  • In the geosynthetics-reinforced piled embankment the effects of soft soil stiffness, friction angle of the fill material, tensile stiffness of geosynthetics, and height of the embankment on the load transfer soil arch measured by the critical height were numerically investigated. Results from parametric studies show that the magnitude of the soft soil stiffness is the most influencing factor on the critical height. The contour charts of the critical height with respect to the combination of the soft soil stiffness and other parameters were presented. The charts show that the critical height sensitively varies with the combination of the soft soil stiffness and the height of embankment. Under the sufficiently low stiffness of soft soil, the critical height sensitively varies with the friction angle of the fill material. Once the geosynthetic layer is placed, however, the magnitude of the tensile stiffness of the geosynthetic layer hardly influences the critical height of the soil arch.

  • Settlement prediction based on field monitored data, which is used to control subsequent surcharges, is very important in construction management for soft ground improvement with the preloading method. Observational settlement prediction methods, which are suggested for an instantaneous loading, have been widely used in fields. However, they have difficulties in the settlement prediction with subsequent surcharge change. In this paper, a simple method to predict the settlement with subsequent surcharge change is suggested. The suggested method adopts assumptions to simplify the complex field condition and utilizes observational methods. The suggested method is applied to a large consolidation test result, FDM analysis results, and field monitored settlement data to confirm its practicability. From the applications, the suggested method produces reasonable prediction results with various subsequent surcharge changes.

  • The stresses on the buried steel pipe under embankment are analysed by the elasto-plastic theory using FEM to study the influences of the geometry of soil-conduit pipe system and the elastic modulus of the fill on the pipe responses . The geometry of the system considered in this study includes the height of embankment, the thickness of the pipe, and the width and the depth of the trench . By comparing the stresses computed by Marston-Spangler's pipe theory with those obtained from the elasto-plastic theory, Marston-Spangler's theory was discussed and analysed . It is found that the stress distribution around the pipe by elasto- plastic analysis is similar to that by Spangler's flexible pipe theory when the geometrical ratio (diameter/thickness) of the steel pipe is 400. And Spangler's flexible pipe theory does not seem to be suitable to analyse the buried steel pipe of which the geometrical ratio is lower than 200. The vertical loads by the rigid pipe theory are always larger than those by the flexible pipe theory regardness of the variations in the geometry of soil-conduit pipe system considered above and the elastic modulus of the fill.

  • The final consolidation settlement is important factor in soft ground improvement because of settlement management and completion time. The compression index, which is slope of primary consolidation curve, is commonly used for the calculation of final consolidation settlement in clay layer. The existing final consolidation settlement is calculated in total consolidation layer that is assumed as one layer. This paper describes analysis result of the acquired settlement, when the consolidation layer is divided as several layer. The consolidation settlement increased according to increase of the divided layer and then it is converged. This result was unrelated to surcharge load. The division effect of layer is very high when the surcharge load is less than the consolidation layer thickness. The division effect of layer is 1.2 to 1.4 in the general surcharge load, and this value can be apply as safety factor in the calculation of final consolidation settlement.

  • To investigate the characteristics of shear strength and soil deformation in soft grounds, in which various vertical drains were placed, two hundreds field monitoring data of embankments performed in thirteen road construction sites at west and south coastal areas of the Korean Peninsula were collected. At first, the relationship between settlement and lateral displacement was investigated into three stages, in which embankment construction works were divided into initial filling stage, final filling stage and stage after complete filling. And then, the relationship of surcharge pressures and embankment heights with undrained shear strength of soft grounds were investigated. The investigation on settlement and lateral displacement illustrated that the increment of lateral flow to the increment of settlement was low during initial filling stage, but increased gradually with filling and showed largest during final filling stage. After complete filling, the lateral displacement was converged, even though the settlement was increased continuously. Therefore, most of lateral flow was occurred during embankment filling. The ratio of the lateral displacement increment to the settlement increment was 20% for initial filling stage, which coincided with the one presented by Tavenas et al.(1979), but became 50% for final filling stage, which was half of the one presented by Tavenas et al.(1979). However, the ratio reduced to 1% to 9%, which was quite lower than the one presented by Tavenas et al.(1979). Shear deformations, even shear failures, were predicted in soft grounds under initial undrained shear strength, since the design heights of embankments were higher than the yield height in all the sites. However, embankment construction would be possible since the yield height became higher than the design height due to improvement of shear strength of soft grounds with application of the vertical drains. In order to perform safely embankments for road constructions, the embankment loads should be designed not to be exceed 5.14 times the initial undrained shear strength of soft grounds and to be less than 3.0 times the undrained shear strength improved with application of vertical drains in soft grounds.

  • Pile or column supported embankments have been increasingly employed to construct highway or railway embankments over soft soils. Piles or columns of stiffer material installed in the soft ground can provide the necessary support by transferring the embankment load to a firm stratum using a soil arching. However, there has been reported to occur a relatively large differential settlement between the piles and the untreated soils. Geosynthetic reinforced pile or column supported embankment (GRPS) is often used to minimize the differential settlement. Two dimensional finite element anlyses have been performed on both the column supported embankments and the geogrid reinforced column supported embankments by using a PLAXIS 2D to evaluate the soil arching effect. Based on the results obtained from finite element analyses, the stress reduction ratio decreases as the area replacement ratio increases in the column supported embankments. For the geogrid reinforced column supported embankments, the geogrid reinforcemnt can reduce differential settlements effectively. In additon, the use of stiffer geogrid is appeared to be more effective in reducing the differential settlements.

  • The stone column method is widely used in Europe as an alternative to conventional pile foundations. Several benefits of using the stone column method include sound performance, low cost, expediency of construction, and liquefaction resistance among others. Recently, geosynthetic-encased stone column approach has been developed to improve its load carrying capacity through increasing confinement effect. Although such a concept has been successfully applied in practice, fundamentals of the method have not been fully explored. This paper presents the results of an investigation on the load carrying capacity of geogrid-encased stone column using a series of 2D finite element analyses. A parametric study was then conducted for influencing factors such as effect of geogrid encasement, encasement length, geogrid strength, among others. The results of the analyses indicated improved short- and long-term load carrying capacity of the geogrid-encased stone column method has advantages over the conventional stone column method without encasing.

  • In this study, model tests were performed to investigate the settlement characteristics of the rock/soil mixture subgrade with the many portion of mudstone due to the cyclic train loading in high-speed railway. Specially, from the tests varying initial degree of saturation, effects of increment of the degree of saturation in the subgrade due to rainfall or elevation of ground water table under cyclic train loading on the deformation characteristics were analyzed. From the results, in the low degree of saturation, settlement converged to some value. However, in the condition of degree of saturation larger than some value, settlement rapidly increased. Therefore, it was found that it is important to maintain the degree of saturation of subgrade below the specific level to prevent the settlement of subgrade.
