In this paper, the mechanics of ships in grounding with a forward speed is analyzed. A raking damage estimate model in grounding of ships is proposed. The accuracy and applicability of the model are verified by a comparison of experimental results. The progressive collapse analysis of damaged gull sections under vertical bending moments is described by using the ALPS/ISUM computer code. The procedure is applied to grounding simulation of a double hull tanker with a transverseless system.

This study aimed to predict the resistance and propulsion performance of a ship using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a database as well as establish an assessment method for the energy efficiency design index (EEDI) using the results. First, the total resistance of the studied ship is obtained using CFD. A flow analysis is conducted with the free surface and trim and sinkage using a commercial CFD code (STAR-CCM+). The effective power of the ship is assessed based on the CFD results. The quasi-propulsive efficiency is calculated from an empirical prediction equation using experimental data and similar material. Finally, a general calculation program for the EEDI is established based on the hydrodynamic results, ship information for principal particulars, conversion factor of $CO_2$ for fuels, and fuel consumption.

Recently, people's interest in marine leisure has been increasing, and research and development on leisure boats are actively being carried out to pioneer overseas markets. These days, the materials used for leisure boats are fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) and aluminum alloy. However, FRP is hygroscopic and causes environmental problems, and aluminum alloy has high thermal conductivity and fire susceptibility. Therefore, titanium alloy is being adopted as a material for leisure boats instead. In this study, hull thicknesses and design pressures were calculated while considering dynamic effects for titanium boats. Four sets of rules and regulations were used: ISO 12215-5, RINA Pleasure Yacht, LR Special Service Craft, and KR High-speed Light Craft. The maximum bottom slamming loads were in the order of ISO, KR, LR, and RINA, and the required hull thicknesses were in the same order. This research might be helpful for understanding the rules, regulations, and overseas export of leisure boats.

This research aims to investigate the superstructure characteristics of the CFRP-yachts whose hulls are made of the light-weight material CFRP. CFRP-yachts, which belong to light-weight yachts, have a tendency of having very small superstructures compared to other vessels of the same length, and such a tendency is closely related to stability. In this research, a comparison of shape characteristics was made between common composite-plastic yachts and CFRP-yachts to find out the shape characteristics of CFRP-yacht. In the meantime, a case study was conducted concerning shape changes in superstructure to understand the effect of such changes on stability. For this purpose the shapes of a total of 10 GFRP-yachts and CFRP-yachts were comparatively analyzed, and the result showed the tendency of their hulls and superstructures. Whereas the case study on stability assessment involved various superstructure shapes of CFRP yachts, for assessment by superstructure size. Stability assessment was according to ISO 12217 (Small craft Stability and buoyancy assessment and categorization). A program was also developed based on stability assessment process due to rolling in beam waves and wind, and it was applied to the case study. The result of the case study showed that the windage area distribution tendency of the yachts whose hulls were made of the light-weight material CFRP was similar to that of the GFRP-yachts, but that the superstructure shapes of the CFRP-yachts were about 50% smaller than those of the GFRP-yachts. In addition, the stability assessment involving various superstructure areas of the CFRP-yachts showed that problems with stability occurred when their superstructure sizes were similar to, or larger by about 10% than, those of the GFRP-yachts.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued international standards for ship maneuverability and stability. These have been established to improve marine safety and influence the direction of research. The previous literature has been researched, but there are few studies on the relationship between ship maneuverability and stability. This study carried out a fundamental experiment to quantitatively evaluate that relationship. Radius of turn and maximum heel angle depending on changing were analyzed through a turning test using a free running model ship. The test results show the change tendency of decreasing turn radius and increasng maximum heel angle according to a GM decrease. A rough estimate equation is proposed to predict the change tendency on radius of turn and angle of maximum heel as GM decreases. Many ships can suddenly experience reduced GM due to unexpected reasons during sailing. The results in this study can be used as fundamental data to estimate a ship's tactical turn diameter and variable heel angle for steering as GM decreases.

In the field of research of sea keeping quality, much development has been made in recent years using the method of calculation based on the strip theory. It is very important to investigate the hull response of a fishing vessel in waves to ensure the safe navigation and fishing operation in rough seas by preserving excellent sea keeping qualities. For this purpose, the author measured various responses of three fishing vessels in waves using real sea experimental measuring system and analyzed the experimental data The results obtained can be summarized as follow. 1. The amplitudes of pitching motion in the experiments appeared low values with more than one peak occasionally in following sea and quartering sea, and the band width of those was found to be wide relatively. 2. The amplitudes of rolling motion in the experiments appeared high values with only one peak in following sea and quartering sea regardless of ship's tonnage, and the band width of those was found to be narrow relatively. 3. The comparisions of theoretical results with those of experiments for the pitching motions and rolling motion in following sea and quartering sea show that the theoretical values are higher slightly than those of experiments in both directions and the period at which the peak appears in the calculations and the experiments has good agreement approximately 4. The calculated responses of two vessels under a assumed wave of 2.2m height and 5.0sec period showed that the response of pitching motion of ship-A are 2.2 times bigger than those of ship-C in following sea and quartering sea, and the response of rolling motion of ship-A is 4.2 times bigger than that of ship-C in quartering sea.
When a ship operates in a shallow water and channel, the hull sinkage and asymmetrical force generated around the ship by the influence of sea bottom and bank walls are caused collision with sea bottom, other ships or the bank itself. Especially, the shipping company and pilots navigating the area of Europe and North America with many channels are deal with it as a important matter to prevent collision. In this paper, hydrodynamic force generated between the ship and bank using the numerical analysis for the safe navigation of ship, that is, sway force and yaw moment should be presumed qualitatively. It makes a program for fluid analysis of the shallow water and bank effect. Analyses are carried out for three kind of parameter, that is, ship's speed, water depth and ship-bank distance for crude oil carriers. The numerical analysis results are compared with results of the experiments and the previous published papers.

In order to evaluate properly ship motion relating to the berthing maneuver, the hydrodynamic forces acting on ship hull in berthing maneuver need to be estimated rightly. CFD has been employed for time-domain simulation of transient flow induced by Wigley model moving laterally from rest in shallow water. The numerical solutions successfully captured not only the characteristics of the transitional hydrodynamic forces but also some interesting features of the flow field around a berthing ship according to the water depth. In this paper, the consideration is carried out on the approximate formula based on the CFD results, which can estimate hydrodynamic forces especially lateral drag coefficient starting from the rest to the uniform movement.

Recently, interest in smart port systems for linking with autonomous ships is increasing. To build a smart port system, primarily, a system that can automatically moor a vessel is required. To calculate the allowable mooring capacity of the automatic mooring system in a port, the characteristics of the vessel must be considered, and the external force generated from environmental disturbances in the sea must be accurately calculated. Accurately estimating the magnitude of these environmental disturbances is an extremely important factor for designing an automatic mooring system. In this study, the mooring capacity of the HANBADA was estimated according to the port and fishing port design criteria of the Ministry of Ocean and Fisheries. The longitudinal and lateral forces of the mooring force acting on the HANBADA were 18 kN and 248 kN, respectively, under the most extreme ocean conditions (BF 6).

Sunken ships cause damage to the environment due to the dispersal of fuel oil and harmful cargo goods in the hull. Since the sunken ship is mostly flooded by the seabed, it tends to be in a relatively stable condition. However, the heavy body, together with the load of remaining goods in the cargo hold, the constant contact with the seabed, and ocean currents and tidal waves, can affect dispersal of residual fuel oils out of the sunken ship. Corrosion of the sunken ship starts upon sinking, decreasing the thickness of the hull structure and sub-materials. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the structural stability against the potential breakdown of the sunken ship. Whilst evaluating the danger of the sunken ship, this result should be reflected in 'the possible discharge'. This study was undertaken to suggest a procedure for a step by step evaluation to assess the structural stability a sunken ship. The structural stability assessment to estimate the collapsibility of the hull was structure targeted at the sunken ship 'No. 7 HaeSung', which was classified as the prime example for the intensive management of sunken ships. This study was undertaken to suggest a procedure for a step by step evaluation to assess the structural stability a sunken ship and to propose a method to conduct a structural safety assessment that estimates the collapsibility of the hull by targeting the sunken ship 'No. 7 HaeSung',which was classified as the prime example for the intensive management of sunken ships. The collapsibility of the hull structure was estimated Based on the damage size of the hull structure, and the corrosion rate of the hull structure and sub-materials due to the seawater after sinking. It was confirmed that there was a low possibility of the total destruction of the hull structure at the current time. However, there is a high possibility in the potential failure of the hull structure due to increased rate of corrosion thereafter. Therefore, we believe continuous study on influence of corrosion and marine environment change to sunken ship's structural safety is necessary.
