  • The structural modification to install a heavy sensor was made at the front extremities of the foreign-produced helicopter operated in the Korea Navy Mounting the sensor directly to the nose structure is unlikely to be practical because it lowers a dynamic mode of the airframe close to rotor blade passing frequencies, leading to increased helicopter vibration. Unfortunately we have no information on dynamic characteristics of the imported helicopter. So the experimental modal model derived from shake testing on the overall airframe of a working helicopter was used to solve the sensor Installation problems. The sensitivity analysis was done to evaluate what the best of modification woo)d be. Simple ID model and experimental modal data for mount system with sensor were Incorporated into overall dynamic model to assess the effects of the sensor installation on helicopter. Modal testing for the modified helicopter shows that the airframe modes are sufficiently displaced from rotor passing frequencies. The mount system has been proven fight to be sufficiently stable to meet vibration-level requirement for all required operational profiles.

  • A Through-Bulkhead Initiation Module(TBIM) works as the shock-wave generated by the detonation of donor explosive transmits to acceptor explosive. In order to estimate the minimum thickness of the bulkhead of TBIM, the structural stress of TBIM housing is calculated via modeling analysis, and which shows a sufficient margin in strength as the minimum thickness is bigger than 0.1 mm. The free surface velocity at the metal to explosive interface is measured using VISAR to determine the optimal thickness of bulkhead. The shock pressure is calculated from the measured free surface velocity, and the probability of TBIM with respect to the thickness of bulkhead is estimated by comparing the sensitivity of acceptor explosive with it.

  • This study investigates the structural safety of typical greenhouse to be utilized for developing plant factory. New long-span greenhouse systems were presented according to the results of structural analyses performed by finite-element program, ABAQUS. Reasonable values of design loads such as wind and snow loads in the Greenhouse Design Specifications (1995) were applied to check the new greenhouse systems. It was concluded that the new greenhouse systems were consistently safe enough to resist to both wind load and snow load. The new greenhouse system can be used to make simple and economic plant factory.

  • Eco-friendly and renewable energy sources are actively being researched in recent times, and of shore wind power generation requires advanced design technologies in terms of increasing the capacities of wind turbines and enlarging wind turbine installation vessels (WTIVs). The WTIV ensures that the hull is situated at a height that is not affected by waves. The most important part of the WTIV is the leg structure, which must respond dynamically according to the wave, current, and wind loads. In particular, the wave load is composed of irregular waves, and it is important to know the exact dynamic response. The dynamic response analysis uses a single degree of freedom (SDOF) method, which is a simplified approach, but it is limited owing to the consideration of random waves. Therefore, in industrial practice, the time-domain analysis of random waves is based on the multi degree of freedom (MDOF) method. Although the MDOF method provides high-precision results, its data convergence is sensitive and difficult to apply owing to design complexity. Therefore, a dynamic amplification factor (DAF) estimation formula is developed in this study to express the dynamic response characteristics of random waves through time-domain analysis based on different variables. It is confirmed that the calculation time can be shortened and accuracy enhanced compared to existing MDOF methods. The developed formula will be used in the initial design of WTIVs and similar structures.

  • The duplex burnable poison absorbers concept was suggested by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. This BP rod is composed of inner region of natural U-Gd$_2$O$_3$ and outer shell of enriched UO$_2$-Er$_2$O$_3$. It is expected that this burnable absorber has same reactivity control capability with gadolinia burnable absorber used in extened fuel cycle. In order to evaluate the nuclear feasibility of duplex BPs, the nuclear design characteristics were compared with that of four types of burnable absorbers; gadolinia, erbia, IFBA, dysprosia duplex BP on 24 months fuel cycle for Korean Standard Nuclear Power plants. According to the evaluation results of nuclear characteristics, the duplex BPs were better than other BPs on k-infinitives, reactivity holddown worth (RHW), pin power peaking and moderator temperature coefficient (MTC). The possibility of nuclear core design was also confirmed based on the optimized fuel assemblies which were searched for a sensitivity analysis. Characteristics of core design with duplex BPs was compared with that of reference core with gadolinia BPs for cycle length, power peaking and MTC. The duplex BP core had a little longer cycle length by 4 to 7 days because of increased amount of fissile in enriched uranium at the outer shell of duplex BP In case of power peaking F$\_$Q/ of duplex BP core was reduced from 1.5773 to 1.5335. MTC was also less -0.48 pcm/C than that of reference core. Finally, evaluation of fuel cycle economy was performed for the manufacturing feasibility test and fuel cost evaluation with duplex BPs. Fuel cycle economy of duplex BP core almost was equivalent with that of gadolinia BP core.

  • As a part of Load and Resistance Factor Design(LRFD) code development in Korea, in this paper an intensive reliability analysis was performed to evaluate reliability levels of the two static bearing capacity methods for driven steel pipe piles adopted in Korean Standards for Structure Foundations by the representative reliability methods of First Order Reliability Method(FORM) and Monte Carlo Simulation(MCS). The resistance bias factors for the two static design methods were evaluated by comparing the representative measured bearing capacities with the design values. In determination of the representative bearing capacities of driven steel pipe piles, the 58 data sets of static load tests and soil property tests were collected and analyzed. The static bearing capacity formula and the Meyerhof method using N values were applied to the calculation of the expected design bearing capacity of the piles. The two representative reliability methods(FORM, MCS) based computer programs were developed to facilitate the reliability analysis in this study. Mean Value First Order Second Moment(MVFOSM) approach that provides a simple closed-form solution and two advanced methods of FORM and MCS were used to conduct the intensive reliability analysis using the resistance bias factor statistics obtained, and the results were then compared. In addition, a parametric study was conducted to identify the sensibility and the influence of the random variables on the reliability analysis under consideration.

  • Using a level set method and topological derivatives, a topological shape optimization method that is independent of an initial design is developed for linearly elastic structures. In the level set method, the initial domain is kept fixed and its boundary is represented by an implicit moving boundary embedded in the level set function, which facilitates to handle complicated topological shape changes. The "Hamilton-Jacobi(H-J)" equation and computationally robust numerical technique of "up-wind scheme" lead the initial implicit boundary to an optimal one according to the normal velocity field while minimizing the objective function of compliance and satisfying the constraint of allowable volume. Based on the asymptotic regularization concept, the topological derivative is considered as the limit of shape derivative as the radius of hole approaches to zero. The required velocity field to update the H-J equation is determined from the descent direction of Lagrangian derived from optimality conditions. It turns out that the initial holes are not required to get the optimal result since the developed method can create holes whenever and wherever necessary using indicators obtained from the topological derivatives. It is demonstrated that the proper choice of control parameters for nucleation is crucial for efficient optimization process.

  • Aqueous mineral carbonation process, in which $CO_2$ is captured through the reaction with aqueous calcium oxide (CaO) solution, is one of CCU technology enabling the stable sequestration of $CO_2$ as well as economic value creation from its products. In order to enhance the carbon capture efficiency, it is required to maximize the dissolution rate of solid reactants, CaO. For this purpose, the proper design of a reactor, which can achieve the uniform distribution of solid reactants throughout the whole reactor, is essential. In this paper, the effect of internal reactor designs on the solid dispersion quality is studied by using CFD (computational fluid dynamics) techniques for the pilot-scale reactor which can handle 40 ton of $CO_2$ per day. Various combination cases consisting of different internal design variables, such as types, numbers, diameters, clearances and speed of impellers and length and width of baffles are analyzed for the stirred tank reactor with a fixed tank geometry. By conducting sensitivity analysis, we could distinguish critical variables and their impacts on solid distribution. At the same time, the reactor design which can produce solid distribution profile with a standard deviation value of 0.001 is proposed.

  • In this paper, the inductive power collector using electromagnetic induction for vehicle such as the PRT(Personal Rapid Transit) system is suggested and son ideas for power collector design to improve tile power transfer performance are presented. And also, the analysis of the inductive power transfer system in conjunction with series resonant converter operating variable high frequency is shown. Of particular interest is the sensitivity of the complete system to variations in operational frequency and parameters. In inductive power transfer system electrical power is transferred from a primary winding in the form of a coil or tract to one or more isolated pick-up coils that my relative to the primary. The ability to transmit power without contact enables high reliability and easy maintenance that allows inductive power transfer system to be implemented in hostile environments. This technology has found application in many fields such as electric vehicles, PRT(Personal Rapid Transit) etc. But, low output power is generated due to a loosely coupled characteristic of the large air-gap. Therefore, we will show you various characteristic of inductive power transfer system as double layer construction of secondary winding, which was divided in half to increase both output current and output voltage, a model of power collector and parallel winding structure, a model of concentration/ decentralization winding and the effects of parameter and operational frequency variation.
