  • The hydrogen embrittlement of metallic materials is an important issue from the viewpoint of structural integrity. In this regard, the estimation of mechanical properties and fracture toughness under hydrogen conditions provides very important data. This study provides an experimental validation of the approach for simulating the small punch of Inconel 617 using finite element damage analysis, as recently proposed by the authors, and applies an inverse method for the determination of the constitutive tensile behavior of materials. The mechanical properties obtained from the inverse method are compared with those obtained from the tensile test and validated. The mechanical properties and fracture toughness are predicted by using the inverse method and finite element damage analysis.

  • The impact strength of material is considered the most important design factor for small and light products. Impact strength is a unique material property, thus the impact strength should not depend upon the geometry of specimen. However it varies according to specimen thickness, notching method, and notch shape. In this study, the variations of impact strength have been investigated according to thickness, notch shape, and notching method of specimen. Engineering plastics such as PC, ABS and POM have been used in this study. Experimental results showed impact strength increased as thickness decreasesd. PC showed the highest increment of impact strength when the thickness was thin. Fractured section of PC showed brittle fracture behavior when the specimen was thick. However it showed ductile fracture behavior when it was thin. The impact strength of in-mold notched specimen showed higher than that of milling notched specimen. PC showed the highest notch sensitivity among the materials used in this experiment.

  • Development of a small scale aircraft has been carried out for the BASA(Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement) program in Korea. This aircraft adopted all the composite structures for environmental friendly by low fuel consumption due to its lightness behavior. However the composite structure has s disadvantage which is very weak against impact due to foreign object damages. Therefore the aim of this study is focusing on the damage evaluation and repair techniques of the aircraft composite structure. The damages of composite laminates including the carbon/epoxy UD laminate and the carbon/epoxy fabric face sheets-honeycomb core sandwich laminate were simulated by a drop weight type impact test equipment and the damaged specimen were repaired using the external patch repair method after removing damaged area. The compressive strength test and analysis results after repairing the impact damaged specimens were compared with the compressive strength test and analysis results of undamaged specimens and impact damaged specimens. Finally, the strength recovery capability by repairing were investigated.

  • 3D integration technology has been a major focus of the next generation of IC industries. In this study Si wafer ultra-thinning has been investigated especially for the effect of ultra-thinning on the silicon surface. Wafers were grinded down to $30{\mu}m\;or\;50{\mu}m$ thickness and then grinded only samples were compared with surface treated samples in terms of surface roughness, surface damages, and hardness. Dry polishing or wet etching treatment has been applied as a surface treatment. Surface treated samples definitely showed much less surface damages and better roughness. However, ultra-thinned Si samples have the almost same hardness as a bulk Si wafer.

  • The change of material J-R (J-T) curve with crack extension and J-calculation method was investigated to give experimental and analytical method for reliable J-R (J-T) curve, which was adapted recently as a tool for instability analysis of Nuclear Pressure Vessel. Experiments were carried out by Single Specimen Unloading Compliance Method using 1/2"T, Compact-Tension Type fracture mechanic specimens which were the same size and material as domestic nuclear pressure vessel material surveillance specimens. The results revealed that crack extension up to 25~30% of initial uncracked ligament and JD (Deformation theory J) calculation method, currently being used in NUREG-0744, could give rather reliable material J-R (J-T) curve than the small crack extension and JM (Modified J) calculation method. But as JM results more or less higher J at instability, the application of JM should be considered regarding to the problem of power plant availability.lity.

  • Purpose: An experimental study was conducted on the sand samples for the size effect of the test specimens, one of the problems of the direct shear test. Method: Jumunjin standard sand, a representative sand of Korea, was used as sand sample. The large direct shear test was performed to analyze the shear strength at 50%, 60%, 70%, and 80% relative density, and then the comparative results were compared with the test results of the small direct shear test. Result: It was analyzed that the internal friction angle of the small shear tester tended to be relatively large in the dense region. It was analyzed that the results of the large shear tester tend to be relatively large in the region of medium relative density. Conclusion: The size effect on the samples in the direct shear test on sandy soil was analyzed to be relatively small.

  • The direct current potential drop (DCPD) method and the unloading compliance (UC) method with a crack opening displacement gauge were applied simultaneously to the Zr-2.5Nb curved compact tension (CCT) specimens to determine which of the two methods can precisely determine the crack initiation point and hence the crack length for evaluation of their fracture toughness. The DCPD method detected the crack initiation at a smaller load-line displacement compared to the UC method. As a verification, a direct observation of the fracture surfaces on the curved compact tension specimens was made on the CCT specimens experiencing either 0.8 to 1.0 mm load line displacement or various loads from $50\%\;to\;80\%$ of the maximum peak load, or $P_{max}$. The DCPD method is concluded to be more precise in determining the crack initiation and fracture toughness, J in Zr-2.5Nb CCT specimens than the UC method.

  • Recently, development of a small aircraft has been carried out for the BASA(Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement) program in Korea. This aircraft adopted all composite structures for environmental friendly by low fuel consumption due to its lightness behavior. However the composite structure has disadvantage which is very weak against impact damages. Therefore, damage allowable design of aircraft structure must be performed considering compressive fracture strength. This point is very important for certification of composite structure aircraft. In this paper, it is performed the research on damage tolerance of thick laminate adopting aircraft structure. The damage tolerance of three different types of thick laminates such as no damage, open hole and impact damage is evaluated under compression loading.

  • With increasing demand for fast and reliable, yet economical data storage devices, the role of optical disk technology is becoming more important. In recent years, advanced laser technology combined with new materials has given the competitive edge over the traditional magnetic memory devices both in memory capacity and reliability of data retrieval. Continuing effort is being put into developing smaller and more complex structures for optical disks to increase their memory density. Characterization of such multilayered structure requires not only high spatial resolution for observation but also laborious specimen preparation. In this paper, the method of preparing optical disk specimens for TEM characterization is described in detail. The microstructural features in optical disks observed by TEM are also discussed.
