  • The paper describes the adaptation of evolutionary fuzzy model ins (EFM) in developing global function approximation tools for use in genetic algorithm based optimization of nonlinear structural systems. EFM is an optimization process to determine the fuzzy membership parameters for constructing global approximation model in a case where the training data are not sufficiently provided or uncertain information is included in design process. The paper presents the performance of EFM in terms of numbers of fuzzy rules and training data, and then explores the EFM based sizing of automotive component for passenger protection.

  • Beam - and arch-like structures are two-dimensional bodies characterized by the fact of small thickness compared to the length of structures. Owing to this geometric feature, linear displacement approximations through the thickness such as Kirchhoff and Reissner-Mindlin theories which are more accessible one dimensional problems have been used. However, for accurate analysis of the behavior in the regions where the state of stresses is complex, two-dimensional linear elasicity or relatively high order of thickness polynomials is required. This paper analyses accuracy according to the order of thickness polynomials and introduces a technique for model combination for which several different polynomial orders are mixed in a single structure.

  • Many structural optimization problems are solved by numerical algorithms since these are complicated and nonlinear. To provide a wider base and popular it to structual design optimization, reliable, accurate and superlinearly convergent nonlinear programming algorithm with active-set strategy have been developed. One of these is RQP(recursive quadratic programming method). This algorithm has several parameters and its performance is influenced by variations of these key parameters. Therefore, an RQP algorithm is selected to enhance its numerical performances by choosing proper parameters. The paper persents these influences on its numerical performance. For comparison of performances, a structural design software for minimum weight of truss subjected to displacement, stress, and lower and upper bounds on design variables is also implemented.

  • This paper presents a boundary element method for obtaining approximate solutions of 2-dimensional consolidation problems based on the Biot's linear theory. Laplace transform is applied to differential equation system in order to eliminate the time dependency. The boundary integral equations in transformed space are formulated and the fundamental solutions are shown in a closed form. In order to convert the transformed solutions to the ones in real space, the Hosono's numerical Laplace transform inversion method is applied. As a numerical example, a half-space consolidation problem subjected to a strip local load is selected and the applicability of the method is demonstrated through the comparison with the exact solutions.

  • A generalized linear mixed model is an extension of a generalized linear model that allows random effect as well as provides flexibility in developing a suitable model when observations are correlated or when there are other underlying phenomena that contribute to resulting variability. We describe maximum likelihood estimation methods for logistic regression models that include random effects - the Laplace approximation, Gauss-Hermite quadrature, adaptive Gauss-Hermite quadrature, and pseudo-likelihood. Applications are provided with social science problems by analyzing the effect of mental health and life satisfaction on volunteer activities from Korean welfare panel data; in addition, we observe that the inclusion of random effects in the model leads to improved analyses with more reasonable inferences.

  • When a structure is built on the consolidation ground, the instant elastic deflection occures according to the characteristics of the ground and the load on it. And the corresponding contact pressure is established. But, as time passes, the secondary consolidating deflection is added to the instant elastic deflection, the upper structure, due to its flexural rigidity, resist to the additional curvature. So the variation of the contact pressure occurs. And this new contact pressure exerts influence on the consolidation form again. The new consolidation form exerts influence on the contact pressure in return. This kind of interaction continues till all the consolidation of the ground is finished. So the consolidation problem can not be definded as the linear problem. This paper intends to scheme an approximate iteration method to analyse this non-linear interaction problem between the upper structure and the lower consolidation ground which supports the former.

  • This paper proposes a design technique of a survivable ship backbone network, which describes a near optimal configuration scheme of physical and logical topologies of which the survivable ship backbone network consists. We first analyze and present an efficient architecture of a survivable ship backbone network consisting of redundant links and ship devices with dual communication interfaces. Then, we present an integer linear programming-based configuration scheme of a physical topology with regard to the proposed ship backbone network architecture. Finally, we present a metaheuristic-based configuration scheme of a logical topology, underlying the physical topology.

  • In this study, an improved energy-based nonlinear static analysis method are proposed to be used for more accurate evaluation of progressive collapse potential of steel moment frames by reflecting the contribution of a double-span floor slab. To this end, the behavior of the double-span floor slab was first investigated by performing material and geometric nonlinear finite element analysis. A simplified energy-absorbed analytical model by idealizing the deformed shape of the double-span floor slab was developed. It is shown that the proposed model can easily be utilized for modeling the axial tensile force and strain energy response of the double-span floor slab under the column-removal scenario.

  • Two nonlinear frame elements taking into account geometric nonlinearity is presented and compared based on the Lagrangian co-rotational formulation. The first frame element is believed to be geometrically-exact because not only tangent stiffness matrices is exactly evaluated including stiffness matrices due to initial deformation but also total member forces are directly determined from total deformations in the deformed state. Particularly two exact tangent stiffness matrices based on total Lagrangian and updated Lagrangian formulation, respectively, are verified to be identical. In the second frame element, the deformed curved shape is regarded as the polygon and current flexural deformations in iteration process are neglected in evaluating tangent stiffness matrices and total member forces. Two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy and the good performance of the first frame element compared with the second element. Furthermore it is shown that the first frame element can be used in tracing nonlinear behaviors of cable members.
