  • Insulin-like growth factor-I(IGF-I)은 70개의 아미노산으로 이루어진 polypeptides로서 pronsulin과 구조적으로 유사하다(Froesch and Zapf, 1985).

  • Diamond film was deposited on Si substrate by using microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) system. After thinning the cross section between diamond film and Si substrate by ion milling method, we investigated its interface via transmission electron microscopy We could observe that the diamond film was grown either directly on Si substrate or via the interlayer between diamond film and Si substrate. Thickness of the interlayer was varied along the cross section. The interlayer might mainly composed of Sic andlor amorphous carbon. We could observe the well-developed electron diffraction pattern of both Si and diamond around the interface. Based on this result, we can conjecture the initial growth behavior of diamond film on Si substrate.

  • Granulosa cells surround the oocyte within the ovarian follicle and play an essential role in creating conditions required for oocyte as well as follicular development. The current study was conducted to examine the gene expression profile of mouse ovaries during the primordial to primary follicle transition process. Total RNAs from mouse ovaries on day 5 and day 12 were synthesized cDNA using annealing control primers. The DEGs were cloned and their identities were analyzed by BLAST search. The Plekha5 and Anxa11 were highly expressed in primary follicle stage. By contrast, their expression was increased in granulosa cells at the primary follicle stage. We have successfully discovered a list of genes expressed in day 5 and day 12 ovaries and confirmed that some of them are differentially expressed in PMF and/or PRI. This is a spatial-temporal regulatory mechanism on the ovarian folliculogenesis through membrane fusion. The gene expression profile from the current study would provide insight for future study on the mechanism(s) involved in primordial-primary follicular transition. This will provide information for identification of the mechanism of ovarian dysfunction.

  • The effect of maternal low protein diets during gestation and lactation on growth and development of young rats was investigated. Pregnant and/or lactating rats were fed the diet containing 20% or 11.7%casein. DNA, RNA and total protein were determined in liver, muscle and brain of 21-day-old young rats and lipid contents and acetylcholinesterase activity in brain. Body and organ weight of young rats were measured. DNA, RNA and protein contents of liver, muscle and brain of young rats were less in maternal low protein group than that of control group. Total lipid and cholesterol contents in brain were less(p<0.01) in low protein group than that of control group than that of control group. And also brain acety;cholnesterase activity of low protein group was significantly (p<0.01) lower than those of control group, but their each organ weight ratios in relation to body weight was higher than that of control group. It could be suggested that the maternal low protein during gestation and lactation has influenced on cell number, cell size, protein content, brain lipid content and acetyl-cholinesterase activity of the offsprings.

  • Early morphological changes of Omobranchus slogans (STEINDACHNER) (Family Blennidae) were studied based on the samples of 125 individuals collected from Changseon channel of Nam-hae in June 1973 and May 1979. Descriptions were made with particular emphasis on developmental changes of supraorbital region, fin rays, development of chromatophores and the preopercular spine. In the early stages the lateral profile of the supraorbital region is perpendicular to tile sagittal plane, however, in the later stages it becomes curved. In the early stage of 5.55 mm in total length the number of soft rays of dorsal fin is 18, and that of the anal fin 15. Ventral fin first appears as a premoidal proturberance. It fully developes into a fin composed of two soft rays in the stages of 12.9 mm in total length. The caudal fin rays first appear in the ventral part and in the stages of 6.15 mm in total length it gets one or two soft rays which bear 1-2 segments. In the later stages each ray bears more than 5 segments. Melanophores first appear as two black spots on the central part of the head. They are distributed on the opercle and the antero-dorsal surface of the trunk in the stage of 18mm in total length. At this stage the general chromatophore. pattern is identical to the adult stage. The anal fin bears melanophores at the basal part of the rays, and it is one of the remarkable morphological characters of this species. In early stages the preopercular spine develops reaching the basal part of the pectoral fin. In the later stages of 15 mm in total length relative length of the spine decreases to total length, and ie reaches only the distal margin of the opercular.

  • Sumoylation is a reversible conjugation process that attaches the small ubiquitin modifier (SUMO) peptide to target proteins and regulates a wide variety of cellular functions in eucaryotes. As final step of the sumoylation, SUMO E3 ligases facilitate conjugation of SUMO to target proteins. To characterize the functions of the SUMO E3 ligases in Oryza sativa, we isolated a single recessive rice SUMO E3 ligase, Ossiz1-2 mutant. In addition, we also confirmed the interaction between OsSIZ1/-2 and OsSUMO1, respectively, by using an Agrobacterium-based tobacco luciferase transient expression system. Ossiz1-2 mutant exhibited approximately 20% reduction in growth and developmental units compared with wild type. Especially, number of filled seeds and total seed weight were dramatically decreased in the Ossiz1-2 mutant rice. Thus, these results suggest that sumoylation by the OsSIZ1 as SUMO E3 ligase plays an important role in regulating growth and development in rice.

  • Purpose : This study was performed to determine the developmental expression pattern of nerve growth factor(NGF) in the urine of healthy children. It was hypothesized that NGF may contribute to the development of the spinobulbospinal micturition reflex that represents the adult micturition pattern. Methods : Voided urine was collected in 60 healthy children during the first 5 years of life(0-1 month, n=10; 1 month-1 year, n=10; 2 years, n=10; 3 years, n=10; 4 years, n=10). The urinary NGF was analyzed by using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Results were normalized based on creatinine or total protein in urine. Results : NGF was significantly greater among neonates compared to other age groups(P<0.05). NGF levels declined during 1 month to 1 year and increased by age 2 years. NGF levels at age 3 years were less than in neonates examined. When comparing the NGF levels according to continence in children over 1 year old, NGF levels were significantly lower in children with continence than in children with incontinence(P<0.05). Conclusion : These data suggest that NGF is involved in the achievement of continence and in mechanisms of bladder nerve growth and in the reorganization of bladder reflex pathway.

  • In Jungian theory the developmental stages of human life are symbolized as a circle that represents the wholeness, and the open ended process towards the wholeness is called Individuation. In the belief that every human being has his or her own "Music Child" that represents one of the creative, genuine, healthy cores of the self, we are all musical beings, and each individual has his or her own relationship to music. Musical individuation therefore refers an open-ended process towards the wholeness in music. Being a Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapist, who values the therapeutic essence of innate creativity and uses improvisational music to maximize it, helped me realize that not only the client but also the therapist has to reach his or her own musical self, Music Child, in order to facilitate any change or growth through music. This realization led me to start a journey towards my own musical individuation. Hence, this essay is a very personal document illustrating my ongoing journey towards musical individuation that will allow me to become more whole and genuine in music.

  • Angiogenesis, the formation of new capillary blood vessels, is a tightly regulated process. Under normal physiological conditions, angiogenesis only takes place during embryonic development, wound healing, and female menstruation. Dysregulation of angiogenesis is associated with many diseases, such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and proliferative retinopathy. The growth and expansion of adipose tissue require the formation of new blood vessels. Adipose tissue is probably the most highly vascularized tissue in the body, as each adipocyte is surrounded by capillaries, and the angiogenic vessels supply nutrients and oxygen to adipocytes. Accumulating evidence shows that capillary endothelial cells communicate with adipocytes via paracrine signaling pathways, extracellular components, and direct cell-cell interactions. Activated adipocytes produce multiple angiogenic factors, including VEGF, FGF-2, leptin, and HGF, which either alone or cooperatively stimulate the expansion and metabolism of adipose tissue by increasing adipose tissue vasculature. Recently, it was demonstrated that antiangiogenic herbal Ob-X extracts and Korean red ginseng extracts reduce adipose tissue mass and suppress obesity by inhibiting angiogenesis in obese mice. Thus, angiogenesis inhibitors provide a promising therapeutic approach for controlling human obesity and related disorders.
