  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of bio-starch from corn processing to replace dried whey in weaned pigs. A total of 120 crossbred [(Landrace×Yorkshire)×Duroc] pigs were weaned at 21 days of age weighing 6.01±0.34 kg in average. Five week feeding trial consisted of phase 1(0~2 wks) and phase 2(3~5 wks). Dietary treatments included 1) CON(basal diet), 2) BS5(whey 5%, partial substitution of bio-starch), 3) BS10(whey 10%, partial substitution of bio-starch) and 4) BS15(whey 15%, partial substitution of bio-starch). There were four dietary treatments with six replicate pens per treatment and five pigs per pen. During the overall period, there were no significant differences in the ADG(average daily gain) and gain/feed ratio among the treatments(P>0.05). However, the ADFI(average daily feed intake) was higher in BS5 and BS15 treatments than in CON treatment(P<0.05). At the 2nd week, dry matter and nitrogen digestibility were increased(quadratic effect, P=0.03 and P=0.01, respectively; cubic effect, P<0.001 and P=0.01, respectively) with the highest at 10% of bio-starch inclusion in the diets. At the last week of the experiment, dry matter, nitrogen and energy digestibility were increased(P<0.05) with the highest at 5% of bio-starch inclusion in the diets. At the 2nd week total protein concentration was increased(linear effect, P=0.04; cubic effect, P=0.01) with the highest at 10% of bio-starch inclusion in the diets. Also, BUN(blood urea nitrogen) was increased(linear effect, P=0.01) as the level of bio-starch inclusion increased in the diets. Fecal consistency score was inclined to lowers CON treatment than other treatments. In conclusion, the result of trial indicates that bio-starch can be included at the level of 5~10% of weaning pig diet replacing part of the dried-whey, and digestibilities were positively affected by bio-starch at growth stage.

  • With the aim of remediating soils contaminated by heavy metals and oil, experimental research was conducted to evaluate the optimal design factors for remediation in terms of efficient soil washing methods and processes. The experiments employed absorptiometric analysis and gas chromatography methods to reduce the concentration of heavy metals such as cooper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn), and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in contaminated soils. The experimental processes consisted of deciding on the washing solution, washing time, and dilution ratio for contaminated soils. A dissolution analysis of heavy metals was then performed by the addition of surfactant, based on the results of the decision experiments, and the injection processes of microbes and hydrogen peroxide were selected. The experimental results revealed that reduction effects in contaminated soils under the experimental conditions were most efficient with hydrochloric acid 0.1 mole, washing time 1 hour, and dilution ratio 1:3, individually. Additional reduction effects for heavy metals and TPH were found with the addition of a washing solution of 1% of surfactant. The addition of microbes and hydrogen peroxide caused a reduction in TPH concentration.

  • In this study, mixed recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) was produced by mixing RCA from waste concrete in order to evaluate a new method of RCA production. Bond strength between reinforcing bars and RCA concrete was qualitatively evaluated as a part of continuous studies to establish design code of reinforced concrete structural members using recycled aggregate. For practical application, specimens were manufactured with the ready mix RCA concrete. Parameters investigated include: concrete compressive strength (i.e 21, 27 and 40 MPa), replacement levels (i.e 0, 30, 60 and 100%), bar position (i.e vertical and horizontal) and bar location (75 and 225 mm). For the pull-out test, each specimen was in the form of a cube, with each side of 150 mm in length and a deformed bar, 16 mm in diameter, was embedded in the center of each specimen. From the test results, the most of HT type specimen with compressive strength of 21 and 27 MPa showed lower bond strength than the ones provided in CEB-FIP and considered in reinforcement location factor ($\alpha\;=\;1.3$). It was reasoned that bonded area of top bar specimen was reduced at the soffit of reinforcement because of bleed water of fresh concrete. Therefore the reinforcement location factor in current KCI design code should be reviewed and modified.

  • A brittle fracture is one of the source of structural damage and can bring a fatal accident. The inner shell of LNG storage tank should be designed and applied to construction by ensure that no brittle crack will occur under -162℃ condition. In point of view of fracture mechanics brittle fracture in the structure could be referred as crack initiation and crack arrest. It should be designed no crack initiation. However, in the unlikely event of a brittle fracture occurring, a back-up function of arresting the brittle crack should be included for the design. In this paper investigated the characteristics of 9% Ni steel thick plates of having a capability of arresting brittle cracks under the thickness of 33 mm, 37mm, 40 mm. First, charpy test has performed to evaluate the fundamental brittle impact fracture property of 9% Ni steel under the temperature of 24℃, -162℃ and -196℃. In addition, Duplex ESSO tests were also performed under -196℃ to evaluate the capability of crack arrest for 9% Ni steel. From the experiments results, it was confirmed that all the thickness of 9% Ni steel plates exhibits sufficient brittle crack arrest fracture toughness for the application of LNG storage tank as a inner shell.

  • A linerless composite propellant tank was designed and manufactured by using the carbon fiber-reinforced composite materials which have superior strength-to-weight ratio in order to reduce weight of the tank. In this research, we designed a sub-scale composite propellant tank with a diameter of 800 mm to withstand an MEOP of 1.7 MPa. We manufactured the boss of the tank by using the same composite materials to reduce the thermal expansion difference between the boss and the secondary-bonded composite layers of the barrel in the cryogenic environment. We used the collapsible mandrel to manufacture the tank without any liner. The mandrel was made from epoxy-based composite tooling prepregs to reduce weight of the mandrel. We manufactured the test tanks by laying up the carbon fiber fabric prepregs manually on the mandrel and then applying the autoclave cure process. We performed a proof test, a helium tightness test, a repeated pressurization test, and a burst test in room temperature. The test results demonstrate that the proposed design and manufacture process satisfies all strength requirements as well as an anti-leakage requirement.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with condensed molasses soluble (CMS), which has economically benefitted as an alternative ingredient of molasses, on growth performance and meat quality in growing-finishing pigs. A total of 160 cross-bred growing pigs (LY×D) having body weight 27.3±1.78 kg, were allotted to 1 of the 4 treatment groups with 4 replications each, in a completely random block design. The experimental diet consisted of a basal diet (CON), with supplementation of molasses 3% (MOL 3.0), CMS 1.5% (CMS 1.5), and CMS 3% (CMS 3.0) to basal diet. Feed and water were provided ad libitum for 70 days. We observed higher feed intake in the MOL 1.5, CMS 1.5, and CMS 3.0 groups than CON group. The final body weight and weight gain were significantly improved in the CMS 3.0 group (p<0.05), as compared to CON group. Evaluation of the meat quality revealed no significant difference in water holding capacity, heating loss, and pH, among all experiment groups. This study indicates that feeding CMS results in improved growth performance in growing-finishing pigs without deterioration in meat quality, and has the potential to be used as an alternative ingredient of molasses in swine feed.
