  • An automated scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) has been designed, and built to measure in-plane vibration fields over structures. Use of optical fibers allows the compact design of a laser probe head which can be scanned over the vibrating structures. An algorithm for automated self-alignment of the laser probe is developed. The system is completely automated for scanning over the structures, focusing two laser beams at each data point until the detected vibration signal is stable, and for recording and transferring the data to a system computer. The automated system allows one to get extensive data of the vibration field over the structures. The system is tested by scanning a piezoelectric cylindrical shell and a plate excited by a continuous signal and by a pulse signal, respectively. Results show that the automated scanning LDV system can be a useful tool to measure the in-plane vibration field and to detect the elastic waves propagating on the vibrating structures.

  • In this study, standoff detonation tests and static beam tests on $160{\times}290{\times}2200mm$ RC beams were conducted to investigate the effect of local damage on the flexural strength and ductility index. And also, blast resistance of RC beams strengthened with steel fiber and FRP sheet were evaluated by these tests. The standoff detonation tests were performed with charge weight of 1kg and standoff distance of 0.1m. After the tests, crater diameters and loss weights of specimens were measured to evaluate the local damage of specimens. Flexural strength and ductility index were measured by conducting the static beam tests on the damaged and undamaged specimens. As a test results, normal concrete specimen(NC) showed relatively large crater and spall diameters that caused weight loss of 23.5kg as a local damage. Whereas, steel fiber reinforced concrete specimen(SFRC) and FRP sheet retrofitted specimens(NC-F, NC-FS) showed higher blast resistance than NC by reducing crater size and weight loss. Flexural strength and ductility index were decreased in case of local damaged specimens by detonation. Especially, large decrease of flexural strength was shown in NC as compared with intact specimen and brittle failure was occurred due to buckling of compressive reinforcement. In case of specimens strengthened with steel fiber and FRP sheet, residual flexural strength and ductility index were increased as compared with NC. In these results, it is concluded that critical local damage can be occurred unless enough standoff distance can be assured even if the charge weight is small. and it is verified that strengthening method using steel fiber and FRP sheet can increase blast resistance.

  • Acoustic design parameters of a half-wave resonator are studied experimentally for acoustic stability in a model acoustic tube. According to standard acoustic-test procedures, acoustic-pressure signals are measured. Quantitative acoustic properties of sound absorption coefficient are evaluated and thereby, the acoustic damping capacity of the resonator is characterized. The diameter and the number of a half-wave resonator and the diameter of the tube are selected as design parameters for optimal tuning of the resonator. Optimum acoustic damping capacity is observed at smaller open area ratio as the resonator diameter increases.

  • Concrete has excellent mechanical properties, high durability, and economical advantages over other construction materials. Nevertheless, it is not an easy task to apply concrete to long span bridges. That's because concrete has a low strength to weight ratio. Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has a very high strength and hence it allows use of relatively small section for the same design load. Thus UHPC is a promising material to be utilized in the construction of long span bridges. However, there is a possibility of crack generation during the curing process due to the high binder ratio of UHPC and a consequent large amount of hydration heat. In this study, adiabatic temperature rise and mechanical properties were modeled for the stress analysis due to hydration heat. Adiabatic temperature rise curve of UHPC was modeled superposing 2-parameter model and S-shaped function, and the Arrhenius constant was determined using the concept of equivalent time. The results are verified by the mock-up test measuring the temperature development due to the hydration of UHPC. In addition, models for mechanical properties such as elastic modulus, tensile strength and compressive strength were developed based on the test results from conventional load test and ultrasonic pulse velocity measurement.

  • Two test standards to be applied for evaluating shielding effectiveness of HEMP protection facilities, MIL-STD-188-125-1 and IEEE std. 299, provide different test results in spite of the same facility. In particular, at the frequency range of 10 kHz~20 MHz, it is confirmed that the test results by the IEEE Std. 299 are about 20~30 dB lower than the evaluated results by MIL-STD-188-125-1. These results are due to the different measurement conditions specified in the two test standards. Therefore, IEEE Std. 299 can be applied for the shortening of test distance, but the required SE performance based on MIL-STD-188-125-1 must be modified.

  • As demand for drone test flight is rapidly increasing, it is difficult for Goheung Aviation Center alone to meet the test flight demand. Newly developed drones or modified existing aircraft carry potential flight risks due to unpredictable flight performance or poor pilot skill when performing test flights outside the test site. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure sufficient test flight space for the safety verification of manned and unmanned aircraft. Therefore, this study analyzed the status of domestic flight test site and chapter 5 of ICAO DOC 9184-AN / 902 Part 1 (Airport Planning Manual). And to build a comprehensive flight test infrastructure, the methodology for preliminary evaluation of candidate sites for flight test sites and a method for evaluating infrastructure test sites was presented.

  • In this study, the resistance performances of barge are analyzed by model tests and computation using CFD to investigate the flow characteristics around a barge in still water. The model tests are carried out in infinite depth in Inha Technical College Circulation Tank to observe the resistance and the numerical simulations based on VOF(Volume of Fluid) method are performed to analyze the flow around the barge. We have selected two barge models to investigate the flow characteristics according to the different type of barges. The experiments are carried out with the models from 5kts to 10kts(designed speed 7kts) considering the effect of adverse and favorable current. The numerical simulations are performed to analyze the flow and resistance characteristics of barge in the full loaded condition with the target speed and compared with the experimental data to confirm the reliability of the numerical method. The result was that the difference of resistance with 25% occurred at low speed and EHP increased rapidly from 7kts.

  • In this paper, a optimum degaussing technique, which can minimize an underwater magnetic field anomaly generated by the ferromagnetic hull, was verified through the mock-up test of a ship. To predict degaussing field signals due to the degaussing coils installed in a ship, individual coil effects were measured. Exploiting the linearity of coil effects and analytical sensitivity formula, optimum degaussing current values fed to individual coils were decided. To identify degaussing performance of the proposed method, the obtained degaussing currents were applied to the coils. Then the field anomaly signals were measured and analyzed before and after degaussing. Experimental results show the magnitude of the field signal after degaussing is reduced up to 95% of that before degaussing.

  • The objective of this research is to investigate preservative efficacy for refractory species in field tests. The field tests were set up to evaluate the preservative performance of western hemlock and white spruce preservative-treated to the residential products group C and D of Canadian standard (CSA O80 Series-08) that have been developed for residential use in above-ground and ground-contact conditions, respectively. They were incised and pressure-treated with alkaline copper quaternary (ACQ) or copper azole (CA). Treated samples for the ground contact stake test and ground proximity test were installed in Jinju, Korea on November 2010 according to AWPA E7-09 and AWPA E18-06, respectively. Each sample has been annually assigned ratings for decay and termite attack, based on AWPA E7 grading system. After six years and five months of exposure, the untreated samples showed decay and particularly severe damage by termite attack but all the preservative-treated samples showed no decay. The results showed that the 5-mm penetration depths may be applicable for the treatment of refractory species. This paper discusses what to consider for the use of refractory species in Korean wood preservation industry from the penetration and retention points of view.
