  • The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis method by using the finite element method which can exactly analyze load-deflection relationships, crack propagations. and stresses and strains of reinforcements, tendons, and concrete in behaviors of elastic. inelastic and ultimate ranges of reinforced and prestressed concrete slabs under monotonically increasing loads. For t h i s purpose, the m a t e r i a l and geometric nonlinearities are taken into account in this study. The total Lagrangian formulation based upon the simplified Von Karman strain expressions is used to take into account the geometric nonlinearities of the structure. The material nonlinearities are taken into account by comprising the tension, compression. and shear models of cracked concrete and models for reinforcements and tendons in the concrete : and also a so-called smeared crack model is incorporated. The reinforcements and t,endons are assumed to be in a uniaxial stress state and are modelled as smeared layers of equivalent thickness. For the verification of application and validity of the method proposed in this paper, several numerical examples are analyzcd and compared with experimental results. As a result, this method can successfully predict the nonlinear and inelastic behaviors throughout the fracture of reinforced and prestressed concrete slabs.

  • Sand pile method, such as sand drain method and sand compaction pile method, has been popularly used as an improved method for soft clay grounds. The effect of accelerating consolidation of soft clay grounds has been evaluated with Barren's solution. The consolidation behavior of soft clay ground with sand piles strongly depends on both the nonlinear mechanical interaction between sand piles and surrounding clays and the degradation permeability of clays. In this paper a method of determining consolidation parameters of soft clay ground with sand drains by using Barren's solution was proposed through a series of numerical simulations. Through the method, the change in both volume compressibility and permeability during consolidation was reasonably evaluated.

  • A linear thermoviscoelastic material model, whose basis is on incremental constitutive equation that takes complete strain and temperature histories into account, is derived and computerized in the finite element code. The thermoviscoelastic F.E.M. code which is intended primarily to analyze the cylinder model during the cool-down period, embodies the assumption of linearly elastic bulk and visco-elastic shear responses, thermo-rheologically simple response to temperature change and isotropic thermal expansion. The verification of computer program is accomplished by first testing it against a closed form solution of A.M. Freudenthal & M. Shinozuka's. The stress and strain analyses of five cylindrical models are presented and compared with experimental results. Analytical results are good agreement with experimental results. Margins of safety are evaluated and its allowable ranges are presented.

  • Developed is a nonlinear fracture theory which can model the complex fracture behavior of concrete. This theory is based on the nonlinear behavior due to progressive microcracking and strain-softening in the fracture process zone of concrete cracks. The simplified realistic fracture model which preserves the same fracture energy for the different fracture process zone widths is also derived. By modeling fracture through stress-strain behavior, the effect of compressive stresses parallel to the crack plane can be easily taken into account. The comparisons of the present theory with valuable fracture test data available in the literature show good agreements, and the existing linear theory exhibits in many cases large deviations from the actual test results. A simple approximate formula for the fracture energy of concrete which should, be necessary for the fracture analysis of concrete structures is derived. Finally, the application of fracture theory to reinforced concrete and the necessity of further research are discussed.

  • Ocean wave energy harvesting is still too expensive despite developing a variety of wave energy converter (WEC) devices. For the cost-effective wave energy harvesting, it can be an effective measure to use existing breakwaters or newly installed breakwaters for both wave control and energy harvesting purposes. In this study, we investigated the functionality of both breakwater and wave-power generator for the oscillating water column (OWC)-type wave energy converter (WEC) installed in a pneumatic floating breakwater, which was originally developed as a floating breakwater. In order to verify the performance of the breakwater as a WEC, the air flow velocity from air-chamber to WEC has to be evaluated properly. Therefore, air flow velocity, wave transformation and motion of floating structure was numerically implemented based on BEM from linear velocity potential theory without considering the compressibility of air within the chamber. Air pressure, meanwhile, was assumed to be fluctuated by the motions of structure and the water level change within air-chamber. The validity of the obtained values can be determined by comparing the previous results from the numerical analysis for different shapes. Based on numerical model results, wave transformation characteristics around OWC system mounted on the fixed and floating breakwaters, and motions of the structure with air flow velocities are investigated. In summary, all numerical results are almost identical to the previous research considering air compressibility. Therefore, it can be concluded that this analysis not considering air compressibility in the air chamber is more efficient and practical method.

  • It's essential process to study non-linear material function related to characteristics of compressibility and permeability when we predict the consolidation behavior of soft clay ground. In this study, laboratory tests were conducted to find out the material function using marine clay. Standard oedometer test and Rowe cell test were performed with conditions, which were classified into vertical drainage only, radial drainage only and vertical-radial drainage case. Modified oedometer test equipment was developed to find out the material function and special extrusion device was originated to minimize the sample disturbance effect. Reliability of the results in modified oedometer test could be confirmed by comparing with the Rowe cell's one. Effective stress - void ratio - permeability relations were analyzed using all testing results. As a result, void ratio with effective stress level could be expressed by the power function and permeability with void ratio could be expressed by exponential function. In soft clay with high initial water content and low shear strength, non-linear characteristics related to compressibility and permeability varied with wide range by the effective stress levels. It's important to note that non-linearity of the material function should be considered at prediction of the consolidation behavior.

  • This paper presents a hypoplastic model for three-dimensional analysis of concrete structures under monotonic, cyclic, proportional and non-proportional loading. The constitutive model is based on the concept of equivalent uniaxial strains that allows the assumed orthotropic model to be described via three equivalent uniaxial stress-strain curves. The characteristics of these curves are obtained from the ultimate strength surface in the principal stress space based on the Willam-Warnke curve. A cap model is added to consider loading along or near the hydrostatic axis. The equivalent uniaxial curve is based on the Popovics and Saenz models. The post-peak behavior is adjusted to account for the effects of confinement and to describe the change in response from brittle to ductile as the lateral confinement increases. Correlation studies with available experimental tests are presented to demonstrate the model performance. Tests with monotonic loading on specimens under constant lateral confinement are considered first, followed by biaxial and triaxial tests with cyclic loads. The triaxial test example considers non-proportional loading.

  • This paper concentrates on the nonlinear analysis of the reinforced concrete flexural members under cyclic loading. To develop a nonlinear material model, concrete is treated as an orthotropic nonlinear material and steel is modeled as an elasto-plastic material. The models for hysteresis behavior with stiffness degradation in compression and for crack opening and closing in tension are included. The finite element computer program for the nonlinear analysis of RC flexural members under cyclic loading is developed. The accuracy and reliabihty of the numerical procedure IS demonstrated by the FEM analysis and test results of underreinforced concrete beams.

  • Five concrete-encased steel columns using high-strength steel($f_{ys}$=801MPa) and high-strength concrete($f_{ck}$=97.7MPa) were tested to investigate the eccentric axial load-displacement relationship. Test parameters included the type, yield strength, and spacing of lateral reinforcement, and also the eccentricity of axial load. To analyze the behavior of the column specimens, the nonlinear sectional analysis using strain-compatibility and confinement effect was performed. To examine the applicability of existing design codes for the composite sections using high-strength materials, the test results were also compared with the predictions by the nonlinear analysis and the design codes. The confinement effect of lateral reinforcement increased the ductility of concrete, and the moment capacity of the column specimens increased with the ductility of concrete. The prediction by the nonlinear analysis gave good agreement with the test results. On the other hand, the ACI 318 neglecting lateral confinement effect underestimated the strength of the column specimens, and the Eurocode 4 using complete plastic capacity of steel section overestimated.
