This study explores differential value implications of R&D expenditure across firms, especially in terms of growth potential of small businesses. Analyzing Korean listed firms for the period from 1982 to 2014, we document the followings. First, large firms, defined as the top quintile group based on market capitalization, have spent higher R&D expenditure compared to small (bottom quintile group) and medium (middle quintile groups) firms and the difference between groups has enlarged over time. Relatedly, the persistence of R&D spending, measured by the association between current R&D expenditure and cumulative future R&D expenditure over the next five years, is lowest in small firms. Second, R&D of large (small) firms are more (less) likely to generate operating profits over the next five years. Additional analyses suggest that the relation between R&D and gross margin is strongest in large firms, suggesting that R&D underlies their competitiveness in the product market. Third, small firms have borne the highest uncertainty related to R&D investment proxied by the association between current R&D and volatility of future earnings. As a result, the likelihood of R&D leading to future patents is also lowest in small firms. Fourth, the probability of moving up to the next size group within the next five years is significantly lower in small firms than others. Finally, we find that the divergence in R&D expenditure between large and small firms is positively associated with product market concentration. Overall, our findings confirm the small business growth trap in relation to R&D investment.

Depending on the sophistication of IT, it is increasing more and more information leaks and breaches. Accordingly the majority of companies have expand investment protection for the information. However, companies still have been exposed the vulnerability of information leakage. Especially, small IT service businesses than large corporations relatively have some limitations in the points of resources and manpower business activities. For studies on information security for small IT service companies so far, however, there have been insufficient studies considering small business scales and business characteristics of IT services. In this study, we made to design an information security management model for establishing security measures of small IT service companies which are classified SI/SM, DB, IR and IP industry that depending on how the value creation of the business. In detail, we performed an empirical analysis for small IT service business to consider business characteristics and we proposed security implementation strategies based on the analysis results.

본 연구는 미국에서 boat공업의 중심지 중의 하나인 Seattle의 boat 공업의 입지와 그 변화를 고찰하므로서 소기업의 입지를 구명하려고 하였다. 본 연구에서는 먼저 Seattle에서 소규모 boat제조업체가 가장 많이 집중한 Washington호와 Shilshole 만간의 운하지역을 연구지역으로 선정하려 이 지역내에 입지하고 있는 boat 제조업체의 기업주와 interview한 결과를 기본자료로 이용하였다. 이상에서 얻어진 결과는 다음과 같았다. 연구지역의 소규모 boat 공업은 boat제조에 흥미와 능력을 가진 기업가들이 boat 공업에 유리한 Seattle의 환경의 영향을 받아 그들의 기업을 그들의 오랜 거주 지역에서 시작하므로서 발생하게 되었다. 그러나 담수를 지향하는 이 공업의 입지상의 특색, 원료공급처와 제품판매처의 위치, 주위의 지형 그리고 지방정부의 정책에 기인하여 이 공업은 Chittenden Locks와 Portage 만간의 운하지역에 그 입지가 국한되었다. 다시 이 지역내에서는 주위의 지형과 토지이용, 기업의 재정적인 능력 때문에 이 운하지역에 연해있는 기존공장 혹은 건물을 이용하여 입지하게 되었다. 입지후에 이 공업은 원료공급처와 제품판매처와의 강한 linkage를 형성하고 있다. 더구나 원료공급처의 희소성에 기인한 공간적 독점과 소비자 및 제품의 특성 때문에 연구지역의 대부분의 소규모 boat 제조업체는 바로 근처에 있는 원료공급처 및 소비자와 긴밀한 contact를 하고 있고 이러한 contact를 통하여 그들의 입지를 존속시키고 있다. 한편 Seattle 이 가지고 있는 boat 공업에 유리한 기업환경의 덕택으로 이들 소규모 boat 제조업체들은 수요의 계절적인 변동에서 초래되는 노동력의 공급 때문에 곤란을 받을 뿐 장기적인 불황에 직면한 적은 없다. 이리하여 이들 업체들은 이러한 계절적인 변동에 대처하기 위해 생산 input 의 조절, 주위의 기존공장이나 건물의 병합을 통한 연속적인 확장 혹은 그들의 action space 내에 있는 기존공장이나 건물을 이용한 이동등과 같은 입지변화를 보여왔을 뿐이다. 이리하여 연구지역의 소규모 boat공업은 Seattle의 경제 system 내의 주요 subsystem의 하나로서 활발히 움직이고 있다. 그러나 만약 기업의 외부환경에서 초래되는 stress, 즉 주민의 소득저하, 타 recreation 산업이 쇠퇴하게 되면 이 공업 또한 쇠퇴될 것이다. 요컨대 담수 지향성과 관련된 입지상의 특색을 제외하고는 연구지역의 소규모 boat 공업은 타 소규모 공업과 동일한 입지상의 특색을 가지고 있다.

기업의 정보가 방대해지고 이러한 정보에 대한 효율적이 관리의 필요성에 의해 현재 제조업, 유통서비스업, 금융업등 일반기업은 물론 공공기관에서도 ERP의 도입은 경영에 있어서 피할 수 없는 꼭 필요한 것이 되어지고 있다. 하지만, 소규모 중소기업은 초기도입비용, 업무 프로세스의 재설계에 따른 업무 부담, 전산능력 보유자의 미비등의 문제로 ERP 도입의 필요성은 인식 하지만, 도입은 결정을 쉽게 내리지 못하고 있는 상황이다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 소규모 중소기업의 ERP 보급확산을 위한 SERP(Small Enterprise Resource Planning)를 제안한다.

중·소규모의 작은 회사는 아직 그 규모가 크지 않은 회사로서 인력과 장비, 자금 등이 제한되어 있다. 그러나 이러한 회사일수록 회사의 효율을 높이기 위한 인트라넷 구축은 필수적이라하겠다. 그럼에도 비용과 시간 때문에 인트라넷 구축을 하지 못하는 형편이다. 본 논문에서는 중소기업의 어려운 여건을 고려하여 이의 효율을 높이기 위한 인트라넷 솔루션을 설계하고 구현한다. 제안한 시스템은 회사의 기존 장비를 이용하여 중소기업과 작은 워크그룹에 맞는 다양한 기능과 개념을 설계하고 구현하며, 기업간 B2B, B2C의 인프라 구축을 극대화시킴으로써 기업들이 생산성 향상과 경쟁력을 강화시키는데 도움을 주도록 한다.

Small IT service organizations operate their business with limited resources and workforce in comparison with large enterprises, and they could be categorized in various types based on the method of value creation. But the recent studies on information security have been conducted and they were focused on the construction of general information security countermeasure, without considering size of the business and characteristic. Hence we have undergone the process of classifying information assets. Then we extracted and categorized the information assets considering characteristics of small organization's size and business process. Specifically we have classified the information assets according to business scenario design through qualitative observation method. Then we have validated the classified information assets by utilizing statistical method. We may anticipate that this study results could be basic data for developing the differentiated information security countermeasures for small IT service organization.

본 논문에서는 50인 이하 소규모 제조업에 대해 어떤 방법으로 접근하는 것이 BCMS를 적용 하는데 효과적인지 연구하였다. BCMS의 적용범위가 상당히 광범위하고 현재 BCMS를 적용하고 있는 기업의 규모는 대부분 크며, 기업인들의 인식도 큰 규모만이 BCMS가 적용될 수 있다고 믿고 있다. 이에 실질적으로 한국의 기업군을 대부분 차지하고 있는 50인 이하의 제조업이 어떻게 BCMS를 적용하는 것이 효과적인지를 개발하여 소규모 기업도 어떠한 상황 하에서도 사업이 지속가능할 수 있도록 BCMS를 적용 하고자 한다. 일단 50인 이하 소규모 업체는 조직의 상황이 대기업이나 중견기업에 비해 간단하다. 또한 이해관계자도 대부분 많지 않다. 그렇기 때문에 BCMS를 수립하기 위해 파악하여야 할 핵심 업무나 관련 리스크도 많지 않을 것이다. 여기에 착안을 하여 기존에 대부분 갖추고 있는 품질, 환경, 안전보건시스템과 연계하여 사업연속성관리 시스템을 구축하면 50인 이하 기업도 별도의 추가시스템이 아닌 통합시스템의 일환으로 손쉽게 BCMS를 적용하여 어떠한 리스크에도 사업의 연속성을 갖출 수 있는 능력을 가질 것이다. BCMS에서 요구하는 사항에 대해 개별적인 접근방식보다 기존에 갖추고 있는 시스템을 적용하여 통합시스템 접근방식이 키포인트이다.

This paper analyzed the effects of changes in temporary workers on firm performances, and the effects of different workforce portions of business functions on corporate performances, respectively, using Korean venture business survey conduected in 2013. Results show that the performance of venture businesses decreases significantly, as the portion of temporary workers increases, which is more pronounced in small companies than in medium companies. In addition, the portions of workforce for administration, R&D, production, and sales don't have uniform effect on firm performance, where medium companies are affected significantly by the portions of production and sales, while small companies do not show significant relationship. This analysis implies that innovative firms, based on knowledge workers, need to use caution when they plan to increase temporary workers, which may lead to lower performance. However, we need further research for the basic causes of the possible lower performance.

기업 홍보를 위해 사용되는 인쇄 기반의 카탈로그는 오프라인의 한계로 비용대비 효과를 보지 못하는 경우가 많기 때문에 최근에는 웹 기술을 이용해 고객에게 실시간으로 회사 정보를 제공하는 전자 카탈로그가 많이 사용되고 있다. 그러나 벤처기업, 소상공인 등의 소규모 기업 대부분은 전자 카탈로그를 구축하고 유지보수를 하기위해 인력과 비용을 지출하기가 힘들다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해서 본 논문에서는 스마트폰 기반의 모바일앱 카탈로그 시스템을 설계하고 구현하였다. 구현된 시스템을 이용하여 소규모 회사에서는 적은 비용으로 쉽고 빠르게 카탈로그를 구축한 후 스마트폰에 설치함으로써 스마트폰만 있으면 언제 어디서든 고객에게 회사 및 제품을 소개할 수 있다. 또한, 구현된 시스템은 카탈로그 정보관리 기능을 제공함으로써 회사의 변경사항을 실시간으로 유지보수를 할 수 있는 장점이 있다.

This study investigated the location conditions, spatial linkage structures, and firm specific problems of small firms of the Greater Cincinnati metropolitan area by sectors and by areal distribution. The major locational advantages were closeness to customers and suppliers followed by accessibility to inter-state highways. These results were supported by spatial linkage structures in which within-region linkages occupied a greater portions of linkage, showing the importance of small firms in the regional economy. The linkage patterns showed distance decay effect with high elasticity. While there were no significant differences of locational conditions and spatial linkage structures of small firms between core and peripheral area, a slight difference was identified among sectors. Chemical related manufacturing firms show different locational conditions and spatial linkage structure with weak within-local linkages. The main locational disadvantages were lack of qualified labor, undesirable neighborhood, heavy tax, and space shortage. Considering the biggest problems such as lack of qualified labor, difficulties in sales/marketing, low accessibility to financial resource, and technological inability, the inter-related cooperative business networks among firms and regional institutions, consulting companies, chamber of commerce, and universities are needed to stimulate regional economic development and survival of small firms.
