  • The concern of Software Product Line(SPL) engineering is spreading widely because the program or product developers are able to satisfy the customer's demands quickly and give a way to handle maintenance efficiently. SPL is a reuse paradigm that reuse common parts and adopts variable parts optionally to form a differentiated product by analyzing domains. Purposes of this paper are to design an architecture which has a dynamic reconfiguration function and to develop basic components which are the basic unit of reconfiguration to raise the reuse level of the guided weapon system using the SPL. Initially we design an architecture and define basic components for developing a dynamic reconfigurable components based on SPL. Then we develop the composer for physical components and behavior components referenced by behavior models of OneSAF.

  • Feature-oriented software product line engineering is to develop various products by developing product line core assets in terms of features and composing those features. However, the developed product may not behave correctly if the feature interaction problem has not be properly taken into account during the feature composition. This paper proposes techniques for identifying and modularizing undesirable feature interactions effectively. The scientific calculator product line is used for evaluating the applicability of the proposed method.

  • Traceability targets provision of information to stakeholders required for analyzing impacts among artifacts due to changes. Unlike single product development, in software product line developing the family of products the complexity of maintaining and managing traceability between two life cycles, domain and application engineering is so high. Accordingly, variability traceability management approach centred on orthogonal variability model that manages variability separated from development artifacts has been conceptually proposed, but its efficiency has not verified yet. This paper verifies whether orthogonal variability model based traceability can provide required traceability through an example. As the results, the OVM-based variability tracing method supports well to narrow down artifacts affected by the changes. However, the method does not support tracing the exact artifacts or exact part of an artifact affected by the change.

  • The feature models are widely used to model the commonalities and variabilities among the products in the domain engineering phase of software product line developments. The findings and corrections of the errors or consistencies in the feature models are essential to the successful software product line engineering. The aids of the automated tools are needed to perform the validation of the feature models effectively. This paper describes the approach based on JESS rule-base system to validate the feature models and proposes the feature model validation tool using this approach. The tool of this paper validates the feature models in real-time when modeling the feature models. Then it provides the information on existence of errors and the explanations on causes of those errors, which allows the feature modeler to create the error-free feature models. This attempt to validate the feature model using the rule-based system is supposed to be the first time in this research field.

  • Variability of the software product line that differentiates member products within a product line must be described with precise meaning and visualized so as easy to select. Moreover, it should be easy to manage. Variability description approaches can largely be divided into two approaches, integrated variability description approach and orthogonal variability description approach. Orthogonal Variability Description Language (OVDL) was developed for clear and precise description of variability without ambiguity. This paper validates the variability description capability of OVDL by translating the variability models of Inter-Working Function (IWF) product line described by using Orthogonal Variability Model (OVM) notations into variability descriptions in OVDL.

  • The aim of the study is to introduce a software reuse technique into a generalized agile process for a reuse of a product backlog item. The software engineering community has made some efforts to integrate software reuse and agile methods. Most studies have emphasized the use of agile practices in software product line engineering, whereas reuse in agile methods has received little focus. Nevertheless, the activities and artifacts that provided by an agile method exhibit characteristics that promote reuse. In this paper, we identify catalytic activities and characteristics that promote reuse in a generalized agile process, and we suggest a reuse technique for a product backlog item. Based on our results, we integrate a backlog factoring technique into a generalized agile process for reuse. In addition, we apply the proposed technique and demonstrate a prototype of backlog item reuse in agile methods for a restaurant chain application.

  • The Software Product Line (SPL) engineering is one of the most promising software development paradigms. With Feature-Oriented Reuse Method (FORM), reusable and flexible components can be built to aid the delivery of various software products such as mobile phone and digital TV applications based on commonalities and variabilities identified during Feature modeling. Model Driven Architecture (MDA) is also an emerging technology which supports developing software products to work on different platforms with platform independent models (PIM). Combining advantages of these two approaches is helpful to build a group of software products which share common Features while working on various platforms. As first step to combine FORM with MDA, we extend UML2.0 with profiles by which FORM architectures and parameterized Statecharts can be modeled. Secondly, we provide rules to examine whether Features are allocated at positions of elements of Statecharts consistently between a Feature model and a parameterized Statechart. Some rules are designed to check the consistency between FORM architectures and parameterized Statecharts. A case study on an elevator control system is provided to demonstrate the feasibility of our modeling approach and consistency checking rules.

  • Product-line engineering is a dreaming goal in software engineering research. Unfortunately, the current underlying technologies do not seem to be still not much matured enough to make it viable in the industry. Based on our experiences in working on mobile telephony systems over 3 years, now we are in the course of developing an approach to product-line engineering for mobile telephony system software. In this paper, the experiences are shared together with our research motivation and idea. Consequently, we propose an approach to building and maintaining telephony application logics from the perspective of scenes. As a Domain-Specific Language(DSL), Menu Navigation Viewpoint(MNV) DSL is designed to deal with the problem domain of telephony applications. The functional requirements on how a set of telephony application logics are configured can be so various depending on manufacturer, product concept, service carrier, and so on. However, there is a commonality that all of the currently used telephony application logics can be generally described from the point of user's view, with a set of functional features that can be combinatorially synthesized from typical telephony services(i.e. voice/video telephony, CBS/SMS/MMS, address book, data connection, camera/multimedia, web browsing, etc.), and their possible connectivity. MNV DSL description acts as a backbone software architecture based on which the other types of telephony application logics are placed and aligned to work together globally.
