  • The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of gender and exercise participation types on depression and cognitive function in the elderly. The data of 10,059 elderly individuals who participated in survey on the welfare and living conditions of elderly individuals in 2017 were utilized for this study. The SGDS and the MMES-DS were used to measure their level of depression and level of cognitive function. The data were analyzed using the frequency analysis, the reliability analysis, and the two-way ANOVA. The results are as follows: first, the main effects of gender and exercise participation on depression are statistically significant. However, the interaction effect between gender and exercise participation is not significant. Second, the main effect of gender on depression is statistically significant. However, the main effect of exercise frequency on depression and interaction effect between gender and exercise frequency are not significant. Third, the main effects of gender and exercise hours on depression are statistically significant. However, the interaction effect between gender and exercise hours is not significant. Fourth, the main effects of gender and exercise participation on cognitive function are statistically significant. Additionally, the interaction effect between gender and exercise participation is significant. Fifth, the main effects of gender and exercise frequency on cognitive function are statistically significant. However, the interaction effect between gender and exercise frequency is not significant. Lastly, the main effects of gender and exercise hours on cognitive function are statistically significant. Moreover, the interaction effect between gender and exercise hours is significant. In conclusion, participating in exercise has shown to be beneficial for decreasing the level of depression and increasing level of cognitive function in elderly of both genders. An additional discovery made through this research is that women's level of cognitive function improves larger than men's when they participate in exercise.

  • This research was conducted to verify the moderating effect of gender, which impacts learning strategy, negative emotions, and influence that university life adjustment of undergraduates has on academic achievement. Therefore, this survey was conducted on learning strategy and negative emotion in February, targeting 654 freshmen of a university in Seoul on their academic and social adaptation and grades which has been measured and analyzed three months later at the end of the term. The moderating effect according to genders was analyzed through hierarchical regression analyses, and diagram was presented after conducting the simple gradient verification as a post analysis on interactive effect. As a result of analysis, although learning strategy and academic adaptation was appeared to be significantly affecting grades regardless of gender, the impact of negative emotions on academic achievement were significant only to females, and the impact of social adaptation on academic achievement was significant only to males, which enabled the researchers to confirm the regulation effects on different genders. The implications and proposal for a follow-up study about learning strategy, emotion, and adaptation based on the research resulted in the discussion of academic achievement in university.

  • This study examines the impact of sleep duration on Korean adolescents' suicidal impulse. A gender-based analysis was conducted using binary logistic regression method. The major findings are as follows. First, weekday sleep duration had a significant effect only on male adolescents. Male adolescents who sleep less than seven hours on a weekday are likely to experience suicidal impulse by 1.9 times higher than the others. This effect remained significant even when other relevant variables were controlled. On the other hand, female adolescents who have less than seven hours of sleep on a weekday have about 1.3 times higher chances to experience suicidal impulse. However, this effect became insignificant when other variables such as stress were controlled. Meanwhile, weekend sleep duration did not have any significant effect on both male and female adolescents. By demonstrating the different effects between weekday/weekend sleep duration and male/female adolescents, this study supports the claim that it is necessary to take a social approach in studying sleep duration.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate on-line comprehension processing in pronoun resolution. The two important constraints investigated in this study were the gender cue of pronoun and the antecedent case. Using antecedent probe recognition task. Experiment 1 investigated the effects of gender cues and antecedent cases on probe recognition time. There were on signigicant effects of employed variable. This result suggest the possibilty of immediate antecedent assignment depending on the degree of syntactic constraints satisfaction. In Experiment 2. using antecedent probe recognition task. the primed activation level differences between antecedents and non-antecedents over time-course intervals from 0 to 250msec were measured. The effect of gender cues was obtained over 0-250msec time-course condition. This indicates that the gender cues can determine the assignment of proper antecedent for a pronoun. In Experiment 3, subect-case pronouns were used only:Unambiguous gender cues were given and the time-course intervals of 250 and 750msec were employed. A signigicant interaction effect of antecedent cases with probe conditions was obtained. All the results of this research suggest that gender cues are powerful constraints for pronoun resolution.
