  • The aim of this study is to explore the purpose and method of reading by examining relevant research from various academic fields. According to the reading theory in the Cho-seon Dynasty, reading was classified as either a way of gaining fame, becoming a gentle man, or solving problems. However, this views have been largely replaced by the belief that reading serves two main purposes: self-discipline and practical usage in this study (Confucian perspectives have been excluded from this approach). The traditional reading method, known as sukookdok-jeongsa, influenced by Chu-tzu's reading, emphasized a fluent reading and a deep reading. A fluent reading (sukookdok) method involved a reading aloud, memorizing, and a repeated reading for the literal decoding. After decoding, a deep reading (jeongsa) involved a reading while taking notes, a reading with reference and a repeated reading for the optimal comprehension. A fluent reading in the traditional reading theory is succeeded by 'a reading for liberal arts' and a deep reading is succeeded by 'a reading for learning'. The sukookdok-jeongsa's various reading methods are useful enough to apply to reading education in the school library. But 'a reading for fun' did not appear in the traditional reading theory.

  • In this paper, we introduce a reading training program offering visual-auditory cue with noise cancellation function (RT program) developed by us. The RT program provides some training sentences with visual-auditory cues. Motor speech disorder patients can use the visual and/or auditory cues for reading training. To provide convenient estimation of training result, we developed a noise cancellation algorithm. The function of the algorithm is to remove noise and auditory-cues which are recorded with reading speech at the same time while patient read the sentences in PC monitor. In addition, we developed a function for finding out the first starting time of reading sound after a patient sees a sentence and begins to read the sentence. The recorded speeches are acquired from six people(three male, three female) in four noisy environments (interior noise, white noise, car interior noise, babble noise). We evaluated the timing error for starting time between original recorded speech and processed speech in condition of executing noise cancellation function and not executing. The timing error was improved as much as $4.847{\pm}2.4235[ms]$ as the effect of noise cancellation. It is expected that the developed RT program helps motor speech disorder patient in reading training and symptom evaluation.

  • This study examined the relation among orthographic knowledge, phonological awareness, and visual word decoding and encoding abilities. Children aged 5 to 8 years took letter knowledge test, phoneme-grapheme correspondence test, orthographic representation test(regular word and irregular word representation), phonological awareness test(word, syllable and phoneme awareness), word decoding test(regular word and irregular word reading) and word encoding test(regular word and irregular word dictation). The performances of all tasks were significantly different among groups, and there were positive correlations among the tasks. In the word decoding and encoding tests, the variables with the most predictive power were the letter knowledge ability and the orthographic representation ability. It was found that orthographic knowledge more influenced visual word decoding and encoding skills than phonological awareness at these ages.

  • This study is a consideration of Xu Xiao-Bin(徐小斌)'s Sounds of nature(天?) in the mutual text point of view of Lee Cheong-jun's Sopyonje series. Xu Xiao-Bin's Sounds of nature shows similar motive to Lee Cheong-jun's Sopyonje series that is a story of a mother who damages her daughter's eyes and the daughter. however, it is accepted in totally different ways that the action of father/mother who damage their daughter's eyes. the mother in Sounds of nature is a composer as well as singer and the father in Sopyonje is a singer. The mother's behavior is not able to have duty in Sounds of nature due to it is focused in 'mother's action' rather than a singer but the father's behavior is focused in 'singer's action' in Sopyonje. therefore the action of the father, who is a singer, is considered not merely personal desire of father but also desire to preserve 'singing' as a national culture in public status. the length between two novels are clear in the two daughter's point of views. the daughter in "Sounds of nature" refuses her destiny made from her mother. The daughter's behavior of recovering her own volition, becomes frankly showing the falsehood of 'mother's love. In comparison, the daughter's voice is under the shade in Sopyonje. she surrenders herself to the fate made by her father, and she does not show her desire. This is the point that the difference is created by gender of writers.

  • Objective : The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of aloud reading on handwriting legibility in low-level elementary school children. Methods : The subject of the present study consisted of 45 elementary school 2nd graders who were normally developed checked by the Developmental Test of Visual Perception. Experimental period was conducted total six times that Pre-evaluation once, four times intervention, and Post-evaluation once from November 2 to November 25, 2015. When Pre-evaluation and Post-evaluation was measured the handwriting legibility and speed using Handwriting Skill Test. When intervention divided and implemented to experimental group who handwriting with aloud reading, control group1 who only handwriting, and control group2 who nothing. Pre-evaluation and Post-evaluation identified change the handwriting legibility using Handwriting Skill Test. Result : After intervention, handwriting legibility improve female than male. At word card1, control group1 improve significantly handwriting legibility within group and control group2 come out significant difference but handwriting legibility decrease. At word card2, experimental group and control group1 improve significantly handwriting legibility within group. Experimental group and control group1, control group1 and control group2 come out significant difference between group. Conclusion : The present study demonstrates that handwriting training improve handwriting legibility to elementary school 2nd graders.
