  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to identify the effects of problem based learning (PBL) combined with simulation on the basic nursing competency of nursing students. Method: A pretest-posttest design with a nonequivalent control group was used to examine the effects of problem based learning combined with simulation for 9 weeks in a group of 283 nursing students. The PBL group of 141 students participated in PBL classes with simulation, 4 hours a week for 9 weeks compared to control group of 142 students who received the usual fundamental nursing class. Results: The group that had PBL with simulation showed significant increases in problem solving and self-directed learning competency, although there were no significant changes in communication competency as compared to the control group. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate that PBL with simulation for nursing students may increase problem solving and self-directed learning competency and suggest that utilizing this teaching-learning method may be beneficial as an effective nursing education strategy.

  • In this study we reviewed the backgrounds, main claims, and teaching and learning of STEAM education, and analysed STEAM education on the viewpoint of didactics of mathematics. The core competences of STEAM are creativity, communication, convergence, and caring. We found that the theoretical background of caring among these competences is relatively very weak, and the main principles for teaching and learing are mainly included the theories of didactics of mathematics and of creativity. We need to approach very carefully and progressively to creativity education through STEAM, and also need to study on the background of the mathematical creativity.

Methods: This study employs a descriptive research, method and was conducted from April 20 to May 19, 2022, with students from three nursing colleges in Korea. The collected data were analyzed by frequency and percentage, independent t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. All analyzes were conducted using IBM SPSS 22.0. Results: The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that the regression model was significant (F=17.30, p<.001) and that communication skills (β=.22, p=.001), self-leadership (β=.31, p<.001), patient safety education experience (β=.15, p=.009), and subjects for credit (β=.15, p=.006) explained 28.0% of nursing students' patient safety competency. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop a self-leadership and communication skills improvement program and to organize rgular courses safety education subjects to improve the patient safety competency of nursing students.

  • This study was conducted with the aim of exploring ways to more effectively manage related courses by checking the educational effects of the operation of engineering liberal arts courses operated for the development of communication skills of engineering students by detailed factors of communication skills. To achieve the purpose of the study, literature review and survey methodologies were used. A survey was conducted before and after class targeting four class students of the engineering college of D University in Gyeonggi-do. As a result of comparing the results of the pre-test before class through this class and the results of the post-test conducted at the end of the class, it was confirmed that speaking ability, reading ability, and communication ability were improved at a statistically significant level. In addition, as a result of analyzing differences in communication competencies for each individual variable, it was found that there were statistically significant differences according to gender, students' major field, and grade. Based on such research results, several educational proposals were presented to increase the effectiveness of the management of courses operated to develop communication skills.

  • This study aims to investigate how flipped learning-based socioscientific issue instruction (FL-SSI instruction) affected middle school students' key competencies and character development. Traditional classrooms are constrained in terms of time and resources for exploring the issues and making decision on SSI. To address these concerns, we designed and implemented an SSI instruction adopting flipped learning. Seventy-three 8th graders participated in an SSI program on four topics for over 12 class periods. Two questionnaires were used as a main data source to measure students' key competencies and character development before and after the SSI instruction. In addition, student responses and shared experience from focus group interviews after the instruction were collected and analyzed. The results indicate that the students significantly improved their key competencies and experienced character development after the SSI instruction. The students presented statistically significant improvement in the key competencies (i.e., collaboration, information and technology, critical thinking and problem-solving, and communication skills) and in two out of three factors in character and values as global citizens (social and moral compassion, and socio-scientific accountability). Interview data supports the quantitative results indicating that SSI instruction with a flipped learning strategy provided students in-depth and rich learning opportunities. The students responded that watching web-based videos prior to class enabled them to deeply understand the issue and actively engage in discussion and debate once class began. Furthermore, the resulting gains in available class time deriving from a flipped learning approach allowed the students to examine the issue from diverse perspectives.
