The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of stabilization for army firing range soil highly contaminated with Pb (total Pb: 29,000 mg/kg) using calcined waste oyster shells. The calcination was conducted to activate quicklime from calcite. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of calcination, both natural oyster shells (NOS) and calcined oyster shells (COS) were applied to the Pb contaminated soil. Stabilization was conducted by mixing the contaminated soil with oyster shell media at 5-20 wt% and cured for 28 days. Following 28 days of curing, Pb leachability was measured based on the Korean Standard Test method (0.1 N HCl extraction). The treatment results showed that the COS treatment outperformed the NOS treatment. All of the NOS treatments failed to meet the Korean warning standard of 100 mg/kg. However, the Pb concentrations were significantly reduced to 47 mg/kg and 3 mg/kg upon 15 wt% and 20 wt% COS treatments, respectively which passed the Korean warning standard. Moreover, -#20 mesh materials were more effective than the -#10 mesh materials in effectively reducing Pb leachability. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) results indicated that Pb immobilization was strongly linked to Al and Si.

In this study, pyrolyzed oyster shells at a low temperature ($350^{\circ}C$) were applied for a mesocosm experiment to confirm resulting changes in the properties of sediment. After creating a covering of oyster shells, an increase in ORP and decrease in ammonia in the overlying water was observed in an experimental case. The decrease of TOC in this experiment was due to the dilution of organic matter due to the addition of inorganic matter (pyrolyzed oyster shells). The decrease in the concentration of AVS was observed due to the adsorption of AVS by the surface of the oyster shells. From the results obtained in this experiment, it has been concluded that pyrolyzed oyster shells at a low temperature can be used for remediation of polluted sediment.
This research aims to examination the material characteristics changes of the ancient clay depending to firing temperature and to verify the firing temperature of the Joseon potteries from the Yongam site in Ssangyongdong of Cheonan, Korea. To this study, we conducted a firing experiments using the ancient clay that was verified raw material of the Joseon potteries from the study area in the temperature range from 500 to $1,200^{\circ}C$. The yellowish tint, the reddish tint and the specific gravity of firing samples increase according to firing temperature rise. But the absorption ratio and the porosity decreased under same firing temperature range. The soft potteries from the Yongam site has similar material characteristics with the fired samples at 800 to $950^{\circ}C$. And the hard potteries from the Yongam site bears the same relation to the fired samples at about $1,100^{\circ}C$. This result is considerably signification for the interpretation of firing temperature. The geochemical characteristics of the original clay according to the firing experiments, on the other hand, is not affected of temperature in this study.

Soil plasticity models for cyclic and dynamic loads are essential in non-linear numerical analysis of geotechnical structures. While a single yield surface model shows a linear behavior for cyclic loads, J2-bounding surface plasticity model with zero elastic region can effectively simulate a nonlinearity of the ground response with the same material properties. The radius of the yield surface inside the boundary surface converged to 0 to make the elastic region disappear, and plastic hardening modulus and dilatancy define plastic strain increment. This paper presents the stress-strain incremental equation of the developed model, and derives plastic hardening modulus for the hyperbolic model. The comparative analyses of the triaxial compression test and the shallow foundation under the cyclic load can show stable numerical convergence, consistency with the theoretical solution, and hysteresis behavior. In addition, plastic hardening modulus for the modified hyperbolic function is presented, and a methodology to estimate model variables conforming 1D equivalent linear model is proposed for numerical modeling of the multi-dimensional behavior of the ground.

Concrete guide rail and median barrier are an attached RC member, however they are vulnerable to cracking due to slip form construction and large surface of member. In this study, causes and pattern of cracking are analyzed through assessment and NDT (Non-Destructive Technique) evaluation for concrete guide rail and median barrier on highway structure. For this work, analysis on drying shrinkage and hydration heat are performed considering installation period, and plastic shrinkage is also analyzed considering their environmental conditions. From the evaluation, plastic settlement around steel location, drying/ plastic shrinkage, and aggregate segregation are inferred to be the main causes of cracking in the structures. The crack causes and patterns are schematized and techniques of crack-control are suggested. Furthermore concrete guide rail/ median barrier in the bridge on the sea are vulnerable to cracking at early age so that special attentions should be paid at the stages of material selection and construction.
Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technique method using a resonance frequency mode was carried out for woodceramics made by different carbonizing temperature (600, 800, 1000, $1200^{\circ}C$) for Broussonetia kazinoki Sieb. Dynamic modulus of elasticity increased with increasing carbonizing temperature. There was a close relationship of dynamic modulus of elasticity and static bending modulus of elasticity to MOR. Therefore, the dynamic modulus of elasticity using resonance frequency mode is useful as a nondestructive evaluation method for predicting the MOR of woodceramics made by different carbonizing temperature for B. kazinoki Sieb.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of calcinated calcium (CC) alone or combination with heat treatment on storage quality and microbial growth in fresh-cut broccoli. Fresh broccoli samples were cut into small pieces and washed in normal tap water (TW), $50{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ chlorinated water (pH 6.5), $1.5g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ CC, heat treatment in TW at $45^{\circ}C$, and CC dissolved in TW at $45^{\circ}C$ for 2 minutes separately. Samples were then packaged in $50{\mu}m$ polyethylene bags and stored at $5^{\circ}C$. Results revealed that like $50{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ chlorine, washing in CC at normal water temperature was effective in reducing microbial population in fresh-cut broccoli samples. Washing with CC combined with heat treatment increased an electrical conductivity of fresh-cut broccoli. Combined heat treatments with TW and CC reduced aerobic plate count on fresh-cut broccoli, only in initial period of storage. But, later on heat treatment induced injury of fresh-cut broccoli resulting more microbial population compared to non heat treatment. However, samples treated with CC alone had good quality with low off-odor at the end of storage. Results suggest that CC, an environment-friendly sanitizer could be an alternative to chlorinated water for washing of fresh-cut broccoli without affecting sensorial quality.

The calcination of oyster shells have been studied as the possible substitute for the limestone used as an absorbent of $SO_2$ gas. However, since pure shells can not be used in calcination process, some impurities are contained and the changes in the characteristics of the calcination products are expected. In this study, the surface characteristics of the calcination products are investigated by mineralogical analysis according to the contents of NaCl, which can be derived from sea water, and sediments on the surface of the shell as impurities. The marine sediments on the shells were mainly composed of quartz, albite, calcite, small amounts of amphibole and clay minerals such as ilite, chlorite and smectite. After calcination of oyster shells mixed with 0.2-4.0 wt% sediments at $900^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, regardless of the dehydration, dehydroxylation, and phase change of these minerals at the lower temperature than this experiment, no noticeable changes were observed on the specific surface area of the calcined product. However, when mixed with 0.1 to 2.0 wt% NaCl, the specific surface area generally increases as compared with the shell sample before calcination. The specific surface area increases with increasing amount of salt, and then decreases again. This is closely related to the changes of surface morphology. As the amount of NaCl increases, the morphology of the surface is similar to that of gel. It changes into a slightly angular, smaller particle and again looks like gel with increasing amount of NaCl. Our results show that NaCl affects morphological changes probably caused by melting of some oyster shells, but may have different effects on the specific surface area of calcination product depending on the NaCl contents.

After pre-treatment of oyster shells according to particle size (0 ~ 1, 1 ~ 2, 2 ~ 5 mm) and pyrolysis temperature (400(P400), 500(P500), 600(P600), 800(P800)℃), changes in the properties of sediments mixed with pre-treated oyster shells were investigated. The primary component of the oyster shell was changed from CaCO3 to CaO at temperatures above 700℃. The Ca2+ concentration in P800 was 790 mg/L, which was 2 ~ 3 times higher than those in the control and other experimental samples. Ca2+ elution significantly increased at the pyrolysis temperature over than 600℃. In oyster shells pyrolyzed over 600℃, the pH of the pore water increased by 0.1 ~ 0.5, due the hydrolysis of CaO formed by the pyrolysis of CaCO3. The PO4-P of the overlying and pore water in P600 and P800 were 0.1 ~ 0.2 mg/L lower than those of the control. The increased pH and elution of Ca2+ from oyster shells should suppress the upwelling of PO4-P from the sediment. Based on the above results, it was confirmed that the pyrolysis temperature of oyster shells influenced NH3-N and PO4-P concentrations in the sediment; however, the particle size of oyster shells had little effect. The results of this study can be used as a foundation for research on the use of pyrolyzed oyster shells to improve low-contamination coastal benthic environments.
