and current information. The proposed flux calculator adopts the new drift compensation method to overcome the drift problem of pure integrator. The motor speed is calculated using estimated flux angle and estimated slip frequency. The performance of this approach is verified through the experiment. The experimental results shows stable operation of proposed system even below 1/100 of rated speed.
