  • As carbon-free has been getting interest, renewable energy sources have been increasing. However, renewable energy is intermittent and variable so it is difficult to predict the produced electrical energy from a renewable energy source. In this study, digital-twin concept is applied to solve difficulties in predicting electrical energy from a renewable energy source. Considering that rotation of wind turbine has high correlation with produced electrical energy, a model which simulates rotation in the drivetrain of a wind turbine is developed. The base of a drivetrain simulation model is set with well-known state equation in mechanical engineering, which simulates the rotating system. Simulation based machine learning is conducted to get unknown parameters which are not provided by manufacturer. The simulation is repeated and parameters in simulation model are corrected after each simulation by optimization algorithm. The trained simulation model is validated with 27 real wind turbine operation data set. The simulation model shows 4.41% error in average compared to real wind turbine operation data set. Finally, it is assessed that the drivetrain simulation model represents the real wind turbine drivetrain system well. It is expected that wind-energy-prediction accuracy would be improved as wind turbine digital twin including the developed drivetrain simulation model is applied.

  • This study attempted to simulate changes in the thermal environment according to the type of apartment complex in Korea using CFD techniques and evaluate the thermal environment by type of apartment. First, apartment complex types in the 2000s and 2010s were referred from previous studies and four types of apartment complex were extracted from. Second, the layout of the apartment complex and temperature changes were analyzed by the direction of wind inflow. Third, a standardized model was created from each type using tower type, plate type, and mixed driving. Last, CFD simulations were performed by setting up the inflow of wind from a total of eight directions. The temperature was relatively low in the type consisting of only the tower type and the type of placing the tower type in the center of the complex, regardless of the direction of the wind. It was due to the good inflow of wind from these types to the inside of the complex. It can be interpreted because wind flows easily into the complex in these types. The findings showed that wind flow and resulting temperature distribution patterns differed depending on the building type and complex layout type, confirming the need for careful consideration of the complex layout in the early design stage. The results are expected to be used as basic data for creating a sustainable residential environment in the early design stage of apartment complexes in the future.

  • Recently, Korea has declared carbon neutrality by 2050. The Korea Forest Service is promoting the precision and high technology of forest resource surveys. As such, the demand for forest resource management is increasing, and the need to build a digital twin of forest space is increasing. However, to date, digital twin has only built and provided virtual city services, which are city and nationwide digital twin environments. Three-dimensional digital twin services targeting forest space are not operated and provided. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to implement a forest digital twin environment to provide 3D forest spatial information services corresponding to vertical information such as tree-level height and thorax diameter. By lightweighting realistic 3D tree models and applying 3D Tiles, we confirmed the feasibility of implementing a forest digital twin environment for 3D forest spatial information services. Through continuous research, we plan to implement a forest digital twin that can deploy and service 3D tree models for trees nationwide, including street trees in urban areas. This is expected to enable the development of forest digital twin services for forest resource management.

  • Speech emotion recognition (SER) is a technique that is used to analyze the speaker's voice patterns, including vibration, intensity, and tone, to determine their emotional state. There has been an increase in interest in artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, which are now widely used in medicine, education, industry, and the military. Nevertheless, existing researchers have attained impressive results by utilizing acted-out speech from skilled actors in a controlled environment for various scenarios. In particular, there is a mismatch between acted and spontaneous speech since acted speech includes more explicit emotional expressions than spontaneous speech. For this reason, spontaneous speech-emotion recognition remains a challenging task. This paper aims to conduct emotion recognition and improve performance using spontaneous speech data. To this end, we implement deep learning-based speech emotion recognition using the VGG (Visual Geometry Group) after converting 1-dimensional audio signals into a 2-dimensional spectrogram image. The experimental evaluations are performed on the Korean spontaneous emotional speech database from AI-Hub, consisting of 7 emotions, i.e., joy, love, anger, fear, sadness, surprise, and neutral. As a result, we achieved an average accuracy of 83.5% and 73.0% for adults and young people using a time-frequency 2-dimension spectrogram, respectively. In conclusion, our findings demonstrated that the suggested framework outperformed current state-of-the-art techniques for spontaneous speech and showed a promising performance despite the difficulty in quantifying spontaneous speech emotional expression.

  • The reduction of CO2 emissions in the energy production sector, which accounts for 86.8% of total greenhouse gas emissions, is important to achieve carbon-neutrality. At present, 60% of total power generation in South Korea is coal and natural gas. Replacing fossil fuel with renewable energy such as wind and solar has disadvantages of unstable energy supply and high costs. Therefore, this study was conducted through the co-firing of natural gas, ammonia and hydrogen utilizing the natural gas combined cycle process. The results demonstrated reduction in CO2 emissions and 34%~238% of the power production compared to using only natural gas. Case studies on mass fractions of natural gas, ammonia and hydrogen indicated that power production and NOx emissions were inversely proportional to the ammonia ratio and directly proportional to the hydrogen ratio. This study provides guidelines for the use of various fuel mixtures and economic analysis in co-firing power generation.

  • Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology is gaining attention as a key strategy for achieving carbon neutrality. In this study, CO2 was permanently fixed as carbonate through mineral carbonation and applied as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Such a fixed carbonate by CO2 was used for the preparation of FeCO3 composited with rGO and PVP to be applied as active material for negative electrode in LIBs. Specifically, the rGO plays an important role to increase electrical conductivity and prevent particle aggregation while PVP could stabilize the particle surface and strengthened structural stability as a surfactant. Electrochemical tests showed that the LIB anode material based on FeCO3/rGO composite maintained a capacity of 400 mAh/g after 50 cycles at a current density of 1,620 mA/g. This study suggests the converting CO2 into valuable battery materials can contribute to future energy storage technologies.
