The total amount of fluidized bed incinerator ash, i.e. incombustion materials generated from the municipal solid waste incineration(MSWI) in Korea was approximately 14,000 tons in 2006. Most of the ash after ferrous metal separation is finally discard to the landfill sites. In the present work, possibility for recycling of the ash is studied to utilize the ash as raw materials for ceramic products. Incombustion materials obtained from the two different incinerators were used to recover the raw materials by applying the magnetic separation and screening process to remove metallic particles. The raw materials show relatively low heavy metals content obtained from the KSLP leaching tests. The ceramic products were prepared by mixing the clay with the various amounts of the raw material. The physical properties, i.e. shrinkage rate, absorbancy and compressive strength of the ceramic products sintered at $1,000^{\circ}C$ and $1,050^{\circ}C$, respectively were improved by increasing the addition amounts of the incinerator ash. Based on the leaching tests the ceramic products also be satisfied with the standard limits on the leachability of heavy metals because most of the metallic materials are effectively removed from the incombustion materials by appling the separation processes.

The Goryeo roof tiles from the Oegol site in Tangjeong, Asan are classified into three groups in color such as gray, red yellow and gray-yellow groups, respectively. While each group of tiles shows characteristic specific gravity, absorption ratio, LOI and vitrification degree, mineral content and distribution, and chemical composition are generally homogeneous among all groups of roof tiles. Also, all roof tiles and soils from the site show similar geochemical behavior of elements and clay-mineralization degree. This indicates that the soil from the site is probable to be a raw material of the roof tiles. Firing temperature of the roof tiles is estimated as 950 to $1,050^{\circ}C$ for the gray group, 800 to $900^{\circ}C$ for the red yellow group, and 900 to $950^{\circ}C$ for the gray-yellow group. In conclusion, roof tiles from the Oegol site is interpreted to be made of local clay without additive minerals, applying various firing conditions and standardized purifying process of raw clay materials.
In this study, we aimed to elucidate the materialistic characteristics of 11 pieces of earthenware belonging to the Neolithic and Bronze Age excavated from Jeongseon Auraji, South Korea. As a result, the chemical composition of earthenwares belonging to the early Bronze Age was distributed in the intermediate area between the Neolithic and Bronze Age earthenwares, but no significant difference was confirmed based on their manufacturing period. Upon comparison, the earthenwares excavated from Jeongseon Auraji site were found to comprise less acidic components than those excavated from Yeongdong, and are characterized by the alkaline components depending on the excavated site. In the rare earth elements distribution pattern, all the analyzed earthenwares exhibited similar pattern, confirming that the raw materials present in the clay were the same. As a result of microstructure analysis, the clay particles and voids were found to be irregularly distributed in the analyzed earthenwares. Neolithic earthenwares exhibited many irregular voids, and an arrangement of aluminosilicate, including feldspar, was observed along with the clay substrate. Furthermore, we confirmed that the empty space in early Bronze Age earthenwares was filled with fine particles and cube crystals. Moreover, the main mineral phase of earthenwares excavated from Jeongseon Auraji exhibited similar composition, and therefore, there was no significant difference in the firing temperature of these earthenwares. The firing temperature of the earthenwares ranged from 750 to 850℃.

An examination of the characteristics of the ground material in is very important in a ground investigation. Casagrande classified soil using the material properties of soils. The liquid-plastic limit test is useful for obtaining basic information of soil, and is an effective method for classifying silt and clay, as well as the material properties, such as shear strength, shrinkage, and expansion. Unlike the liquid limit test, the plasticity limit test is due to the ambiguity of the test procedure. Many geotechnical engineers and scholars have questioned the test results. In this study, a new plasticity limit method was used to compare with the thread rolling method with kaolinite, ilite and bentonite at a certain ratio, and samples were collected from the west coast of Korea. As a result of the comparison, the test value of the new test method showed high reproducibility because the error range of the test value of the conventional thread rolling test was only 10% but the error range of the new test values decreased to 2%. The difference in the slope of the existing plasticity test values was 0.1519 ~ 0.1925, and the results of the test were similar or coincided with each other. Aone - point method was proposed to make it easier to apply the new test method.
This study aims to clarify the characteristics of the physical and mechanical properties of soil-slope failure of Okcheon metamorphic zone. Soil samples were collected from 35 collapsed and uncollapsed artificial slopes along national roads. A series of laboratory experiments was carried out to examine physical and mechanical properties of soils and rocks. The results show that failure slopes have weakness of failure at 0.75 of AMI or higher, 32% of liquid limit or higher, and 31% of saturated moisture content or higher. The plastic index of failure slopes is correlated to wet density and saturated density. It turned out that failure could easily happen according to a high plastic index even if the void ratio was low. The greater the contents of bigger-sized soil, i.e. contents of sands and gravels rather than of clays, is the greater the chance to fail at the slope.
This study was to identify the material characteristics and provenance of the Joseon (the 15th to 17th century) potteries from Ssangyongdong Yongam site in Cheonan. The pottery samples of the kilns and the workshops (habitation) from the study area have grey or red color with similar matrix but various shapes and different hardness, according to firing temperature. All of the pottery and the workshop soils were very similar patterns with characteristics of occurrences, mineralogy and geochemical evolution trend. But soils from around the site does not correspond with them. So the workshop soil that the fine clay is raw clay for making pottery in Yongam site. Firing temperature of soft-type potteries were presumed to be formed around $900^{\circ}C$ based on phase transition of clay minerals and mica. Hard-type pottery, mullite was detected and plagioclase was not detected by X-ray diffraction analysis, which means that potteries had experienced firing between 1,000 to $1,100^{\circ}C$.

A series of field tests were performed to investigate the behavior of jacket anchor and to evaluate the ultimate bond stress of jacket anchor. From twelve sets of field tests on the jacket anchor and general type ground anchor, it was observed that the pullout resistance of jacket anchor is significantly larger than that of the ground anchor and that the plastic deformation of jacket anchor is significantly smaller than that of general ground anchor at the same loading cycle. Especially in gravel layers, the jacket anchor provides more than 250% increase in ultimate resistance and more than 600% reduction in plastic deformation, compared with the general ground anchor. Finally, the relationship between the injection pressure and overburden pressure is proposed to determine the optimum injection pressure, based on additional field test results.

It was difficult for the existing rotary kiln to fabricate the fine aggregates under 3 mm due to the sticking phenomenon between specimens. In this study, the vertical type fluidizing furnace was designed and manufactured by which the lightweight fine aggregates of specific gravity $1.1{\sim}1.7$, water absorption $11{\sim}19%$ could be fabricated from the green body of clay: stone sludge: spent bleaching clay = 60 : 30 : 10 (wt%) without sticking-together happening. The minimum sintering temperature for bloating of aggregates was $1130^{\circ}C$. The specimens sintered over $1140^{\circ}C$ showed the typical bloating characteristics of lightweight aggregates and an inner layer was discovered due to widened cracks on a surface. But the crack on a surface did not propagate into a black core area so had no effect on a water absorption of aggregates. The sintering temperature made the thickness of shell and the black core area thin and expanded respectively but the sintering time did not affect the microsturcture of aggregates. The water absorption of aggregates decreased with increasing temperature owing to increased amount of liquid formed on a surface. Also sintering time affected a lot on a water absorption because it takes a time to form a liquid, which change the open pores to closed pores by blocking.
Based on an estimating method for post-cyclic strength and stiffness with cyclic triaxial tests proposed by one of the authors, cyclic Direct Simple Shear (DSS) tests were carried out to confirm whether the method can be adapted to DSS test on fine-grained soils: silty clay, plastic silt, and non-plastic silt. Results from cyclic and post-cyclic DSS tests were interpreted by a modified method as adopted for cyclic and post-cyclic triaxial tests. In particular, influence of plasticity index for fine-grained soils and initial static shear stress (ISSS) was emphasised. Findings obtained from the present study are: (i) liquefaction strength ratio of fine-grained soils decreases with decreasing plasticity index and increasing ISSS; (ii) plasticity index and ISSS did not markedly influence relation between equivalent cyclic stiffness and shear strain relations; (iii) the higher the plasticity index of fine-grained soils is, the less the strength ratio decreases with increment of a normalcies excess pore water pressure (NEPWP); (iv) stiffness ratio of plastic silt has large activity decrease rapidly with increasing excess pore water pressure; and (v) post-cyclic strength and stiffness results from DSS tests agree well with those predicted by the method modified from a procedure used for triaxial test results.
The trickling system for automatic and individual watering were made with Bunchungto, Ongito and Backjato. The thickness of ceramics were 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0mm. And they were fired in a muffle furnace at five different temperatures between 500 and 900'E during 12 hours. The upper plastic parts of sensor consisted of five elements made by steel mold. With the photo fiber sensor attached to datalogger, an accumulated amount of drops for every 10 minutes were recorded. The porosity is higher in the order of Bunchungto, Backjato and Ongito; also, as the firing temperature is higher and the thickness is thicker, the porosity is higher. The ceramic sensors consisted of $SiO_2$ of 54.17~71.62wt.%, A1$_2$$O_3$ of 15.42~33.79wt.% and the rest of 10wt.%, those were Fe$_2$$O_3$, CaO, MgO, Na$_2$O, $K_2$O, Ti $O_2$, P$_2$$O_{5}$. The pattern of dropping were changed according to the variety, thickness and firing temperature of ceramics. As the ceramics were made thicker, the fluctuation of dropping became more rapid, but it did not regularly work at 1mm thickness. As the firing temperature of ceramics became higher, the fluctuation of dropped amount became more rapid.
