Purpose: The present study was conducted to compare any difference caused by pigmentation in the centrations and movement patterns on the cornea between circle and soft contact lens with identical material and parameters during lens wearing. Methods: Soft and circle contact lenses with identical material and parameters were applied to twenty eyes with normal tear volume for 3 hrs a day during a total of 5 days and then their lens centrations, the moving distances and rotations by repeat blinking were compared. Results: The lens centration beyond the fitting criteria was shown in initial wears of both soft contact lens and circle contact lens. However, the centration of soft contact lens was changed to the pupil center for being suitable to the fitting criteria with longer wearing time. On the other hand, the decentration of circle contact lens in the horizontal direction was still presented even with longer wearing time. The moving distances of soft contact lens and circle contact lens decreased with the expand of lens wearing but were not significantly different between total wearing period and daily wearing time. The rotation of circle contact lens by repeat blinking was significantly different from that of soft contact lens even when the wearing period was extended. Conclusions: We revealed that the lens centration and movement of circle contact lens on cornea were different from those of regular soft contact lens resulting in bigger difference with the expand of wearing period in the study.

Purpose: In the study, the change of protein and lipid deposits on soft contact lens by drinking was investigated. Methods: Fifty male subjects wearing soft contact lens were surveyed whether they felt any discomfort induced by drinking or not. Further, 32 male subjects who has no ocular disease drank 190 mL alcohol. The protein and lipid deposits on soft contact lens (etafilcon A material) of subjects were measured after 4 hours later and compared with those of non-drinking subject. Results: When subjects drink alcohol with soft contact lens on, 58% of subjects answered they experienced the change of lens awareness such as stiffness, blurry sight, dryness and so on. The protein deposit on soft contact lens increased an average of $59.3{\mu}g/lens$ by drinking and the case of more than double in protein deposit was reached in 9 eyes. However, the protein deposited on soft contact lens was lysozyme which was unchanged by drinking. The amounts of cholesterol and methyl oleate after drinking were 85.5% (p=0.25) and 52.6% (p=0.002) of non-drinking's indicating some change of lipid deposit on soft contact lens by drinking. Conclusions: The results showed the composition of protein and lipid deposited on soft contact lens was changed due to drinking. Thus, it is suggested that wearing soft contact lens when drinking might be one of the reasons to feel discomfort.
Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the changes of lens morphology and tear stability during wearing soft contact lenses (SCLs) which were kept in drying condition like dry eye or became to be dried due to heedless care. Method: SCLs having different water content, thickness or material were rehydrated after being dehydrated artificially 2 or 4 times, and estimated their diameter and radius. Furthermore, the changes of tear film break-up time (TBUT) during SCL wearing were also measured. Result: Due to the dryness, the diameter of both 70% water content SCL and 59% water content SCL decreased, but the decrement was larger in 59% water content SCL. The more 59% water content SCL was dehydrated, the more its radius changed. However, the radius of 70% water content SCL did not change by 2 times dehydration and increased greatly by 4 times dehydration. The reduction of diameter of -1.00 D SCL was greater than that of -9.00 D SCL. Moreover, the radius of -1.00 D SCL increased depending on the frequency of dehydration but that of -9.00 D SCL did not changed. The diameter and radius changes of lotrafilcon B, silicone hydrogel lens, were less than those of hilafilcon B, copolymer of HEMA and N-vinyl pyrrolidone. TBUT during wearing SCLs decreased by wearing dehydrated SCLs. Conclusion: The diameter and radius of dehydrated SCLs as well as TBUT during wearing them were changed in spite of rehydration, which would be the important cause of uncomfortable feeling when people wore dehydrated SCL. The changes of SCL morphology and TBUT differed according to the water content, lens thickness and material.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to figure out how the characteristics of soft contact lens materials and pigmentation affect the adherence of C. albicans on soft contact lenses pre-deposited with tear constituents. Methods: The adherent number of C. albicans on clear soft contact lenses (hereinafter clear lenses) and circle soft contact lenses (hereinafter circle lenses) made of etafilcon A, hilaiflcon B and nelfilcon A, respectively, was measured before and after the deposition of artificial tear. Also, bacteria adherence on lenses were observed by a scanning electron microscope. Results: Adherence of C. albicans was significantly different according to lens materials. The amount of adsorption was not different between clear lenses and circle lenses made of etafilcon A however, the number of bacteria absorption was bigger in hilafilcon B and nelfilcon A lenses. More absorption of C. albicans was found in the non-pigmented central area compared the pigmented area, and non-pigmented peripheral area has more bacterial absorption than non-pigmented central area. The number of C. albicans decreased in the case that tear protein was pre-deposited. The maintenance of antibacterial activity against C. albicans was different according to lens materials thus, etafilcon A has the longest period of its maintenance. Conclusions: It was revealed that the number of C. albicans was different according to the characteristics of lens materials, pigmentation or non-pigmentation, the pigmented area of soft contact lenses. Thus, it is suggested that the management method should be different according to the adsorption characteristics of C. albicans.

The aim of the study was to investigate the diameter and base curve changes of soft contact lens by protein deposition. Soft contact lenses were soaked in artificial tear or protein solution which had the same composition with tear for 2min, 10min, 30min, 1hr, 3hr, 6hr, 12hr, and 24hr. Diameter and base curve changes of soft contact lenses were examined by using the high speed camera(Fastcam ultima 1024). The longer the soaking time of soft contact lenses in the artificial tear, the diameter and base curve changes of soft contact lenses was more increased. In the case of soft contact lenses adsorbed only protein, the similar pattern was shown and the diameter and base curve were decreased. However, the influence of calcium ion was found to be less than that of protein. These results suggest that the tear protein causes the diameter and base curve decrease of soft contact lens, which might be related to the discomfort after soft contact lens wearing.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the cause of discomfort come from wearing of soft contact lens(SCL) exposed to fundamental cosmetics, After SCLs were smeared with skin lotion, essence lotion or nutritional cream, they were exposed to artificial tear for 7 days, and then changes of the adhered protein amount, the transmission of visible light, the wettability and the base curve were estimated. The amount of protein adhered to SCLs were increased 3 times by being exposed to fundamental cosmetics. Moreover, the transmission of visible light of SCL exposed to both nutritional cream and artificial tear was 92.8%, which was 4.7% lower than SCL exposed only to artificial tear. By being exposed to skin lotion, essence lotion or nutritional cream, the contact angle of SCLs were increased up to $7.1^{\circ}$, $7.0^{\circ}$ or $5.7^{\circ}$ and the base curve of SCLs were decreased to 3.2%, 5.1% or 8.3%, respectively.
This study investigated the status of soft contact lens wear in college students. The results were as follows: 1. The most prevalent age of initial contact lens wear was 19 years or 20 years, with an age distribution in females from as early as 10 years to 20 years. 2. For almost all subjects, the test clinic for the contact lens wear assessment and purchase of the contact lenses was an optical shop. 3. The main advantage for most male subjects was use for sports, whereas most female subjects used contact lenses for cosmetic reasons. 4. The most common side-effects experienced due to contact lens wear were red eye, foreign body sensation, and eye pain. 5. The most frequently reported eye disease caused by contact lens wear was conjunctivitis, with only few subjects experiencing keratitis. 6. Following treatment for the side effects of contact lens wear, most subjects hoped to re-use the previous contact lenses, some subjects wanted to change to new contact lenses, and others subjects refused further contact lens wear.
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to see how wearing either a SCL or a C-SCL effected the dryness of a person's eye depending on how long they wear either type of lens. Methods: This study was carried out on 52 subjects (104 eyes) who were all in their twenties and had previously experienced wearing contact lenses. All of these subjects were required to wear either a SCL or a C-SCL, which were made out of the same material, for three months. Contents such as the McMonnies Questionnaire survey, the blinking rate per min. and the Noninvasive tear break-up time test (NIBUT) were later conducted on the subjects for this study. Results: According to the results of the McMonnies Questionnaire, it was concluded that the longer the subject wore the SCL and C-SCL, the value of the measurements gradually increased. On the other hand, the results from the NIBUT concluded that the longer the subject wore the SCL, the value of the measurements eventually decreased. However, according to the measurements of the blink rate test, it was concluded that neither results had a significant change. Conclusions: It was concluded that long-term wearing of SCL and C-SCL could be the cause of the induction and progression of dry eyes.
Purpose: The cleaning effect of protein deposit and the change of contact lens parameters by ultrasonic cleaner for eye glasses on the soft contact lenses were investigated. Methods: Etafilcon A contact lenses contaminated with protein, was ultrasonicated by ultrasonic cleaner for eye glasses and for the control group, spoiled contact lenses were cleaned by multi-purpose solution. The remaining protein deposits on the contact lenses were determined after extraction and the changes of overall diameter, base curve, center thickness power, and water contents on contact lenses were measured and surfaces of contact lenses were observed by scanning electron microscope. Results: The cleaning efficacies of multi-purpose solution on protein deposited etafilcon A contact lenses were 6.08%, and 23.73~33.92% in the group of ultrasonic cleaner for eye glasses with multi-purpose solution and 0~12.99% in the group of ultrasonic clear for contact lens with multipurpose solution depending on the treatment time. The changes of parameters and surface on contact lenses by ultrasonication were not observed. Conclusions: Ultrasonic cleaner for eye glasses can be used to eliminate protein deposits for the diagnostic soft contact lens in the office since it was effective to eliminate protein deposits and not caused change of parameters on soft contact lenses.

Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the actual condition of caring soft contact lens cases and the change in contamination level of lens cases by wearing and storage period of soft contact lens. Methods: The actual condition of caring soft lens cases was surveyed with sixty-three of contact lens wearers. Soft contact lenses were worn for 1, 3, 7 and 14 days, and the lenses were separately stored in 12 lens cases for 1, 3 and 7 days. The contamination level of lens cases was determined by counting the numbers of microorganisms, gram negative bacteria and fungi. Results: Only 14% of survey answerers cleaned their lens cases with a brush, rinsed and dried them upside down before next usage of lens case when those lenses were kept for a long time. Furthermore, 54% of total answerers just kept soft contact lens in the case without changing the multipurpose solution. Microorganisms, gram negative bacteria and fungi were detected in lens cases even when soft contact lens were kept for 1 day in the lens case after wearing for 1 day and cleaning it with multipurpose solution. The numbers of microorganisms, gram negative bacteria and fungi in lens cases increased with storage periods of soft contact lens, and also contamination level of lens cases was increased in accordance with wearing period of lens. In the lens cases without changing multipurpose solution, the numbers of microorganisms, gram negative bacteria and fungi increased with storage period of lens with statistical significance. Conclusions: This study showed that lens wearers' concerns on caring contact lens case were not satisfactory. As the result, the contamination of lens cases was related to increase of lens wearing and storage periods suggesting that the proper instruction and education for lens wearers are required.
