Isolation of Marine Bacterium Decomposing Sea tangle (Laminaria japonica) to Single Cell Detritus (다시마(Laminaria japonica)를 single cell detritus로 분해하는 해양세균의 분리)

  • Seventy-one marine bacteria decomposing sea tangle (Laminaria japonica) into single cell detritus (SCD) were isolated from sea water, sea tangle, sea mustard (Undaria pinnatifida), sea urchin (Anthocidaris crassispina), star fish (Acanthaster planci), and turban cell (Batillus cornutus), among which 14 strains decreased cutting strength of sea tangle and had alginate-degrading activity. Marine bacterium No. 34 isolated from turban cell showed lowest cutting strength of sea tangle, strongest alginate-degrading activity, and produced high content of $5-10\;{\mu}m$ SCD from sea tangle. This strain was identified as Vibrio sp. based on morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics and named as Vibrio sp. YKW-34.

On-site Investigation and Verification of Effect of the Sea Urchin Removal Devices (전기장 자극을 활용한 성게제거장치의 해상성능 평가)

  • This study aimed to verify the effectiveness of rescue apparatus, that can capture crabs using external stimuli such as food and electricity, without relying on divers. In this study, a microcomputer-based controller and an IC-device-based controller were developed, and spot inspection was conducted using 20 modules and 30 sea urchin removal modules. Accordingly, 58, 18, 17, and 74 sea urchins were introduced in the first, second, third and fourth experiments, respectively. The result of evaluating the lure of each removal mechanism, based on the catch per unit effort, with an electrical stimulus was 1.1 (32/10), with a feeding stimulus was 3.4 (100/29), and with electrical and feeding stimuli was 3.5 (35/10).

  • Construction safety training has mostly relied on one-way transference of instructors' knowledge to trainees through traditional media such as textbooks and lecture slides. However, safety knowledge could be more effectively acquired in experiential situations. The authors proposed a serious game to provide a comprehensive safety training environment. Trainees who assume the roles of safety inspectors in the game explore a virtual construction site to identify potential hazards and learn from the contents of feedback created by the game as a result of trainees' input. The paper reports details of the game design and development process. The test results indicated that trainees were motivated to refresh their safety knowledge, increased their learning interests, and enjoyed the learning process. In addition, trainees showed positive attitudes towards using the game scoring as a way of evaluating their safety knowledge. The test results encouraged the continuous development of the game.

  • We have developed a serious game for the elderly named 'Paldokangsan3' as a next version of 'Paldokangsan2' which was a walking game with memorization in shopping streets using controllers of hand buttons and foot boards with PC developed in 2012. The interface of had buttons and food boards were changed into the interface of motion capture with the aid of Kinect. The expected effects are improvement of memorization, improvement of concentration ability to find out items in the vision, improvement of vitality through physical walking actions, as well as improvement of mental health through entertainment activities of game play. We have tested 25 volunteers of more than 65 years old in Cheonan city community center for the elderly for 2 weeks. We got the result that the game play was showing positive effectiveness on memorization, physical exercise and self-esteem in mental health area of the elderly.

A Case of Showing Granuloma Following a Sea Urchin Sting (성게 가시에 의하여 육아종이 발생한 1례)

  • The case was described of a 31 year old female who developed fusiform swelling of the right third finger at the site of puncture by sea urchin spine. We observed a radiopaque linear material suggesting a remnant spine which the size was 2.4 mm in sonography and mammography. We confirmed that it exhibits a urchin spine and distinct caseous necrosis with central calcification. Sea urchins(Echinoidea) are ubiquitous marine creatures that resemble pincushions and are covered by calcareous skeletons surrounded by numerous movable calcium carbonate spines. The sharp spines are brittle and easily detach when touched by the victim. Contact with sea urchin spines produces intense pain, some localized erythema and edema. Inflammation develops in response to retained fragments. Granulomas 1-5 mm in diameter develop rarely 2-12 months after envenomation. In treatment, hot water immersion and thorough wound cleansing are advisable. Analgesics may, be necessary after hot water immersion. Attempts to remove these spines should be performed with good lighting sources, preferably with radiological direction. Chronic granulomas usually require complete excision. Acetone has been suggested for rapid resolution of pain. No antidotes are available.

Residue of the Organophosphorus Pesticides in the Coastal Environment on the Cheju island (제주도 연안 해양환경 중에서 유기인계 농약의 잔류)

  • To investigate the residue of organophosphorus pesticides such as Monocrotophos[Dimethyl-1-methyl-2-methyl carbamoylvinylphosphate]and EPN[O-ethyl-O-4-nitrophenyl phenylphosphonothioate]in the coastal environment of Cheju island, samples of sea organism, water and sediment were collected at the Sackdaldong and Daepodong near the Jungmoon golf course in July and Aug. 1997. The qualified detection limit of mono-crotophos and EPN by GC -FPD were 0.024 ng/g and 0.020 ng/g in the sea organism, respectively Neither Monocrotophos nor EPN was detected in seaweed cava (Ecklonia cava), Agar (Gelidium amansii), turban sell (Batillus cornutus) and sea urchin (Anthocidaris Crassispina). They were not detected in seawater and sediment, either. These results showed that the coastal area near the Jungmoon golf course in the Cheju island was not polluted by the organophosphorus pesticides such as Monocrotophos and EPN.

Realism Cues and Memory in Computer Games : Effects of Violence Cues on Arousal, Engagement, and Memory (폭력성게임 내에서의 사실적 묘사 방식이 사용자 각성(arousal)과 현존감(presence) 및 기억(memory)에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • This study examined if realistic cues of violence - blood color (red), sound cues (screams of pain), and perspective (first-person) - influence user arousal, feeling of presence, and their memory for the game events and positions with personal experience of games. The relationship between arousal and presence was also analyzed with their effects on memory in a 3D modified shooter game (CounterStrike). Results indicated that both realism cues of violence increased the player's arousal regardless of the user's level of game experience, and the arousal had a significant relationship with engagement by affecting presence strongly. Especially, engagement (a sub-factor of presence) was stronger than other variables in explaining the memory effect, and it mediated the effect between arousal and memory. However, the first-person perspective did not show any significant effect on arousal, and had a negative effect on engagement.

Toxicity Assessment of Ocean Dumping Wastes Using Fertilization and Embryo Development Rates in the Sea Urchin (Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus) (말똥성게 (Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus)의 수정 및 배 발생률을 이용한 해양배출 폐기물의 독성평가)

  • Toxicity assessment of ocean dumping wastes (dye waste, urban sewage, food waste) were examined in the fertilization and embryo development rates of the Sea Urchin, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus. Spawning was induced by injecting 1 mL of 0.5 M KCl into coelomic cavity. Males released white or cream-colored sperms and females released yellow or orange-colored eggs. Experiments were began within 30 min the collection of both gametes. The fertilization and embryo development rates test were performed for 10 min and 64 h after fertilization, respectively. The fertilization and embryo development rates in the control condition (not including ocean dumping wastes sludge elutriate) were greater than 90%, but suddenly decreased with increasing of ocean dumping waste sludge elutriate concentrations. The fertilization and normal embryogenesis rates were significantly inhibited in all waste sludge elutriate from dye waste ($EC_{50}$=4.37; $EC_{50}$=1.76), urban sewage ($EC_{50}$=5.79; $EC_{50}$=2.00) and food waste ($EC_{50}$=7.68; $EC_{50}$=2.16), respectively. The NOEC (<3.13) and LOEC (3.13) of fertiliztion and normal embryogenesis rates very similar in all waste sludge elutriate. These results suggest that biological assay using the fertilization and embryo development rates of H. pulcherrimus are very useful test method for the ecological toxicity assessment of ocean dumping wastes.

  • This paper deals with the elderly serious game design which makes full use of the existing arcade game machine. This serious game is on the issue for its positive role recently. Serious arcade game for the elderly which is made up arcade platform-based combined contents manufacture technology has an element which is having a fun for building up physical and mental health. It also has a special objective which can prevent against senile dementia. Above-mentioned serious arcade game which has a special objective in both hardware part and software part is needed to study how to design. Accordingly, this paper presents how to make up special-purpose entertainment machine and contents development by biologic, social, and psychological researches and data about the elderly - main users. We hope that this paper can be used as a base for expansion of new industrial field by integrating new product development for the elderly with high game technology.With the help of information technology

Preparation of ZnO nanorods by hydrothermal method and their $NO_2$ sensing characteristics (수열합성법을 이용한 ZnO 나노로드의 제조 및 이산화질소 감응 특성)

  • ZnO nanorods were prepared by the hydrothermal reaction of a solution containing $Zn(NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$, NaOH, cyclohexylamine, ethanol and water, and their $NO_2$ and CO sensing behaviors were investigated. By the control of water concentration in solution, the morphology and agglomeration of ZnO nanorods could be manipulated, which is associated with the variation of $[OH^-]$ resulted from an interaction between water and cyclohexylamine. Sea-urchin-like and well-dispersed ZnO nanorods were prepared at low and high water content, respectively. Well-dispersed ZnO nanorods showed 1.8 fold change in resistance at 1 ppm $NO_2$ while there was no significant change in resistance at 50 ppm CO. This selective detection of $NO_2$ in the presence of CO can be used in automated car ventilation systems.
