  • Automatic detection of pig wasting diseases is an important issue in the management of group-housed pigs. In particular, porcine respiratory diseases are one of the main causes of mortality among pigs and loss of productivity in intensive pig farming. In this paper, we propose a noise-robust system for the early detection and recognition of pig wasting diseases using sound data. In this method, first we convert one-dimensional sound signals to two-dimensional gray-level images by normalization, and extract texture images by means of dominant neighborhood structure technique. Lastly, the texture features are then used as inputs of convolutional neural networks as an early anomaly detector and a respiratory disease classifier. Our experimental results show that this new method can be used to detect pig wasting diseases both economically (low-cost sound sensor) and accurately (over 96% accuracy) even under noise-environmental conditions, either as a standalone solution or to complement known methods to obtain a more accurate solution.

  • This study will research the possibility about the extension from aesthetic artwork of information visualization to performance area. In information visualization fields, the function of transmitting information is important factor. In addition, the relationship with the audience concerning immersion and interactivity is also significant. Therefore, if an artwork in information visualization can extend to a performance, this study proposes that it is necessary to consider what elements are needed to intensify sensorium for the audience in that artwork. In order to solve that question, this study introduces and analyzes the installation artworks by Ben Rubin and Mark hansen in 2001. From this case study, we suggest three elements-the performing self, the performing interface and the dramatic pattern-to amplify sensorium by hypermediacy for the audience. This research would contribute to the understanding aesthetic artworks based on information visualization in terms of performing arts.

  • Railway point machines act as actuators that provide different routes to trains by driving switchblades from the current position to the opposite one. Since point failure can significantly affect railway operations with potentially disastrous consequences, early stress detection of point machine is critical for monitoring and managing the condition of rail infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a stress detection method for point machine in railway condition monitoring systems using sound data. The system enables extracting sound feature vector subset from audio data with reduced feature dimensions using feature subset selection, and employs support vector machines (SVMs) for early detection of stress anomalies. Experimental results show that the system enables cost-effective detection of stress using a low-cost microphone, with accuracy exceeding 98%.

  • Recently, various health care methods for infants have been suggested in the impending era of low birth rate society. We propose, in this context, an early diagnosis method for common infant respiratory diseases. Particularly, the method is regarding infant cold and infant pneumonia. Firstly, sounds of infant crying, only expressing means of infants, among the infant cold group and the infant pneumonia group are compared and examined to find the differences from those among the healthy infant group. For this, the link between infected organs and articulatory organs is investigated. Also, resulting wave forms and frequency bandwidths among each group are compared and analyzed, by using the spectrum for a component voice, to diagnose the infant cold and pneumonia. Finally, the effectiveness of this method is verified through the experiments.

  • To study song themes and variation of Yellow-throated Bunting, we obtained and analyzed recordings from 45 males breeding in 16 deciduous forests of 6 provinces. We classified the 3,245 songs into a total of 164 song themes and 1,024 song variants according to the identification on the base of difference(lexicon) in 640 syllable compositions. Males had one to six song themes and averaged 3.5 themes. No males shared an identical song theme. Males had $5{\sim}14$ syllables (ave. 9.4) in one song theme and males increased effectively their repertoire size by changing syllable composition (i.e. adding, deleting, or substituting one or more syllables) in a single song theme. The number of variants averaged 5.1 (range 1 to 31) per song theme. Individual variability was highest in the terminal elements of the song. In PCA, the 16 populations are clearly separated on Co. I based on shared syllable and on Co. II based on unique syllable. Similarity of songs based on shared syllables by distance coefficients, showed a pattern of concordance with geography. Pairwise similarity declined with increasing distance among recording sites. 16 different geographical regions by the syllable were divided in UPGMA tree.
